It was an unusual color for sure, but it didn't make his eyes any less stunning. The boy was mesmerized by them. Lowe stopped staring at the student when the other smiled at him, and his hands graciously started moving, drawing a wide grin from the boy.
"Hi! My name is K-A-D-U. I don't have a sign yet*. It's nice to meet you."
Lowe motioned to answer, but the teacher put both hands on the boy's shoulders, spinning him on his feet, and shooed him from his desk. Looking at his phone, he found Hunter's words. "You will have time to get to know each other after the class. Now sit. We will start."
He moved to find a chair close enough to the board and placed his things there. Kadu stood in Lowe's direction, next to the board, in a convenient position to the boy move his attention from him to the writing panel.
He concentrated on the subject, taking notes every time it felt necessary. He had studied the topic a little in his last college, so it was a good chance to acclimate to the new environment. And with an interpreter, it was easier to understand the lesson.
The class ended so fast, probably because he was enjoying it. When everyone got dismissed, the teacher asked for him with a gesture. At his desk, Lowe received some papers. Kadu interpreted Hunter's instructions while the teacher talked.
"This is our schedule. It has the topics we saw before you came and the assignments we did. I have put the bibliography we are using in that other paper. You can find the books in our library."
With a brief pause in his speech, Lowe took the opportunity to analyze the papers he was holding. He scrutinized the schedule, breathing in relief after he realized he had seen most of the subjects before, as well as some of the books and papers they were using. He nodded to show he was keeping up with them, and Hunter continued.
"Considering you are in a special case, the teachers from the classes you are taking this semester accepted your entering in the middle of their subject. They will choose how they will evaluate the components you didn't see with them, but here with me, you are doing an assignment with everything we saw from the start of the semester until now."
He gave Lowe another break to let the boy examine the paper, his eyes scanning through the words the fastest he could. It was a lot, but it seemed doable. He just wished that not all the teachers demanded so much like Hunter. He didn't want to interrupt his commissions' demands.
When his eyes met Kadu again, they continued.
"Don't worry. You have enough time to do it all. And Kadu is going to help you in everything you need," Kadu laughed a little at Hunter before interpreting the rest. "Don't let him slack off. He's a student too, but it's his job. You can boss him around just fine."
The professor gave him a warm smile, and he nodded, reciprocating it.
"If you have any doubts, you can contact me. I left my e-mail there. I studied a little how-to adapt things for you, but you are more experienced at this than me. It would be beneficial if you gave me feedback from time to time about what works and what doesn't. Let's make this work together."
He nodded again, gesturing thank you. He thought about his list, but Hunter had ticked pretty much everything he needed. Besides, he was going to have an interpreter, which felt great.
But at the same time, it arose his curiosity. People usually didn't know sign language unless they needed to interact with a member of their families or at least an acquaintance. He wondered if this applied to Kadu as well. It would be nice to meet other people he could speak to.
The professor started to organize his things, smiling while saying his last words. "I hope you have a good time here. You can search for me if you find any trouble, but I wish you don't need to." He bid the boys goodbye after he assembled his utensils, leaving the room.
Another warm smile reached Kadu's face, his gestures fulfilling the absence of words. "Come on. I will give you a tour around the campus. We also have to go to the library to make you an account there. You can even take some of the books you need after."
Lowe nodded, letting part of his curiosity escape. "How does this work? Do you have to tutor me around everything?" The other shook his head, complementing his answer. "It's like a buddy system, but I get paid for it. My obligations with you are restricted to your classes, so it's pretty much interpreting when you are with teachers."
The boy nodded again in understanding. The other continued. "I'm taking you around because I wish someone had done it for me when I first got here... Isn't it easy to get lost?" The boy laughed in agreement. "Yeah, the first time I came here, I didn't know where to begin, so I just wandered around."
They walked a little until his curiosity got the best of him again. "Why do you know sign language? Is it for a family member?"
Kadu looked hurt for a split second, but soon a tiny half-smile was back to his face. "No, I have learned it for myself." The boy's eyebrows stood in surprise, and seeing the curiosity growing in Lowe's eyes, he continued.
"Now, let's go get you those books."
