"Jebet! Jebet! Wake up!" I groaned against the violent shaking coming from the person with the annoying voice. "Can't you see I'm tired? Now leave me alone." "There is no way I can do that today, we have to leave early so we can get there!" the annoying voice beamed. "Ugh, who cares?" I rolled over on my side in a fetal attempt to escape him. "Uh, everyone ... except for you for some reason." Sounds of shuffling filled my ears. I sighed before finally starting to blink my eyes open to a pair of dark brown eyes right in front of mine. I flinched back abruptly, "Ah why would you do that? You're going to kill someone doing that one of these days." I finally sat up and rubbed the crust out of my eyes "You're such a baby, you know that?" The young male pursed him lips and cocked an eyebrow up. "But seriously it's the mating festival you should be excited." Damn humans and their lust. I mean I intended for life to self produce but I never meant for them to only think with their genitals. I sighed again at the thought and rolled my eyes, "I know I'm expected to go but I'm not making any promises on bringing a female back to the tribe." The boy smirked, "Yeah sure, I heard the girls from the Zeru Tribe have hips that no man could ever refuse to lock with." My face wrinkled in disgust, "As if. Like sex is all that great." "Are you kidding?! Of course it is. And it's not just sex.. I mean they become your companion as well." "Pffft," I cracked, "Oh yeah virgin? Cause you would know. Besides who needs a companion when you've got friends. I mean aren't I good enough?" "Woah man, that's a different kind of relationship," his hands flew into the air. "Love is its own kind of special thing." I stared at him with a blank expression. Humans are so complicated, "Whatever, see if you can actually satisfy one enough tonight to bring her home." He chuckled, "Oh ho ho, just you see. I'll have her calling out my name all night." His voice changed to a high pitch, "Ohhhh Kogo-" My hand flew to his mouth, "I don't need to hear this. Let's just get out of here."
I can at least say that for the past ten years I've learned a lot about humans. The language was a little bit of a pain to pick up, but their interactions have always confused me. Thankfully I was smart enough to introduce myself -or stumble myself in- to a tribe as child aged human so not much too was expected of me. The Awambe Tribe had taken me in as their own, especially Kogo and his parents - the tribe leaders. When I came to the tribe, the human form I took was similar in age to Kogo, so we grew up as brothers, which is why we have become so close. And now we journey together to a valley that marks the four corners of our neighboring tribe's territories.
The sun was just starting to set over the few scattered trees among the grassland casting out warm hues across the sky. Finally the radiating heat would begin to dial down as the day turned to night and the birds sung their last songs of the day. I peered ahead on the path to see the giant sagole baobab tree that marked the beginning of the valley. I clenched my bow tighter in anticipation and gritted my teeth. Tonight was going be a leap forward into this journey of living among humans. Why am I feeling nervous? There is no reason to feel nervous, I created the life here on this planet, they are as much a part of me as I am of them. I shook hoping to ease the tension. Kogo glanced over at me, "Hey, don't worry so much." He swung an arm over my shoulders and grinned wildly, "Tonight, we become men."
