Your "Real" Self

Prologue

Prologue

Sep 22, 2021

The sudden yawn I let out of my mouth was heard in the distance, bouncing off the walls of a silent classroom. Inside was me, a second-year high school student, leaning on my desk waiting for the first class to begin.

Slowly I raised my body that was lying on the surface of my desk and looked at the wall in front of me, then with my right fist tightly clenched I murmured between my lips the following sentence.

"This be the day when my life as a student definitely will change!”

Repeating that phrase every morning without exception had become a daily occurrence for me a couple of months ago. Perhaps we could take it as a desperate act of self-convincement since, even though I had said it while smiling from ear to ear, the truth is that I despised with all my heart the student life I was leading.

It’s not like I’m being harassed by some group of classmates or students outside the classroom. I don't hate my teachers either, with the little interaction we have with each other it is impossible for me to have any kind of feeling towards them other than indifference. Attending school even less would be the real problem at the moment.

Having said all of the above, what is really wrong here?

I looked at the time on my cell phone screen. It was 8:28 in the morning. Considering the classes would start in five more minutes, no noise could be heard inside the classroom, and this despite the fact that each of the students belonging to class 2-E were already seated at their respective desks.

If I had to give a description of the atmosphere that surrounds me at this moment, one word would suffice.

“Sepulchral”.

That being said, what is the problem here? Why isn't anyone saying a single word? There is still time for classes to begin! Okay, I need to clarify one thing. My classmates and every single student and person in this school are somewhat unique.

Piip—

Out of nowhere, a high-pitched sound was heard coming from the front just to the side of the window. It was a sound similar to what the outdated computers produced when they turned on. This also indicated to me that the teacher had already entered the classroom.

Piip—

Piip—

Piip—

Quickly the same sound began to multiply around me. After a couple of seconds, words that were reproduced by a machine reached my ears.

[Stand up, reverence!]

Then, a different voice spoke from the other corner of the classroom.

[Good morning teacher!]

Although these words came from a different person, they were also reproduced by a machine.

Once the class representative on behalf of all the students in the room finished with the greeting to our teacher, the first class officially began.

I’m the only person who shows his "real" self.

In the most technologically country in the world, the government has introduced the use of Advanced Personal Androids (APA) to its population, which use a wireless-brain connection. Over the years APAs quickly became a commodity, causing people to completely lose interest in making "real" contact with each other.

Miyagawa Minoru is the only one in his school who does not attend classes using an APA, unlike his other classmates, he is not satisfied with his daily life as a student. With only twelve months left before the end of his last school year, Minoru must try to change the mindset of everyone in the school so they can start attending classes without using their APA.
