I knocked on the door of my brother's fairly large house. I hadn't been there for a while, not since the beginning of my research into the royal family. It's been 2 years since then. He'll recognise me. I don't think I've changed that much.
"It's quarter to 10 in the even- James. Oh." He didn't sound excited. I guess I'm not the sort of person he wants to be around, not since the argument we had with our other brother before I left.
"Uh, so my house just got raided and you're the only other person I know." I sounded stupid. It'd been a while since we last spoke.
"Raided? What idiot would raid your house?" he asked.
"Their ex." I replied, guesturing to Mykle, who was hiding behind me.
"Please don't tell me this is you're new boyfriend." At that, Mykle looked up, and looked at me in shock.
Yeah, so I hadn't told him I was gay yet.
"No, Ryan. They're just a friend." I explained.
"Yeah, just a friend. OK, I'll go by that for now." Ryan, my brother, sets his ideas in stone. It's hard to make him change mind. Somehow I'm going to have to do that, because he doesn't believe that the royal family have powers beyond imaginaion.
Ryan lead us into his living room, where his wife (may I just say, Ryan is 3 years older than me) sat. She seemed a little happier to see me - she's one of my closest friends from secondary.
"So, who is this friend of yours, and why did his ex raid your house?"
"Their name is Mykle," I stressed the 'their', "And their ex raided my home because I was helping Mykle, and their ex didn't really agree on it. You see, Mykle is the heir to the throne, and through my research, I found more about the powers gifted to his family and I wanted to help him learn to use them. Their boyfriend thought otherwise."
"Sounds like a great boyfriend, I hope he's been dumped now. Who was he?"
"Yeah, I hate him now. His name was Cayden." Mykle muttered. It was then I gave Ryan the 'don't say a word' look.
"Uh, so you're the missing prince?" Ryan questioned, changing the subject. Mykle nodded.
"Is all the power stuff James goes on about true?" Ryan's wife, Aimi asked, curious.
"Yeah." Mykle whispered. They were evidently nervous around the new people.
Aimi cleared out the spare room, which contained a double bed only. This night was going to be awkward, especially after what Ryan said.
I moved as far over to my side as I could. Unfortunately, that didn't help me sleep. I don't think Mykle could sleep either, because after a while they began a conversation.
"I'm scared." they whispered.
"Yeah, I don't blame you." I replied. I'd understood what they'd said. Cayden was capable of destruction. I knew that from experience - memories I do not want to look back to.
"What if he wins, James? He might take my powers, somehow claim the throne. I'm afraid of him."
"He won't win, I promise you. If he finds us here, Aimi and Ryan will also protect you. We'll all protect you. Cyaden will not get his way, I will make sure of that. You will be OK."
What Ryan mentioned earlier really set me off. It hit my 'holy shit, what the fuck' spot. It made me realise the rather obvious. I'm now 83.2% sure I'm in love with Mykle. It does make a lot of sense. Explains my nerves when I'm around him, the random urges I have to do random things, the reason I really can't tell my left from right when I'm so close to them. They just make me fall into the deep, deep, bottomless pit of affectionate feelings.
That night I had a strange dream. It felt like someone was rooting through my mind and plucking at my thoughts. The mind-plucker was tugging at the faint idea that maybe, just maybe, I really am in love with Mykle, and that we can be a thing. The thought was spread out across my mind like and map, and played over and over like a broken tape. My mind felt like a cinema, and someone was watching. It was like someone was watching my fantasies play out, wihtout my permission.
Morning
I awoke alone. I could hear voices from the living room - Ryan, Aimi and Mykle were already awake.
I rolled out of the bed and stumbled through the door, much too tired to put effort into anything. I walked into the living room, and everyone went silent - I'd walked in on a rather serious conversation.
"Uh, so what's going on? Y...you all just went silent."
"We were discussing some plans to stop Cayden, before he finds us. Katie and Francis have said that he's already isolating which locations in the city we could be in. We don't have long." Mykle replied. Honestly, it wasn't shocking. It's never taken Cayden too long to do anything.
"Oh. Then we really should make some sort of plan." I said.
And that was the start of it.
The beginning of our fight against Cayden.
