Taking a car, two subway trains, and one bus to the Melicona/City Square town hall felt exhausting to Chantel. Butterflies filled her stomach when the group approached the building, which looked like a large, old-fashioned church building. Connected to the building was another big, modern, gray office building in her view. Chantel walked on every stair step, following Mara and everyone to the tall, brown doors to enter the town hall. When walking inside, the lobby had a mixture of people in the room doing whatever business they needed to do for the day.
Chantel felt overloaded again with all the different aura levels from the surrounding people, even after getting used to living here for a couple of months. The group met with a plump, white-haired secretary woman, who was furiously typing on her computer.
Mara walked up to the desk to check in and greeted, “I have a meeting with Mayors Percival and Koelin at 1:00 pm.”
The secretary woman gazed at Mara with her eyes looking worn out, “Please wait right here as the mayors will see you shortly.”
Chantel remembered reading up about the Supernatural town history awhile ago. She knew that Mayor Pervical was the mayor of City Square, while Mayor Koelin was for Melicona. These two mayors worked together, considering that Melicona was more of an extension town to City Square. After waiting in the lobby, a vampire male greeted the group, taking them to the elevators. Chantel had to fit herself in the elevator, squashed between Toby and Darren.
The elevator ride to the Mayor’s office did not take too long when the doors swung open. The vampire led the way to see a middle-aged, brunette haired man in a brown business suit. When the man saw Mara, he flashed the biggest smile on his face and got up to hug the woman.
“Mara! It's been a while! Come in, sit down! Sit down!” the man greeted everyone as the group made their way into the conference room.
The conference room was large and almost pitch dark, accompanying with dimmed candle lights, when they entered inside. Chantel squinted her eyes, noticing a long, rectangular mahogany table with chairs for the group to be seated. Not surprising, considering the mayor of City Square was a vampire. They had to be more accommodating by not having sunlight. As everyone sat in their seats, a couple of vampires came into the room with a mirror.
“Arthur couldn’t physically make it, so it will have to do with using the interface to communicate.” The man told the group.
“That won’t be a problem, Mayor Koelin,” Mara remarked, waving her hand politely.
Everyone sat and waited to see a vampire appear in the mirror. Similar to The Hexes manager, Alastor, Chantel looked into his cold, red eyes and shivered. Even though she was getting used to vampires being around, the feelings of uneasiness around them never went away.
Once the meeting started, Mara was the first to speak out among the group. “Good morning, Mayor Percival. I hope you are having a nice day,” she welcomed the vampire mayor.
“There better be a good reason for this meeting, Mrs. Alecsandri…” Mayor Percival’s tone shifted from polite to stern.
Looking at the vampire mayor’s demeanor, Chantel felt this guy was not too happy that he had to be called to a meeting during the day. She did not blame him because if she was a vampire, she would rather be in bed asleep instead! When Mara told the mayor the real reason for the meeting, his red eyes glowed brighter. All Chantel could do was sit there quietly, along with Darren and Leticia. Meanwhile, Amelia and Toby stood along the sidelines like statues, not saying a single word.
“Send them away! This isn’t our issue to deal with. We can’t be harboring fugitives. What if these “children'' are lying to you?” Mayor Percival accused the three of them.
“They aren’t lying!! Tobias and I know what happened to them! Our band mates saw what happened to them!” Chantel heard Amelia’s loud voice rang among the room.
The young woman leaned over to the meeting table, glaring at the mirror where the vampire was. Chantel was so used to seeing the bubbly side of Amelia. This was the first time she had seen Amelia’s face looking so pissed. Of course, Toby had to pull Amelia back, while Koelin showed a hint of displeasure in a response to her outburst. Chantel knew that now was the time to tell their side of the story.
“Miss. Alecsandri, your outburst was completely unnecessary,” Mayor Percival voiced his disgust at Amelia.
Getting up from her seat, Chantel leaned over the table and added, “Yes, we are fugitives, but we were also framed!”
She braced herself for impact, since she was still nervous talking to a vampire, let alone one that runs an entire city! Chantel felt someone touch her shoulder in reassurance to calm her nerves. Glancing back, she saw it was Darren who stood beside her. His face showed determination as he glared back at Mayor Percival.
“Listen, you don’t have to believe us. But we are asking you to hear us all out. We want you to know our side of the story. At least, hear our side before you cast judgement on us," Her friend, Darren said.
“Yeah, what he said," Chantel’s head shifted over to where Leticia’s voice brought her attention.
From there on, each member of the group told their version of how things went down. Chantel recalled the time the group met the Rise Of Light, Darren discussed his view, and last, Leticia told her version of what happened. When the group finished speaking their case, both of the mayors went for a moment. She figured the two did not know what to do with a situation like this. Mayor Keolin got up in his chair and paced back and forth while Mayor Pervical just wrote in his notebook.
The tension came into the air, making Chantel nervous once more. Suddenly, Mayor Keolin stopped in place, then glared at the group once again.
“Can you give some time for Pervical and I to think about what to do with these three, Mara?” Mayor Keolin asked.
“Very well. How many days until you make your decision?” Mara’s eyes darted over to Keolin and Percival's direction.
“We’ll keep in touch. In the meantime, you keep those three out of trouble. It’s enough that the city gets negative attention as it is,” Mayor Percival remarked, giving the three of them a harsh glare of suspicion.
After the mayors adjourned the meeting, the group left the room with a sense of tension in the air that followed them out of the building. Back in the car, riding back to the safe house, Chantel put her hand on her head, leaning near the car window, replaying the events of what happened at the meeting. It felt like she was on trial. She did not know who would believe in them? Chantel did not blame the Mayor of City Square for being so suspicious of Darren, Leticia, and her. This mayor only wanted to protect his city and the citizens who lived in it. She couldn't fault the man completely for being so rude to them.
When they finally arrive back at the safe house, Chantel stepped out of the car and took a deep breath, then thought to herself, “We got a long way to go with this…”
