I cocked a brow. “Who would? The cult is louder than usual. They must be having some type of celebration.”
“Yeah! And celebration means distraction, they won’t notice us so long as we stay hidden in the golden fields!” Dilion grinned.
“I don’t-”
“C’mon...you said you wouldn’t get cold feet,” Dilion whined, his voice a tad bit clearer as soon as I went over to open the window a bit.
I couldn’t help but roll my eyes and sigh, truly...he reminded me of an old brunette friend, she and he had the same amount of adventurousness!
For a minute?
I could’ve sworn that the two were long-distance siblings or cousins! But for now? I had to consider my options as well as Bunny’s earlier words...at the moment? I didn’t feel any sort of bad feeling that alluded to possible future events, much less did I feel any ill will radiating from Dilion.
However, the sound of the cult cheering in the distance continued to unnerve me.
I shook my head with a huff. “Do you at least promise to let me go home if that cult's cheering getscloser?” I asked, Dilion immediately nodding his head with a scoff.
“Why wouldn’t I? I wouldn’t want those cult members to get sick by eating someone so flavorless.” Dilion said, giving me a light friendly punch in the arm before I scoffed.
“Meet me out in the fields?”
“Yes, yes, just let me get ready,” I responded, causing him to nod his head before he turned to walk off.
Tonight was the night, the night where I would finally take a chance to explore outside of the house a little! Though I could admit I was more nervous than ever, especially due to the fact that the cult was cheering loudly tonight, four eyes were always better than two.
Not to mention, I'd bring a weapon to protect myself just in case something actually did come up.
“I’ll be right back Fidel,” I whispered as I threw on a black sweater.
“Just wait and get better.” I continued, giving the bird a quick kiss on the head with a small peep following suit before I grabbed the spear on my way out the door.
I took a single breath.
A breath of daring, adventure, and...strangely enough?
Freedom.
My heart nearly thumped right out of my chest each time I took a step further and further away from my house!
As I continued to walk although, my feet eventually led me to walk through a large section of tall grass, across a dirt road before I eventually reached the fields. I could do nothing but stare and gasp in wonder as soon as I took a quick second to look up at the skies. Who would’ve thought...that the skies were this pretty out here? There were so many stars that I couldn’t even begin to count them! The sky wasn’t a boring black like it was in the city but was an enchanting mixture of colors that ranged from light lavenders, deep royal purples, blues, and even some golden oranges. Comets, big and small shot across the sky and the moon wasn’t as big as the empty sky made it out to be.
So small...almost like a dot in a way. A dot that only added to the beauty of the galaxy.
“I see you’re enjoying your time away from home so far.” I heard Dilion laugh before I tore my eyes away from the sky.
I grinned. “I will say that I should’ve snuck out of the house earlier,” I said, the sound of a distant shrill-sounding tweet immediately making me turn my head back towards my house.
“Fidel-”
“Chelidon!” Dillion immediately said as he walked in front of me with a smile.
“I saw a group of fireflies not too far from here! You coming with?”
“Yeah...but I have to check up on Fidel, he’s sick you see-”
“Oh please, he’s a wild animal, he knows how to survive, doesn’t he? If you keep coddling him, especially when it comes to danger, he’ll really start to be dependent on you.” Dilion chuckled as he crossed his arms.
I raised a brow at him, my eyes constantly looking back at him and back at home.
That was true but he was still sick, he needed my help in order to make sure he was hydrated and nothing happened to him!
I mean...I left the window open after all!
What if a cat came by and preyed on his vulnerability?
A fox?
A dog?
Anything could’ve happened to him-
“Hey,” Dillion said, interrupting my thoughts before he placed a hand on my shoulder.
He gave me a reassuring smile. “He’s fine, I swear it to you. If we make this quick, only going to see the fireflies then I swear on my name. I’ll take you back home myself.” He said.
Fidel was a feisty swallow; I had no doubt he’d fight off a bear if it really came to it! However...the continued sounds of shrill calls from the house before I eventually saw a small figure fly out of the house?
I couldn’t help but gulp.
‘It’s a wild cat...only a wild cat would make him scream like that...that or a dog.’ I thought, trying to cool my thoughts as Dillion slowly but surely started to lead me away.
Still though...as we continued to walk, Fidel’s chirps just wouldn’t stop. The further I followed Dillion into the forest, the louder his calls would become! I was worried, not for his safety or the potential fact that he would be injured but why he was making those noises...if it was because I wasn’t at home anymore and he was searching for me.
That alone was a more comforting thought.
“Are you really sure we should be doing this man? I’m just saying...the cult’s getting louder, my bird is worrying over something and my Dads expect me to be home-”
“Oh come on! Don’t tell me you’re going to pass up on the fun because a bird is freaking out?” Dilion laughed as he turned to look at me.
I sighed and glanced upwards, an act of trying to clear my head before I suddenly spotted Fidel come into view, a little less puffy than he was earlier but still in no condition to be flying anywhere! The bird let out another shrill call before a gunshot rang throughout the air, there was complete silence before...Fidel flitted across the sky in the opposite direction from the gun.
A cold sweat erupted on my body as I stared up at the sky almost absentmindedly.
Whatever that gunshot was...it wasn't mean to hit him.
Just shut him up and scare him off.
Why?
What would happen if Dillon and I- no...j-just I were to continue going into this forest?
Another gunshot? Possibly but, something that could’ve been for me and me only.
I heavy gulp went down my throat as I slowly started to back up, my eyes beginning to dart everywhere as I tried to search for a possible way out of this situation.
The only way was going back where I came from, through the forest and trying to lose them that way...it was suicide.
