My phone vibrated with two messages sent, the message I had sent him was simply…Hello. Aden had texted back, “evening” then followed by a second text that said, “I’m guessing you are still at work?”
I sighed as I looked down towards my phone, my neck cracking loudly from leaning my head back down, I just started typing again, telling him that I just got out of a very long surgery, not the most difficult, just a very long one and that I was exhausted. He sent back a text soon after that said:
“Oh, I’m sorry to hear that it was a long surgery, I can guess that with your expertise that the injuries sustained would have been intensive.” I was about to send something, but the text bubble popped back into view before another text came through that said, “Is there anything I could do?” even reading those words…his voice seemed to echo in my ears as I felt this pang of admiration ripple through my chest.
“When does your shift end?” came through soon after that. I looked up towards the clock on the wall, I’ve been at work sense about six this morning, I’ve still got two-three hours left. I looked back at my phone as I texted:
“my shift ends at midnight.”
“Well, luckily due to the school year having just started there is not a lot of paperwork I have to do, and my classes are later in the afternoon. Extremely late dinner?”
“What are you thinking?”
“Well, I know a very good ramen bar that’s few blocks or so, maybe a mile or two away from the hospital that caters to the hospital staff.”
“Why do you know about that?” I asked, just genuinely curious
“I had many, many late nights when I was a student. You do what you need to do when you’ve not eaten for a day and it’s nearly the ass-crack of dawn.” Alright, that made me laugh a little, it also…reminded me of when I was in med-school.
“They serve alcohol?”
“They have a very well stocked sake bar.”
“Please.”
“Alright, text me when your shift ends.”
“How long would it take for you to get here? Aren’t you half an hour from here by train?”
“I have various innate teleportation magics that allows me to move to familiar locations with ease. It will take me less than a few moments to teleport to there.”
“Okay”
“I’ll see you soon then, Vlad.” Came through before the texts stopped coming, I felt a soft smile spread on my lips at the idea of seeing him again, but…there was this deep coil of panic radiating through my stomach that made my scar burn as I thought about the fact that this was doing the thing I didn’t want to do. Being around Aden…will only make my desire to make the Bond deeper, more concrete, and stronger…worse for me to stave back.
I closed my eyes as I weakly willed my magic to thrum through my body to purge the exhaustion and weariness from my muscles, a soft warmth spread across my body before returning to the near bitter cold of the hospital’s extremely overworked A.C. Maybe I should just put some temporary gravity circles on my shoes so I could just like glide around everywhere and not have to walk or move on my own to protect my legs from leaving my body. You’d think I get used to being on my feet for so long, but because of my specialty, my surgeries are few and far between that my body can’t get used to the extent and strain. They usually keep a single bed somewhere in the breakroom for when a doctor needs to just crash for a bit, but…even my corpse wouldn’t dare sleep in a bed someone else has been in.
I flicked my hands around as I casted a short little spell causing the golden embellishments along them to flash a split second as I soon fell asleep with my head resting against the wall as I crossed my arms, the spell I used basically lets you take a few hours of sleep in just about ten or so minutes. The dream that started appearing in my mind was something that confused me, there was nothing concrete, all I could recall was myself running down this endless dark, dark corridor…there were no lights except these dull pale green lights that seemed to be far, far in the distance of the sides of the floor, but there were walls there, if not physical ones, there were walls that kept me sequestered on this endless hall. I heard this endlessly churning and shifting sound…of hissing, I heard the softly moist dragging scratches of scales on scales, but they were coming towards me from…all directions, but the weirdest things was…there was no sense of panic, no fear, no…nothingness, there were no bad emotions filling my chest, there was only these…strangely pleasant feeling emotions filling my mind and making my chest feel like a vice was holding my heart, the sound of the snakes was…comforting in the weirdest way possible, like instead of going away from them I should be…going towards them.
