Bram's eyes snapped open. There was fire racing across his skin and not just from Bijou's body laying across his. He struggled to sit up despite the weight on him, not bothered that he was waking up Bijou by doing so. Something was happening. He could feel it.
"Bram?" Bijou muttered.
"Shh," Bram admonished and pushed at Bijou. "Get dressed. Quickly."
"What's happening?" Bijou asked, suddenly wide awake and moving.
Their clothes were partially scattered around the bed but the lamp was still on so they were easy to find. In moments they were dressed, and Bram had his ear to the door. He didn't hear anything, but he felt something and he trusted himself.
"Turn off the lamp," Bram ordered and Bijou did so. Bram then took Bijou's hand and opened the door.
"How are we going to see in the dark?" Bijou asked.
"Shh." Bram hushed.
They walked out of the room and towards the stairs in the dark, Bram leading the way carefully, listening and watching. He saw someone coming up the stairs and let go of Bijou's hand to grab the person and turned off their lamp before they could see them.
"Suzanne," Bram whispered.
"Goddess!" Suzanne hissed. "What are you doing here?"
"I could ask the same of you."
"I don't know," Suzanne huffed. "They never tell me a thing. I was supposed to slit two throats and… Mary Mother. Not yours?"
"Suzanne. You have to help us get out of here."
"Us?" Suzanne began to reach for the lamp knob but Bram stopped her.
"Follow me,” Bram whispered. “There are stairs this way. Hold my hand."
Bram took Suzanne in one hand and Bijou in the other and went back the way he and Bijou had come, down the hall, past their room and down a small set of stairs that led out of the back of the inn into the moonlight.
Outside, Suzanne and Bijou looked at each other.
"Who is he?" Suzanne asked.
"A friend," Bram answered.
"That you're sleeping with." Suzanne pointed out.
"Nevermind that," Bram said. "We have to get back to Paris."
Suzanne shifted. "Damion is waiting in the car for me."
"Let me take care of him," Bram said.
Suzanne looked from Bijou to Bram, then shook her head. "Fine. But you owe me, Bram."
