"Mr.Grey. Class 6-B is here." The teacher leading Chris's class, another middle-aged man, said to their teacher.
"Thank you, Mr.Wilson. Now, class 6-A, 6-B, I will give you the instructions for the training event today. It is a skirmish among the two classes, and the result of the training can heavily affect your standings as the top 500 selected for the carrier trip." As Mr.Grey said that, the students tightened up. Everyone wanted to be on the carrier trip, so they had to take the training much more seriously than they thought.
"It will be a 5 vs. 5. There are 60 people in total, so I will select 12 captains. The members of each team are up to you guys. One weapon each, all small arms permitted. At the sound of your names, please step forward and select a weapon. You will be appointed team captains."
"Lopez. Taylor. Perez. White. Hastings. Walker. Miller. Young. Arden. Allen. Martin. Adams."
Six people from each class walked up, including Anna and Chris. They walked to the table covered in airsoft weapons.
Anna excelled at operating any weapon, not just small arms, but her favorite was the semi-automatic pistol. She looked at the other students, who all picked rifles or submachine guns with automatic firing modes, Chris was one of them. Anna picked up a pistol in front of her, which had caught the attention of the other students.
It must look like I am very arrogant, Anna thought.
"Good, now, go pick your teams."
The students broke formation. Will and Leah quickly ran to Anna.
"Anna, let us be part of your team," Will asked.
"Of course."Anna smiled, "Go ahead and pick your weapons."
Leah instinctively picked up the marksman rifle, while Will was a little hesitant.
Anna looked at the group of boys coming her way and sighed. But then, a girl dragging a boy behind her ran up, they were Ava and Luke.
"Anna, Anna, let us be part of your team!" Ava said quickly before the group of boys could arrive.
Seeing that Ava was probably the only girl that will ask to be part of her team, Anna accepted.
"Yay!" Ava exclaimed. Luke behind her seemed to be a little surprised.
They walked over to the weapons table and picked up a rifle each. They both seemed a little unfamiliar with the guns.
Anna knew that they wouldn't be much help. She looked over to Class-B and saw Chris swarmed by girls. He managed to escape the girls and got 4 other boys on his team.
Anna turned back to her teammates. Will had chosen a submachine gun. Anna wondered if he could aim properly with it. Even though the only competent shooters on her team were Leah and herself, Anna thought it was more than enough.
"Now! Everyone except for the two squads I will mention in a moment, please line up and the sidelines and get ready to observe. Hastings! Arden! You two are the best in each class, so you will start off today's training." Mr.Grey yelled into the crowd.
The other students left the training ground and stood beside it.
Anna looked at Chris across the field and smiled. Chris nodded in response.
The students on the sidelines were pretty excited. Anna and Chris were known as two of the best combatants in the entire academy. It would be fun to watch them go head-on.
"I will give each squad 30 seconds to come up with a strategy. After which, wait for my whistle on each side of the training ground." Mr.Grey said as he walked off the field with Mr.Wilson.
Anna signaled her teammates to huddle.
"Will, got a plan?" Anna immediately pushed everything onto Will, who didn't seem to mind.
"Yeah. I don't know everyone's capabilities, so go to your respective positions. Leah, you are our marksman, so run straight to the treehouse and gain the high ground."
"Roger."
"You," Will pointed at Luke and Ava, he probably didn't know their names, "you two have rifles, so provide cover for Anna and Leah behind a hardcover."
"Roger." They said in unison.
"And Anna, you just work your magic. Rush straight forward and take everyone out."
"Got it." Anna winked.
"Time's up! Get to your side." Mr.Grey shouted from the sidelines.
Anna and the others got behind a plank. Ava, Luke, and Will were gripping their guns tightly. They seemed quite nervous. Leah on the other hand was cool as ever. In fact, she was pretty excited at the thought of firing at live targets.
Anna looked down at her pistol. It reminded her of the one her father gave to her.
FWEEE!
As soon as the whistle blew, Leah hoisted herself over the plank and ran straight toward the treehouse right beside the starting point. She rushed from cover to cover, so the enemies didn't see her.
Anna followed Leah, but she wasn't aiming for the treehouse. Instead, she went straight down the middle. Running in a crouch, Anna managed to stay undetected, as well. As soon as she got halfway to the midpoint, she stopped at a hardcover. Crouching with her back against the wall, she looked at her teammates.
Leah had already gotten inside the treehouse and was scanning the training grounds.
Will stayed at the starting line and peeked over the plank, observing the other team.
Ava and Luke slowly crept up the left side of the field.
