Everything changed after that. It felt like I was living in some fairy tale. One I didn't want to end. For a moment there, I forgot I was even being held captive. I had convinced myself that I had just moved in with my new girlfriend. It made things easier to digest that way.
She loved on me like she never had before, I knew she could be caring but after we became official she took it to a whole new level. If there were ever a perfect girlfriend out there, it would be Dakota Foley. That girl knows how to love and take care of someone, her heart is just so big. Anything I wanted, she got it. Anything I needed, she provided.
She made it easy to forget, forget that side I had seen of her. Forget the murder and the blood and the cries for help. Forget how she kidnapped me and cut my hair off and stabbed me in the arm. Forget that she held a gun to my head and threatened to kill me too. Forget that she put a pillow on my face and tried to smother me out of this world.
For a moment, just a moment. I forgot all about who she was, what I had seen, and we just lived like a normal happy couple. Doing what any normal happy couples do. We made love, lots and lots of love. I swear we must have done it in every room on every surface of that house. Nothing was safe from us.
So, people ask me, was there a time when you didn't want to leave? And my answer is yes, there was. In fact, most of the time I was with her, I didn't want to leave. It just took me a long time to realize that. I mean, when someone treats you as nicely as she treated me, why would you want to leave?
The New Dynamic
"What classes should I take for my mini semester?"
"I thought you said online schooling sucks," I mash buttons on the game controller.
"Yeah but I still need my degree you know," she taps away on her laptop.
"Fuck school," I stay focused on my game.
"Not exactly the mindset I was looking for babe," she smacks my butt.
I die.
"Damn it," I sigh and pause the game.
"You really like that new game," she points out.
"You really like staring at my ass while I play it," I shoot back.
"Touché," she giggles.
I sit up and move to sit next to her, staring at her laptop screen. She's registering her classes for the upcoming winter mini-mester.
In less than 2 months, I will have officially been missing for 1 year.
"Gender studies sounds like a treat," I say sarcastically as I look at her schedule.
"Can you please take this seriously?" she pouts.
"Fine," I peck her on the cheek before grabbing the laptop from her.
I click through her required course list and she watches me.
As I am doing so she gets a friend request on her Facebook account. I click on it, some ugly guy.
"Leave him alone," she says.
"No way, he's a total douche, look at his profile pic. Sunglasses, indoors? Ew."
She laughs.
I click accept and he messages her.
"I can show you a good time?" I read the message out loud.
Followed by a dick pic.
She laughs.
"Go fuck yourself, how about that?" I say as I type the message into the laptop.
Then I send it to him.
He immediately unfriends her.
We both laugh.
"Focus please," she clicks off the tab for me, but not before I see what she was doing on Facebook, to begin with. She still had my ex's profile pulled up. I see a picture of me and BB together before she closes the tab.
To show her I don't care; that she can trust me, I ignore it.
"No douche is going to steal my girl," I say.
She rolls her eyes and kisses me.
I smile into the kiss.
I help her pick her classes and then she makes me lunch.
"Let me cut your hair," she runs her hands through it.
"No, I'm growing it out." I smack her hand away.
"But I like it short." She pouts.
"I can cut your hair, how about that?"
She makes a face, I giggle.
My hair has grown out into a short bob now. Very choppy and awkward looking, but I want to grow it out again. Make it very long like it was before. Before...
There she is again, Antonia Hernandez watching me from the fridge reflection as I eat. I flinch when Dakota pushes my hair behind my ear.
"You okay?" she asks.
"Yeah, it's nothing. Anyway, you best leave my hair alone girl. I mean it." I look down at my plate and ignore what I see.
She pouts.
"Hey, Halloween is coming up, lets decorate," I suggest.
"Really?"
"What?
"I've just never been a big Halloween person."
"What!? You are missing out, come on we can dress up and everything. It will be fun. We can even hand out candy."
"But what if—"
"No one will recognize me in a costume," I grab her hands in mine to ease her fears.
She eyes me.
"Trust me, please. It will be fun." I beg.
"Hmm, we can be doctors, scary doctors with bloody masks on."
"That's the spirit." I giggle.
She kisses me, I kiss her back, passionately.
The kisses quickly turn heated, but she pushes me back before I can get into it.
"Nope, you're not distracting me again. I still have so much left to do."
"Babe," I whine.
"I still have to start cleaning, and go to the store, and lots of other things."
I sigh and pull away.
"Don't be like that, we can do it tonight if you want." She suggests.
"Tonight is movie night, and it's my turn to pick. You're not getting away that easy."
"Worth a shot." She jokes.
I shake my head at her.
"I'm going to start cleaning, write down what you want from the store." She pecks me on the cheek, then she bathes me in kisses all over my face.
I giggle at her kissy onslaught.
She moves away,
"one more, one more," I say.
She rolls her eyes but pecks me on the lips before moving to clean.
I finish my food before making a list of all the groceries we need. I add on a few snacks I want. Then I help her clean by folding all the laundry. She taught me how to do it the way she wants it done.
"Okay, I'll be back." She ties her shoes.
"K," I resume my video game in her room.
"Love you." She moves to leave.
"Wait! Dakota!"
She turns back around.
"Mask," I throw it to her.
"Thanks, babe," she blows me a kiss. I catch it.
Then she shuts the door and locks it behind her. I can hear her leave the house, setting the alarm.
I just lay back on my stomach and resume playing my video game.
She comes back shortly after and unlocks the door for me. I help her carry the groceries inside, making the short walk out the front door to the car and back.
"That the last of it?" I ask as I set the pumpkins down.
"I think so, let me go check." She walks out and leaves the front door open.
I start putting everything up, just like she likes it.
"Yeah, we're all good." She shuts the front door and locks it.
"Ta-da!" she shows me a pumpkin carving kit.
I smile at her.
So after dinner, we carve out two pumpkins and set them on the front porch with one of the fake candles inside.
We use all the extra pulp to make some pumpkin pies.
"Open," I hold a spoonful of pie up to her lips.
She does.
I feed her.
"Emm," she hums in delight.
"Nothing like homemade pie," I say.
"Emm, hmm," she smiles as she chews.
"Okay, come on, I've decided what we are going to watch today."
She eyes me.
"I picked, Dream Girls."
She groans as she chews.
I stick my tongue out at her. I love musical movies, she hates them. She says the actual musical is always way better, to which I agree but come on, Broadway is shut down right now. This is the next best thing.
"You know the songs get stuck in my head," she whines as we make ourselves comfortable on the couch.
"Too bad, my turn." I grab the remote.
"Police say the case has officially gone cold. With no leads and no evidence they are at—" I change the channel off the news and find the movie on demand.
She wraps her arms around me.
I snuggle into her before pressing play.
Like usual I always fall asleep before the movie is even halfway over.
This is why she doesn't like when I pick movies because I never finish watching them anyways.
Can't be helped, being in her arms is just too comfortable.
