“Good morning, Hanzo.” Angela said, smiling in greeting as she got from her desk handing him a clipboard. “You can go through that door and fill it out. I will be with you shortly.”
“Understood.” Hanzo said, with a small nod of his head, he took the papers to where she directed. He walked into the all white room, feeling unnerved by smell. The faster this was over, the better. So he sat up on the examination chair and started filling out the form. After several long moments, Angela walked in.
“Sorry for the wait.” Angela said, pulling over a chair to sit next to him and adjusting her glasses. “Any issue with the form?“
“No.“ Hanzo said, giving back the clipboard for her to evaluate.
“Thank you.“ Angela said, while transferring the data to the tablet. “At least your penmanship is more understandable than Genji. So do you have questions before I start?”
“What sort of tests will happen?” Hanzo asked.
“Vitals like heart-rate, blood pressure, respiratory, reflexes, stamina, etc. As well as a few others, including blood tests, hearing and a full body scan.”
“Alright.“
“I see here you suffer from chronic migraines. When did you last take any medication?” Angela said, looking over the edge of her glasses. “Also, how often do you get those headaches?”
“I have medicinal herbs for tea that manage it and I took it last night.” Hanzo said, frowning slightly. “Occasionally, though I can still do my duty.”
“And I am not stopping you from it, either. Considering the advancements made in the past decade, your condition is quite manageable.”
“I would rather not get on any unneeded medications.”
Angela furrowed her brows, but nodded. “I can suggest diet and exercises as alternatives if you wish to continue with your current treatment. Could I keep a sample of your herbs?
“If it’s needed.” Hanzo said, reaching into the pouch on his cargo pants and handing over a small bottle.
“Thank you.” Angela said, placing it on the counter. “Let’s continue. You left this area blank. Are you sexually active? And if so, have you been active in the past six months?”
Nearly choking, Hanzo recovered quickly. As he was hoping to avoid that. “No, to both.”
“I highly recommend being cautious, but we have no regulations against consented sexual relations with other members as long as it doesn’t effect work and you practice safely. I can provide condoms when needed if you do not have any.”
Hanzo nodded, not knowing what to respond with.
“I understand it’s possibly a touchy topic to bring up, but we are all adults with needs, so I’d rather get through that subject before any unfortunate incidents.“
“I understand.“
“I think that settles that part. Let’s begin with the procedures.“
Brigitte hummed to a song in her head, shaking her hips along while the omelet cooked. She was looking forward to working on a new shield upgrade she had sketched a few nights ago.
“Morning Brig.”
“Huh?” Brigitte asked, looking back to see a familiar tuff of green hair and smiled. “Morning Genji. I’m making omelets. Would you like one too?”
“Thank you, but no, I had breakfast earlier. Just coming by to make tea before my meeting with Winston.” Genji said. “Hanzo’s exam will be over soon so he’d probably appreciate something.”
“Ok, is there anything he’d like in them? I’m already making ham and cheese.”
“His favorite was a special rice version back home but right now, ham and cheese should be fine.” Genji said with a chuckle.
“Is the rice one hard to make? Maybe I could make him that next time, to make him feel more welcome.” Brigitte said, putting the finished omelette on a plate before preparing to make another.
“It’s called omurice, and it’s fairly simple considering his other comfort foods. I can send it later to you.”
“That would be nice, thanks!” Brigitte said. “I guess you’re getting sent on a mission?”
“Yeah, hush-hush on the details for now.” Genji said with a wink. “I was wondering if you could do me a favor?”
“What is it?”
“Could you keep an eye on Hanzo while I’m gone? This is new for him and I can trust you.” Genji said, putting the tea into the container he brought.
“Sure.” Brigitte said. “I hope I’m not intruding or anything, but he seems really lonely.”
Genji walked over and put his hand on Brigitte’s shoulder. “Our family life was never really all that...normal. I think he just needs a chance at something different.”
“You’re a good brother.” Brigitte smiled down at him.
“I try, anyway I better head on to Winston.” Genji smiled back slightly. Then headed on out through the door.
Brigitte looked towards the door for a few moments before going back to the stove. Genji’s tone had changed to something that seemed just as lonely.
