Out here though?
‘Not anymore.’ I thought as I ran a hand over my face before Bunny patted my shoulder.
I tilted my head. “You know it's okay to over-analyze at times, right?” She said with a chuckle.
My eyes narrowed. “First time anyone said that to me without calling me a coward or worrywart.” I snorted.
“Tch, perhaps they’d call you smart in this situation.” She laughed.
“But...my point is this dearie; I say you should be with this friend of yours. Enjoy life with one another, friends are a treasure and should forever be kept so long as life allows it.” I nodded my head.
“However, as soon as your gut gives you the slightest hint that something ain’t right? You listen quickly and well. Life will only give you one chance to listen to its hints and warnings, don’t let life’s warnings be in vain dearie.” Bunny continued before a playful glare flickered in her eyes.
“If you don’t? I’ll force you to clean my entire house for being an idiot.”
I scoffed. “I’ll listen,” I said.
“Good!” Bunny grinned before she suddenly slapped my shoulder, causing me to yelp a little as she stood up.
“Now, enough of the sappy crap. You let that tiny bird eat all your pie!” I quickly turned my head, the sight of a puffier Fidel making my eyes widen.
“Glutton!” I hissed, the soft peck on my cheek making me roll my eyes as I looked him over.
“You want another pie to take back home with you? I’ll even pack up some lemon-flavored muffins for you if you want!”
“Do whatever you want,” I said back to her.
Whip cream and crumbs covered him head to toe...eating an entire pie filled to the brim with sugar? I didn’t know whether to be surprised or worried! He’d sure as hell have a stomachache! His slower than usual nature was already telling me he was experiencing a crash but...with some dieting and such? Making sure he ate nothing but berries and insects alongside hunting on his own after a week of rest? He should've been fine.
As I continued to stay over the old woman's house, however, our conversations mostly consisting of old shows she used to watch as a kid while we poked fun at the stupid jokes made on TV from time to time, after taking a look out the window, only to see that the skies were beginning to turn a light orange color while the tiny sparkles of stars began to dot the sky here and there. It didn't take long for me to grab the pre-pared snacks before I bid a farewell to Bunny.
“Be careful down the road, will you? I ain’t makin’ another batch of food if you drop it!” She called after me as I made sure to check if Fidel was safely tucked away into my pocket before I scoffed.
“I’m not clumsy!” I called back to her before I continued on walking off.
A darkening sky that was devoid of any clouds while stars slowly but surely began to pop out one by one, usually, I would’ve taken a moment or two to admire the sight above me. It wasn’t too much of a secret but I enjoyed the earlier sights before night fully took over, in the countryside? To me at least, it seemed that the colors were much more brilliant and filled with life...the birds flew here and there, trying to find shelter to rest for the night and all the daytime animals were beginning to tuck themselves away to wherever they could to sleep!
But...as I looked to the left of me?
Whether it was a spark of paranoia or my ears really catching onto something in the distance...I could’ve sworn I heard the sounds of music playing while people started to laugh and jeer.
Like they were about to celebrate one huge party...to be completely truthful? I didn’t even think a cult had enough heart left to celebrate parties and what-not, especially when their main source of fun consisted of eating people.
However, who was going to go into the forest and tell them that?
Not me, that was for damn sure.
“Dads! I’m home!” I shouted as soon as I spotted my house beginning to pop up in the distance.
Yet, my brow immediately cocked as soon as I noticed there wasn’t a car waiting in the driveway.
My heart began to pick up its pace ever so slightly, the cult had begun its jeering and cheering...did something happen to them?
‘Let me be paranoid please...’ I thought to myself with a gulp as soon as I started to pick up my fast walk into a jog and then into a run. Upon entering the house, I quickly set down the spear next to the door before I started to look around.
It smelled faintly of cologne...pinecones in which Dad wore and ocean salt that Father was fond of wearing.
I began to chew my bottom lip in nervousness, the sight of a paper on the table slowly but surely made my heart slow down with reassurance.
“You weren’t here but me and your Father are getting pizza, please wait for us.” I read aloud, a tired chuckle escaping me at the note.
They shouldn’t have scared me like that, the least they could've done was wait for me to get home and then have us all go to get pizza together! It wasn’t like I wanted to stick around home alone during the night after all...especially when the cult was known to move around during the night.
“You’re seriously an idiot for eating all that pie, Fidel,” I grumbled as soon as I took the bird out of my pocket, the sight of vomit in my pocket making me feel more worried than disgusted as I walked back over to the kitchen.
Giving him cool water and making sure he was neither too hot nor too cold as I set him beside a slightly open window, I didn’t know how to heal a bird and it wasn’t like there were any vets near the area!
But, fortunately, or unfortunately, this wasn’t the first time the bird had gotten sick and time after time again, I had to be there to help him feel better.
More than anyone, I knew that I could get him to feel better, with the aid of looking up some things on the internet, resting, and making sure he wasn’t fed any sort of human food and only bird-healthy foods from now on.
“Storm Empress...help that bird heal, will you?” I mumbled to myself as soon as I was finished changing out of my clothes, causing me to smoothen out my black tank-top and white pants with red socks before I grabbed my guitar.
Rock music? Country music? Maybe something a little more pop-ish? Country music seemed like the better idea in this sort of situation as I didn’t wish to make too much noise for the bird, a small strum here and there, a few hums and words spoken and yet...unsurprisingly maybe, I couldn’t find the inspiration to play. I didn’t mind being home alone, in fact, I felt that it was exciting at times!
Being home alone meant that I could do whatever I wanted and eat whatever I wanted without being scolded, however, being home alone at night? It was the norm for it to unnerve me a little but for tonight? It made me feel as if I had a million spiders running around on my back while my body froze every now and again.
Home was safe, the saying was true for most people out there but for tonight?
Home meant vulnerability, there were only two houses on this street.
The cult wouldn’t be interested in an old woman, some would probably dare to pass by and say hello! But my house?
A place where people were younger and had food and any other supplies they may have needed?
I was equally prepared and unprepared to try and defend my home-
“Chelidon!” A voice suddenly called from the window, causing me to jump as I scrambled to keep my guitar from dropping on the floor.
“The hell?! Dilion!?” I hissed; my eyes wide with fright as he simply smiled at me with a small snort.
“You didn’t come to the fields.”