BRRRR. The sound of full-auto fire came from behind her. It seemed like the enemies had spotted Ava and Luke. Pellets rained down on them with extreme accuracy. They were probably Chris's shots.
Anna managed to take cover before the bullets hit them. Luke wasn't that lucky and took most of the shots in the chest.
"Ahhh!" He yelled in pain.
"OUT!" Mr.Grey's shout followed a sharp whistle blow. Luke walked out of the training grounds. Some of the audience were giggling at him.
Damn it, Chris drew first blood, Anna thought.
"The shots came from 2 o'clock!" Will shouted from the back. He was probably a bit out of Chris's range seeing that he still hadn't been sprayed by bullets, even though his upper body wasn't behind cover.
Anna turned around, now facing Chris's side. She waited for an opportunity to peek.
"Ms.Hastings! Enemy at your 10!" Leah shouted, after catching a glimpse of a person running between covers.
Anna nodded at Leah, and immediately went on the move.
She dashed out of cover from the left and sprinted for the next. With a pistol, she was much more agile than the enemies, however, she could still not outrun bullets.
BRRRR. Another round of full auto fire came from somewhere else. This time, it was clearly not Chris, since the bullets all splattered beside Anna. Even if it was Chris, it was too late as Anna was already behind cover.
PEW. At the sound of a single shot from Leah's direction, the person that shot at Anna was taken down.
"Ouch!" That must have been a lot less painful than what Luke experienced.
"OUT!"
Anna took that chance and jumped up from her cover. The boy Leah was talking about was right in front of on the other side. Before he could raise his rifle, Anna squeezed the trigger with him in the center of her ironsight.
PEW
"OUT!"
Having her position exposed again, Anna couldn't move for a bit. She was now on the enemies' side. Anna glanced around and saw 2 boys running toward Ava.
"Ava! 3 o'clock!" Anna called out to Ava, who jumped at her shout.
Ava panicked a little and held up her rifle, but it was too late. The two boys have already gotten to her.
BRRRR. Full auto was completely unnecessary in that situation, let alone from two people at once, Anna thought. That just caused Ava more pain.
"AHHHH!" Being sprayed down by two people at close range, Ava screamed.
"OUT!"
Ava slowly walked out of the field, on the verge of tears. Luke quickly ran up and comforted her.
Anna was a little mad that the two boys were so unnecessarily violent.
She saw that they were heading for Will next.
"Leah! 8 o'clock! They are going for Will!" Anna called out toward the treehouse.
They had already gotten to the cover that Will was hiding behind.
BRRRR. There was no scream this time, but there was no way Will could have escaped that.
"OUT!"
"Damn it," Anna muttered under her breath.
Leah spotted the two and turned her rifle around, pointing at the boy on the left.
Ignoring the fact that she didn't know Chris's position, Anna got up from her cover and aimed at the boy on the right from about 100 meters away.
PEW PEW! At two almost simultaneous shots, both the boys were struck in the back.
"OUT! BOTH OF YOU!"
The crowd gasped at Anna's shot. A pistol shot right on target from 100 meters away with barely any time to aim was almost impossible, but Anna had just pulled it off like it was no big deal.
Anna quickly sat back down behind cover and looked around for Chris. She found him right beside Leah's treehouse. He lifted her gun and aimed at Leah, who didn't notice his presence.
"Leah!" Anna called out to no avail.
PEW. It was a single shot. Anna was glad that Chris had it on semi-auto. She didn't want to see Leah getting hurt like the others.
"OUT!"
It was now a one on one. Excited cheers came from the crowd. It was time to see who was truly the best in the academy.
Anna wasted no time and began closing in on Chris, who returned Anna's aggression with a short burst. Since Anna had been mostly moving behind cover the whole time, she wasn't hit by any of Chris's shots.
Seeing that he was at the disadvantage, Chris moved toward Anna as well. They somehow ended on each side of the same plank. It was now a waiting game. Whoever fired first would be exposed without knowing the exact location of the other person, therefore putting themselves at a disadvantage.
Anna thought of an idea. She wasn't as calculated as Will, but she has the same decisiveness and determination.
Anna extended her hand over the cover without peeking with her body and fired blindly on the other side. She kept on pulling the trigger until it made clicking sounds, signifying it now had an empty magazine.
Mr.Grey didn't end the match, meaning that none of her shots hit.
Chris was surprised at Anna's rookie mistake. Her blind fire wasn't even anywhere close, and now she was completely empty. He had many questions. Why did Anna fire blindly? How did she not keep track of the remaining bullets? Why did Anna keep pulling the trigger even after the magazine was empty?