“Brigitte, is that your famous omelet I smell!” Reinhardt said, practically yelling across the room.
“Yes.” Brigitte laughed with his bravado, but still felt some concern for what Genji spoke of. “If you want one, you can have the one that’s already on the plate.”
“Danke!” Reinhardt said, grabbing the plate and a fork to eat. “Evening training tonight?”
“Sure.” Brigitte said. “Gonna work on the shielding concept with papa after breakfast first though.”
“I’m glad he joined as well. It is nice to have old friends to occupy these empty halls.” Reinhardt said, sounding bittersweet, before eating with gusto. “And since we are here, I can get my tan back!”
Brigitte sighed inwardly, but knew what he meant. Reinhardt missed everyone that he used to work with closely. Morrison, Reyes, Sojourn and most of all Ana. She would catch him quietly mourning their deaths sometimes when he was alone, looking at an old faded photo. He didn’t deserve that.
Hanzo groaned slightly, exiting his room, feeling drained from his checkup. Thankfully, the tests were quick and then he could just enjoy some sustenance in quiet. He knew that he’d have to be more sociable, but that would be for later.
Once reaching the corner that led to the eating area, Hanzo saw a large muscled man leave and head in the opposite direction. If Hanzo recalled the dossiers correctly, that was Reinhardt Wilhelm, one of the original Overwatch members.
After waiting until the taller man was out of view, Hanzo walked into the kitchen, hoping he would be alone. Though something threw him off. For a moment he swore he saw the back of a blonde woman in older medieval style clothes. Blinking a few times, Hanzo noticed it was Brigitte behind the stove.
“Oh, morning! Well, I guess late morning by now.”
Caught out of whatever just occurred, Hanzo heard Brigitte finally speak up.
“Morning.”
“I’ll have breakfast for you soon.” Brigitte gave him a smile, then saw his tea canister. “You can make your tea. Also, I hope a ham and cheese omelet is alright.”
“That will suffice.” Hanzo said in a low, grumpy tone but then sighed. “I apologize if that sounded rude.“
“Think nothing of it. Anyone would be grumpy, getting poked and prodded on an empty stomach.“
While the tea water boiled, he glanced back at Brigitte. The flash of the blonde woman still confused him. The doctor did nothing that would cause something like that. Maybe it was a lack of proper sleep.
“All done.” Brigitte said, placing the fresh omelet on the plate to serve one for each of them. “Mind if we eat together?”
“It’s fine.” Hanzo finished making the tea. Sitting across from her and pouring two glasses. “Then it is only fair that I share my tea as thanks.”
“Is it the same kind you made at dinner?”
“Yes.”
“I guess it’s a special blend?” Brigitte said, giving a smile.
“Someone I know makes it herself.” He didn’t know what he was so flustered by her smile. “It’s quite inactive.”
Brigitte swallowed her bite. “Yeah, our roster is still growing and a few of them are on missions. You’ll get to meet them later! I can even introduce you since I grew up with a few.”
“Is that why you joined?” Hanzo asked.
“Actually.” Brigitte started, her smile dropping a bit. “I didn’t really want to join. Not after what they did back in the disbandment, but the big lug wanted to and it’s hard to convince him to change his mind. Then again, I can’t blame him. I’m the same.”
Hanzo blinked. Even if he didn’t know her for very long, that wasn’t the response he thought she’d say.
“It’s not that I don’t want to help people. That’s something I’ve always wanted to do. Just-” Brigitte said. “Nevermind. I trust Rein, so if he can trust Winston, then so can I.”
Hanzo knew there was some inner conflict from documents that Akaki had collected. The U.N. backlash alone was the final nail in the coffin of the once loved organization.
“Anyway. Enjoying the food?” Her smile came back.
“Yes.” Hanzo said, taking a moment to think of something to talk about since the other subject seemed to weigh on her.
“Hey, I was wondering. Would you like to spar sometime?”
Hanzo looked up from his food. “Spar?”
“I like to keep in shape by training against people with different fighting styles.” Brigitte said, putting her fist up confidently.
Something in Hanzo made him want to chuckle, it reminded him of a once simpler time. “I suppose I can. If you think you can handle it.”
“I accept that challenge.” Brigitte grinned.
