Part 6 - How does Tapas make their money?

Part 6 - How does Tapas make their money?

Sep 08, 2021

Holding reading events every other day to giving away ink daily, how does Tapas afford to do all of this and make money all at once?

The main way Tapas makes money is by translating manhwas and manhuas. As you can probably tell, Tapas has translated hundreds of manhwas and is known as one of the largest official webtoon translation sites. The series Tapas translate all cost ink to purchase, varying from 250 ink to 375 ink. We don't know for sure what percentage Tapas makes off of these purchases, but following industry standards, Tapas probably takes around 50%. Let's say a manhwa has an average of 10,000 purchases per chapter and 350 ink to unlock, that;s 3.5 million ink per episode, which tapas would take 1.75 million of. 1,200 ink is equilvalent to $1 USD, meaning Tapas would make around $1458 per episode for that series. But of course, Tapa's doesn't actually earn that much in profit, since Tapas has to pay for their translators, cleaners, typesetters, as well as promotions for the series. I don't know how much translators make per chapter, so I won't be diving any deeper into that part.

Tapas also makes money off of in app purchases for ink and ad revenue as well. If you purchase $5 worth of ink in the app, You'll get 5000 ink. The app store takes a 30% cut and Tapas takes a 30% fee on the ink to make up for the cut. This means out of the 5000 ink, the creator will only recieve 3500 ink which is around $2.92. Tapas makes $3.50 after the 30% app store cut, which means Tapas made a total of around 58 cents for that purchase. Not a lot I know, but it adds up over time.

For every ad you watch on Tapas, Tapas rewards you with 10 ink.  Tapas uses Unity Ads, Ironsource, AdChoices, Addlovin, and more for their ads. Ironsource claims that on average 2 cents is made per video ad impression. Considering that Tapa's ads aren't skippable and the people watching the ads are watching the ads for a reward, Tapas probably makes even more than that average. Assuming Tapas makes 2 cents per ad, Tapas makes around 1.1 cents per every ad you watch. Since you need to watch around 30 ads to unlock a chapter, Tapas makes 33 cents per chapter unlock off of ad revenue alone.

Tapas also makes money off of the offers and surveys you do on their offerwall, but I'm not sure how much they actually make off of it since Tapa's themselves are the ones that set the reward rates for those.

Now I'll be discussing the other smaller ways Tapas makes money,
At the end of every community comic with ad revenue on, Tapas puts an ad at the end of every chapter
