"Well there's a familiar face," Jason chuckles as the girl approaches him. "It's nice to see you again." "It's nice to see you too Mr..." Lily pauses for a moment, trying to remember the name she glimpsed over on the plaque. "Mr. Roman," he reminds her, a bit amused at the absented-mindedness. "But please, call me Jason, everyone does. Well...almost everyone," He smirks and nods his head towards Alice, speaking the last part loud enough for her to hear.
"Oh hardy har har teach, you're so hilarious," she replies sarcastically. "That must explain why you love sitting in the front row." She opens her mouth slightly to speak, but no response come out. Instead, she furrows her brow and looks away as Lily and Jason share a small laugh over her reaction. Turning his attention back to Lily, he begins to speak. "Anyway, go ahead and take a seat wherever you like."
Jason faces back towards the board continuing to write notes. Thoughts race in his mind, his heart silently pounding in his chest. 'So my hope was right. She's the Lily in my class...' An administrative email sent out a few weeks ago informed the staff of new arrivals for the semester. Had there not been multiple "Lily's" joining this semester, it would have been easy for him to know before. He smiles for a moment, but it quickly fades away as negative thoughts invade his head. 'Don't even think about it. Remember what happens.' Letting out a soft and quiet sigh loud enough for his ears only, he forces his focus back to the board.
Eyeing the empty seat beside Alice, Lily eagerly trots over. Alice jerks slightly in surprise as she plops down, having gotten lost in thought trying to ignore the others. She glares over at her, irritated at the clinging behavior. "...Of all the empty seats in this room, you had to pick the one right next to me?"
"Of course! I told you we should get to know each other, I wanna be friends," the girl replies in a blunt but friendly tone, sliding off her peach colored book bag on the floor next to her chair. Alice stares at her, bewildered. How pushy can one person be? In most cases in her experience, people react negatively to her stand-offishness. 'What...the actual fuck is with this girl?' She thinks, uncertain of what to even say. All she can do is groan, and place her head in her hands, visibly fed up with her.
As he listens in, conflicting feelings start to rise in Jason's mind. Part of him feels overly defensive, forcing himself to not even give that thought a notion. The opposing side, feels drawn towards giving it a chance. 'No...No now is not the time for thinking like this.' Biting his lip slighty, he shifts his attention back to his current page, going back and forth between writing and skimming through the textbook. 'Right, so the two types of endoplasmic reticulum...'
Minute by minute, several students show up for the lesson, each greeted personally by the professor. "Evening Hayley, nice to see you." "Lance, what's up?" "Adam, how did the stream go last night?" And each one receives a positive response. Interested, charming, caring, it's no wonder why among the staff of Alpena College, Mr. Roman places at the top. Concluding his writing, he places his book on his desk, taking a seat at his computer.
The chitter of students begin to fill the classroom. He loads up his administrative programs, preparing to complete mundane tasks such as attendenace. While they load, his eyes flash up and down quickly to catch a glimpse of the Lily, who's chosen spot placed her almost perfectly in front of him. A little blush flashes across his cheeks, unbenknownst to the others. 'To think, you're really here...'
Love at first sight was always thought to be a tender, magical moment. But for young Lily, this moment begins the first step into her worst nightmare that will bring dark, buried secrets to light.
