Sigh . . .
I've been sitting in this stupid pack doctor's office for about 15 minutes now. I know that Prue and Trenton care for me and all, but I would have thought if someone was having a conversation that concerned me, I would be a part of it.
Well, apparently not.
My fiftieth sigh of the day gets cut off by the sound of the pack doctor's office door creaking open. I look over at the cause of the noise to see Roni fearfully glancing into the room. She's scared . . . good.
"Where are Renny and Mrs. Miller?" Roni asks, hesitantly entering the room without looking into my eyes.
"Prue and Trenton are talking privately. Want to know why?" I say, narrowing my eyes in her direction.
Roni coughs awkwardly and averts her gaze. I would be lying if I said seeing her this way wasn't amusing. She's usually very confident in herself, so seeing her acting so hesitant is new to me.
"Listen, Kai. I was ju—" Roni starts, but I cut her off before she can finish her sentence.
"I know, Roni. I know why you told them, I'm just upset with them. I'm sorry. I just . . . I wish they would just talk to me instead of speaking about me when I'm not around, you know?"
"Phew! Uh . . . I mean, yeah. I understand." Roni coughs yet again. She isn't doing a very good job hiding the relief she feels at my statement.
Just as I'm about to respond with something snarky, Roni and I hear sounds coming from outside the door.
"How is that even possible?" What sounds like Trenton's voice can be heard through the thick wood.
I look over at Roni with a questioning gaze, only to see she wears the same expression.
"What's going on?" I ask, hoping that Roni might have some idea of what's happening.
"I could ask you the same thing . . ." Roni trails off, walking over to the door and opening it slowly.
I get up from my spot in the chair I've been sitting in to walk over and stand next to Roni, looking out into the hallway to see Trenton, Prue, and a man that looks a lot like Trenton, but I don't think I've met him before.
I'm only more confused when I see the looks of shock on all three of their faces.
"Um . . . is everything okay?" Roni breaks the ice.
"Uh . . . I—I'm not sure." Trenton responds, eyeing Prue and the older lookalike of him.
"Dad? How is this possible?" Trenton asks the man. Ah, that makes sense. That man is Trenton's father.
"Well . . . I have heard of second—um . . . of wolves having a second mate, but I thought it was only myths." Trenton's father replies, attempting to remove his gaze from Prue, but—for whatever reason—failing miserably.
"Wait . . . MATES?!" Roni screams. Yes, she screams that right into my ear.
"Ow, Roni."
"Sorry, but I never would have thought that Tommy would find another mate after Tully passed." Wait, who's Tully?
"Who is Tully?" I decide to voice my thoughts.
"My mother." Trenton answers, causing me to turn my head in his direction only to see a sheen of sadness cover his eyes. His mom is dead, too?
All the while, Prue and Tommy? are still looking intently into each other's eyes, not moving a single muscle.
"What do we do now?" Prue whispers. It's so quiet I can barely hear her.
Wait, she knows about werewolves?
"Let's just, go sit down, yeah?" Roni suggests, leading us all back into the pack doctor's office. We all take our seats quietly and remain in silence for a solid three minutes before Tommy speaks up.
"Prue, is it? Aren't you the lone wolf that works at the school as a nurse?"
Woah woah woah! Prue is a werewolf?!
"Yes." She whispers yet again. I've never seen Prue in such a vulnerable state before. She's looking down at the ground with her hands in her lap, fidgeting relentlessly.
I'm not sure how to take this information, but for now, I'm more worried about what's bothering Prue than anything else.
"Prue?" I speak up, gaining her attention. She looks up at me and smiles, just how she always does.
Yeah, it doesn't matter if she's werewolf or human, she's still one of the only important people in my life.
She's still Prue.
"Are you alright?" I smile reassuringly back at her, hoping to soothe the anxiety she is clearly feeling right now.
"I . . . I just . . . There's something I need to tell you." Prue hesitantly admits to the room, still refusing to look at Tommy.
"What is it?" I ask her, keeping my expression calm in an attempt to soothe Prue's obvious anxiety.
"Well, you see . . ." Prue starts, fidgeting where she sits as she—I assume—tries to figure out the best way to tell us whatever she has to, "When I was 16, I was apart of the Gingerwood Pack over in Ireland. I was busy looking after the new born pups at the pack's hospital when the young Alpha, Alpha Wayne, came into the hospital searching for something.
"I knew as soon as our gazes met that Wayne was my mate. I set the pup I was holding back down into their crib and turned back to a not so friendly looking Wayne. I already knew he'd reject me, but what I didn't expect was for the whole pack to shun me because of it.
"So, after I left, I looked for packs that would take me in all over Ireland. I had to of searched for around a year or so when I finally gave up looking there and bought a plane ticket off of someone. I had a job at the time, so I had the money, I just wasn't of age yet.
"I ended up somewhere in Canada and found a pack that let me join them and well . . . let's just say that pack wasn't for me. From there, I found my way to America and I've been a lone wolf ever since."
The room is silent after Prue finishes her story. I don't know what to say. I never knew Prue had been through so much, especially at the age of 16. Now I understand why Prue seems to hesitant to get close to Tommy. Taking a quick glance over at Tommy, I can see that he's wearing a look of shock and confusion.
"So, I am also your second mate?" Tommy suddenly asks, scaring Prue in the process.
"Yes." Prue squeaks, her eyes on the floor.
Another moment of silence, that is until the sound of Trenton groaning lowly in pain echoes through the room.
"Oh right! Your hand." I exclaim, jumping up from my seat and sprinting over to Trenton. "Is it still really bad? . . . Don't answer that, of course it's still really bad, it's broken for crying out loud!"
"I'm alright, Kai. It'll heal." Trenton smiles, his dimples showing through are adorable as ever.
This seems to grab Prue's attention as she gets up from her seat and gently takes a hold of Trenton's broken hand, inspecting it in that nurse kind of way.
"I can take a look . . ." Prue trails, her eyes scanning over every part of Trenton's hand.
"It would take an X-ray to know for sure, but I think it's safe for me to say Trenton's hand is broken in about three different places. It'll probably take a week or so to heal completely." Prue informs us.
"Wow, look at that. An actual doctor that can tell me what's wrong." Trenton chuckles, childishly sticking his tongue out at his father, who reciprocates the gesture, a breathy chuckle passing his own lips. Prue smiles at the two as the laughter dies down.
"So, what're you guys going to do now?" Roni pipes up.
"I think it's best for Prue and I to discuss that privately and get back to you on that." Is Tommy's response.
"Alright."
Another moment of silence passes before I finally break the ice, "Where am I going to sleep?"
