Sherlock & Watson

Case #1: Murder on Cobalt Street (Part 2)

Case #1: Murder on Cobalt Street (Part 2)

Oct 13, 2021

Am I in need of adventure? It was the weirdest greeting that I ever got from someone. What adventure did I need? I came back from fighting, and the nightmares still haunt me. The limp is my constant reminder of what I have been trying to forget. Even coming to this city I was hesitant about it. Being in my home for so long I knew I needed to do something and move on from the dreams I'm trapped in. He suggested it and I was ready to try anything. To go someplace new and find my place back in this world. Is that the adventure I was seeking?

How did this stranger know that I was even a doctor? That completely caught me off guard that I didn't notice that he was leading me along. I don't even know how to begin writing about this experience. These pages are filled more with my nightmares than anything else. Maybe the occaisional trip outside of my house. There are no adventures and I don't think I was ever looking for anything like that.

~ John H. Watson

John stands there flabbergasted into silence as the man next to him continues to talk with the head officer, Lestrade. He tries to take in the scene between the dead man, woman in the police car, and the numerious officers passing him by. Finally, the man called Sherlock turns back to him.

"So my forenstic doctor. We will be going with the body to investigate it. Tell the nice officer based on your observation that the woman couldn't be the one who did it." Sherlock says. He also elbows John in the ribs. Unable to turn him down, John quickly looks over the body. His doctor instincts kick in as he scans over the mouth and the fingers.

"Based on just looking at the state of the body, the physical wounds came afterwards. Another cause of death happened before the stab wounds." John explains.

"You could tell all of that by just a glance?" Bryon says with skeptism.

John stands up straight again and shifts his weight from one leg to the other. "Yes. I've worked during the war,  graduated from university, and years of experience." John says with his head held high.

Facing against both John and Sherlock, Bryon lets out a frustrated sigh and motions for a police officer to come over. "Release the woman. We don't have enough evidence to keep her in custody anyways-" He is interrupted by his radio about another call. "Hurry up and lets go."

The officer bows to him and releases the woman. The coroner on site hands his card over to John. "The body will be taken here for examination." He says before driving off.

The woman comes over to Sherlock and bows to him. "Thank you so much for that, sir." Sherlock, however doesn't even bat an eye at her. "We need to get to that lab and look at the body. I can't believe that I ran into a case like this my first day here. Its like its my birthday." He says excitedly.

Sherlock goes over to the road and puts his hand up in the air to try to get the attention of the cab on the main corner. John turns back to the lady and takes off his hat. "I aplogize. I'm not sure what is going on here. I-"

John is interrupted by a voice behind him "Come on, I have a ride, we need to go. No time for distractions."

Bowing again and placing the hat on his head, John turns his back and follows Sherlock, who gets into a cab on the side of the road. Both of them get in the back seat and the cab takes off, leaving a stunned woman standing there.

--------------------------------------------

In the back of the cab, John stares out the window and Sherlock sits next to him with his right leg over his left and his hands folded on his lab. A few streets later and unable to bear the silence anymore, John speaks up.

"So...I'll get right to the point. Who are you and how in the world did you know all that stuff about me?" John says as he glances over at Sherlock.

Sherlock keeps his eyes on the road in front of him and he begins... "I know that you are an army doctor, served about 5 years in the war and just arrived him a few months ago. The stitching on your clothes shows that you have a percision hand movement and those clothes were originally from the city close to where the war was." Sherlock side glances over a Watson. "You also have a limp in your leg, though most of it seems to be just psychological influence I'm afraid."

"You are also a writing due to the ink residue on your fingers, probably writing down your experiences becasue of the bags under your eyes. It shows that at night you are barely getting solid sleep maybe from the war. Going back to the doctor aspect, I saw you approaching the scene, even though you tried to not get involved I saw your ideas wander towards the body. Its almost like even though you have left that life behind you are still drawn to it unconsciously." He stops again and then Sherlock goes to conitnue but John raises his hand to stop him.

"I think I have heard enough about myself. You still didn't answer my first question though." John says.

Sherlock leans back and cross his arms. "My name is Holmes, Sherlock Holmes. I'm a man who has an interest in experiments. The mysteries of the world are what make the chase worth while." He glances at Sherlock then back at the road. "The chase is here Mr. Watson, and we are the ones who are going to solve the unsolvable."

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
They both enter the morgue and are greeted by the top physican there. The body is there joined by another two beside it. Sherlock walks over and examines each one and the physican just stands off to the side, writing down some notes. After a few moments Sherlock stands up.

"So there were others?" Sherlock looks at the physican. John comes up behind Sherlock and takes a look as well before adding, "It seems like each one doesn't have a clear cause of death."

The physican still taking notes doesn't look up at them. "I already told that detective, its probably natural causes mixed with accidents." He sounds completely detached from the conversation and places the notes he was taken into a filing cabinet. "The only reason you two are allowed here is because its how things are done. As far as I'm concern the deaths aren't suspicious at all." He turns and walks out of the the room.

John looks at Sherlock and Sherlock glances down at the bodies. "Well then, lets get started."

Sherlock starts with the recent body and gives it a once over. He notices the needle marks in the neck area that were covered with a rubber material the same color as the skin, and he also notices that the stomach is hard. There is some discoloration on the hands and feet with peeled skin falling off. After continuing his investigation, his attention turns to the other two and he notices similar signs. With a smile he stands up back straight and points his finger upward.

"It seems that we have a serial posioner on the loose. Very cleaver man he is. Using a poison of some sort to be injected and then hiding it afterwards. Then we have the cover up with drag marks, discoloration, and the false sense of a struggle. Whoever this is wanted to throw off anyone who decided to take a close look at these scenes. Three separate cases but all connected to our perpetrator. Fasinating, simply fasinating." Sherlock talks with excitement in his voice. John on the other hand just watches him with confusion.

"Wait Sherlock, even if you could tell all of that. How can we even prove any of it or to clear then name of that woman?" John asks.

Sherlock walks over the cabinet and takes out the folder that the physican had. He opens it and flips through the papers, his eyes scanning each paper. "Hm....it seems like the physican didn't even note the blood contents in any of these bodies. I wonder why."

John looks over Sherlock's shoulder as well. "That doesn't seem right. There should be something there."   With both of their attentions drawn to the folder.  A woman enters the room, her badge reads, 'Physical Intern'.

"Um....excuse me? I'm looking for the physcian who is schedule here today?" The woman says. Sherlock looks up and a small smile appears on his face. He shoves the folder into John's hands and strides over to her.

"Just in time! It seems that he needed to leave in a hurry. However, due to be rushed away it seems that he forgot to draw blood and run it on these bodies. Do you think you could do it for us? Afterwards place it in the folder that my associate is handling." Sherlock talks with such charm and confidence that the intern visable almost has her knees buckle.

"O-o-o-f course. I will do that right away." She says.

"Thank you." Sherlock quickly responds then heads out the door.  John, quickly places the folder back into the cabinet and rushes off behind Sherlock, bowing to the intern as he leaves.

"Sherlock what are you doing?" John says with alarm.

"Its obvious that we aren't going to get any help from that man. When I'm investigating I don't want any hinderances dragging me down. I need useful resources and people to use." Sherlock says a matter of factly.

John's stride slows a bit and he drags his feet behind Sherlock. He chooses his next words carefully. "So, where are we going now?"

"Oh that is simple. We are going to the previous crime scenes. We know the names of the victims and where they were found. No crime scene is ever left completely clean."

Sherlock opens the door to the outside and John follows him, scratching behind his head.
