Jen kicked a pebble as she walked home. She could hear the snickering of Amanda's girl gang behind her.
Like I care, thought Jen. Go do that all day if you want.
Bump. "Sorry! Are you ok? It was an accident!"
A girl, roughly around the same age as Jen, bumped into her. Jen's stuff poured out of her bag. More snickers from Amanda's gang. Jen groaned. She turned to look at the girl who bumped into her. Blue hair. Pink streak amongst blue. Oversized uniform. Pencil behind ear. Reporter's notepad and clipboard. Bright green eyes. Was helping Jen pick up her stuff.
"Sorry again. I'm Sarah. Sarah McMillion," said the girl, sticking out her hand for Jen to shake.
"Uh... I'm Jen... Jen Wellman."
Jen shook Sarah's hand but quickly pulled back when she realised that Sarah's hand was smudged with ink.
"Oops, Inky the Pen striked again. Anyways, I gotta go. Junior Reporter Class. Bye!" said Sarah before rushing off.
Jen continued home.
Jen's home was a little shelter in the overgrown tree area of Woodland Park. She ducked through the undergrowth, careful not to be seen by anyone. She'd be fined a thousand dollars if anyone caught her. Luckily, almost no one dared to go there because of the snakes and crocodiles. Jen had no problem with them, though.
Jen swung open the rickety little door and it fell off. Must've done that too many times, she thought. She entered the small but homely space. Although it was in an area filled with big clumps of trees, the shelter was not dirty. There was no sign of mould or moss or weeds. The little concrete walls did their job and kept out all the bugs and dirt. She sat down on a spindly little stool and thought about her parents.
Jen Wellman is your average 13-year-old kid. That is, until she finds out she has elemental powers. She seeks to find the source of her powers. Along the way, she meets kids like her, all with the same intention. Together, they set off for the most dangerous adventure of their life.
