Once there was a poor boy. His name was Harris and he lived
on the streets with his mother. Harris had a dream of one day becoming a vet.
He had watched day after day as stray animals
wondered around in the streets and wished that he could help them. But he knew
that dream was far from becoming real because for that they needed money to pay
for his education and they did not have it. His father was dead and his mother
sat with him day by day begging to passers-by for money.
Some people were nice and some people were cruel.
Some looked wealthy and some looked poor.
It was a tiring life to live, always wandering the
streets and asking for money and food.
Then one day when Harris was wandering around he
bumped into a wealthy looking man. “Sorry!” He spluttered in apology. The man
shook his head. “It’s alright never mind.”
He glanced at Harris and saw that the boy wore no
shoes. “Where are your shoes boy?” He asked.
“I have none.” Harris answered back truthfully.
“What’s your name boy?”
“Harris.” Harris answered.
The man knelt down so he was level with the boy.
“Tell me young Harris, if you could have all the money in the world what would
you do with it?”
The boy blinked in surprise at the sudden
question. Why had this stranger asked him that question? Harris stared at the
man.
“I’m not sure.” He thought aloud. “But I want to
go to school and I want to save all the animals that are suffering!”
The man smiled in surprise. “Then go study hard
and make that dream come true!”
“But how?” The boy called desperately as the man
got up. “How? I have nothing, I don’t even go to school!”
The man smiled then he turned and began to walk
away. Harris stood there staring after him in bewilderment. Turning slowly he
began to walk back to where his mother was waiting. When his foot suddenly
caught on something. A brown leather wallet was on the ground. Trembling Harris
slowly picked it up. The man must have dropped it when he had knelt down.
His hand made to open it and stopped. “I can’t! I
mustn’t!” Harris turned and clenched it tightly in his hand as he
began to sprint after the man. “Your wallet!” He yelled as he spotted the
gentleman in the distance. He continued to yell and run.
The man turned to look. The boy stopped in
surprise to see that the man was talking to his mother.
The man smiled as the boy hurried up. “Um, sir.”
The boy held out the wallet. “You dropped this.” The man gasped in surprise as
he took it.
“Thank you!” He told the boy. “Thank you!
You don’t know how much this means to me!” My boy nodded confused.
“My daughter” the man began. “Drew something
for me when she was very little. Iv kept it with me ever since.” The boy smiled
as the gentleman pulled out a small picture from the wallet. “Here.”
Harris gawped in shock as the man placed notes of
cash in his hands.
“Why?”
“Because you did what not many children your age
would do and especially in your living condition, you managed to find it in
yourself to give back something that could’ve changed your life! So it’s a
small token of thanks I’m giving you!”
Harris said nothing as he stared at all the cash
in his hands. “Go make that dream of yours come true!” The man called as he turned.
“Goodbye!”
Harris watched as the man disappeared into the crowd.
“Did you see that moma?” He turned to his mother.
She nodded silently smiling proudly.
..15 years later..
“My dog! you must save her!” A man stared
desperately at the vet.
”Yes sir, we are doing everything we can, but the
chance is slim! And the price is raising.”
The man paced up and down. “I don’t care how
much it costs, just save my dog!”
“Yes I understand sir!” The vet nodded. “But we
may have to call in some others so they can do some professional examinations
and tests.”
The man nodded. A few minutes later a van pulled
up outside the clinic and three people hurried out.
….hours later…
The man got out the car as he saw one of the vets
approaching. It was a young man. He smiled warmly at the older man.
“You will be pleased to know that everything
has gone well and your dog is now safe!”
The older man signed in relief. “Thank goodness!”
“Would you like to come and see her?” The vet asked. The man nodded. “Yes!”
The two made there way inside. “She will need lots
of rest.” The vet told the man. “You can take her home now!”
The man nodded relieved.
Paying the bills he left.
The vet turned to back away for the day when he
noticed a brown leather wallet on the table
“Sir!”
The man turned in surprise to see the young vet
hurrying after him. “Sir, you forgot your wallet.” The man smiled. Patting the
surprised vet on the shoulder. “Thank you!” He said.
“Thank you...Harris!”
