Miyo stands in front of the door to his apartment. His apartment is relatively big, it is 63 square meters. Its in a cheap neighborhood, where some elderly people live, but also some people that look sketchy. But Miyo doesn't mind this neighborhood. He doesn't have a lot of money, so even if his apartment is in a bad neighborhood, having an apartment this close to school, with this size and this prize, for Miyo this is great.
His apartment is on the 2nd floor, there are 3 floors in total in this apartment building. The door to Miyo's apartment is red. Miyo searches through his pockets to find his key, and when he finally finds it, he quickly opens the door and steps inside. As soon as he steps inside the apartment, before he can close the door, there is a white fluffy ball flying towards him at full speed. The ball hits Miyo in his stomach, he wobbles on his feet, and finally falls on the ground. His stretches his arms to pick up the white thing that hit him and is now sitting on his legs. When he picks up this white ball, from under all the fluffy feathers, he sees two big, shiny green eyes staring at him. This is his pet, DaiDai. DaiDai is a white bird bird. Somehow this bird has developed a habit of flying into Miyo as soon as he comes home.
Even though the bird has knocked him over almost every day, Miyo doesn't care. At least he feels like someone is welcoming him to this big apartment, and that makes him feel less lonely. Miyo really loves his pet because of this. Another reason he cares about his pet bird so much, is because he got it from his older sister before she went to America. Until now, Miyo doesn't know why exactly his sister left. He knows she had some sort of fight with their parents and left soon after. After all, Miyo also doesn't get along well with his parents. Just before his sister left, she gave him the bird, saying he should keep this pet so that he won't feel lonely without her. After that, she disappeared, and for half a year he didn't know where she was. This was three years ago. After that, she finally started contacting him again, and now they talk over the phone every weekend to catch up. Even though his sister is in America, he contacts her more often than his parents, who live only one city away. They usually don't talk about anything serious. Like his sister hasn't told him why she left, and what problems she's facing, he also hasn't told her his problems at school. Actually, Miyo doesn't feel like he has anyone to tell his problems to, and even if he had, he'd just feel like a burden.
After thinking about his sister, Miyo gets up from the floor, with DaiDai on his shoulder. He notices his open door and also sees his neighbor staring at him. He must have seen Miyo lying on the floor! Miyo suddenly feels very embarrassed, nods at his neighbor and quickly closes the door. The neighbor quietly laughs at the interesting sight, and goes into his own apartment.
Miyo's cheeks are still flushed. His new neighbor only moved here two weeks ago. Miyo doesn't even know his name yet, but he already embarrassed himself multiple times. The first time was the day after the neighbor moved here, Miyo fell from the stairs, right in front of his new neighbor. Another time Miyo forgot his umbrella and was soaking wet, looking terrible. His neighbor saw him standing in front of his apartment for a couple of minutes and then Miyo realized he forgot his keys at school, so he had to go back. Today his neighbor saw him randomly lying on the floor. Miyo's neighbor must think he's crazy. After hitting his forehead, Miyo goes to his desk. He can't just do nothing because he's too embarrassed. And even if his neighbor thinks he's crazy, who cares. Miyo doesn't even know his neighbors name, and his neighbor doesn't know his.
When Miyo sits down at his desk, DaiDai sits on his shoulder, and Miyo starts working on his assignment for Monday. Most of the assignment he already finished some days ago, but he still needs to make some calculations. Miyo is studying architecture. He started this study because he likes drawing and designing. Also the part that is building physics, isn't too hard for him. Since the start of his studies, he was always one of the top students. Miyo never had much trouble getting good grades. Even with low effort he can get fairly high grades, but he still puts enough effort into studying at home. That's because he needs the scholarship. His family isn't too well of, but even if they had enough money, Miyo doesn't want to depend on them, especially since they always fight.
While finishing and correcting the architecture assignment for Monday, Miyo falls asleep. Since at night, he can't sleep well because of his problems at school and problems with family, Miyo is sleep deprived.
Miyo wakes up. He slowly looks around, and sees that he fell asleep during his assignment. He takes out his phone to look how late it is. After all, he hasn't even had dinner yet. Looking at his phone, he sees that it is already past 12 PM. He also sees a couple of messages, from Haru and GoGo. They sent him photos of themselves enjoying a drink. They look quite cheerful in the pictures. He also sees some other classmates in the picture, but most of the pictures are just Haru and GoGo. Seeing how happy everyone is in the photos, Miyo slightly regrets not going with them.
With his phone in his hand, Miyo walks to the kitchen, his eyes are still half closed. He quickly prepares some spaghetti with some vegetables, and sits down at the small dinner table right outside the kitchen. While eating, he feels like something is of. Then he realizes the house is a little quiet. This is because he can't see his pet anywhere. Usually as soon as he sits down, DaiDai will come accompany him, but now, he doesn't see him anywhere. He thinks that maybe his bird is just sleeping in one of the closed rooms, so he first finishes eating his dinner.
After dinner, Miyo started to feel uneasy, so he went to look around his apartment to see where DaiDai is. First he walks to the study where he was working on the assignment before, to see if he overlooked the bird when he just woke up. When Miyo enters the study however, there is no sign of his pet. After that Miyo checks his bedroom and even the bathroom, but he can't find his pet anywhere.
At this point he's starting to panic. After this he checks every room again, but all he finds is an open window in the bedroom. Could DaiDai have flown away? Miyo is slightly confused. He had no clue what species of bird DaiDai was, and he hasn't seen him fly much, so he didn't even know for sure if his bird could fly away if he wanted to. Also Miyo didn't expect his bird to run away, since DaiDai followed him everywhere before, and even with open windows, the bird never tried to escape. That is why now, when Miyo can't see his pet anywhere, he is shocked and in panic. This is his precious companion and gift from his sister. How could he lose him?!
Nothing seems to be going his way lately. Miyo squats down in a corner of his living room and after a while pours himself a glass of wine. He feels completely defeated. At around 2 AM, Miyo is drunk. Since he is feeling lost, he ends up calling his friend, Haru.
After picking up, Haru at first curses at him. After all, it's 2 AM. When he hears Miyo's shaking drunk voice though, he asks Miyo in a soft voice, 'What's wrong?'. Miyo explains what happened, and even talks about some stuff at school and about family. After listening to his story, Haru feels really bad for Miyo. He consoles him for a while, and then notices Miyo doesn't reply anymore. Miyo has fallen asleep. Haru hangs up, and decides to go visit Miyo first thing in the morning. He also tells GoGo, who is staying over at his house, that they're going to go to Miyo tomorrow together.
