“What the hell,” Clover’s voice reached Jaxon and he glanced back. Blake had closed his eyes, his hands just above the water. Power radiated from the little boy, then he opened his eyes, and they were glowing. Clouds seem to move over his eyeballs like his eyes reflected the sky. Then another shockwave hit them and Jaxon shouted for everyone to take cover as at least fifty strange beings suddenly burst out of thin air. They looked like they were spirits made of water, taking the shape of laughing girls with long hair and dresses. They jumped in and out of the water, dancing across the surface.
“What are they?” asked Clover as she looked warily at the spirits.
“River spirits that by the celts were called Gwragedd Annwn, or by the greeks they were called Naiads. They are harmless unless you attack them,” Heidi said, frowning at the spirits who were smiling at her.
Jaxon got a bad premonition as he once again glanced back. Blake was smiling as he whispered something to the river spirits who chuckled then they turned their gazes toward the other teams. The spirits’ girly faces, suddenly turned into monstrous images with fangs and glowing red eyes.
“Damn it, Blake can control spirits!” Jaxon shouted a warning, but it was already too late. The river spirits had started to attack the boats, in their case the river spirits started to rip on the charms holding the boat upright. It was obvious they were trying to tip the boat. The green team didn’t fare much better, but then Millie glanced, her eyes turning completely white showing a hint of madness, and let out an ear-piercing growl. The river spirits shattered, clearly afraid of the girl.
Nightmane let out a growl, on edge from the mad aura the shifter girl was sending out and Jaxon had to wonder about the rumors of Millie being a Penumbra, but hadn’t the time to ponder it as all the spirits turned their attention towards them instead.
The green team and the blue team were going ahead but Jaxon’s team just couldn’t move forward. “Damn it, do something?” He shouted in frustration as the boat started to tilt.
Heidi threw him a glare before finally finishing her circle, muttering a few words the spirits were suddenly repelled by an invisible force. “Go!”
Jaxon didn’t hesitate and took chase into the warzone. Blake had called upon another spirit. A large crab grabbed onto the green team. Alex let out a roar and threw himself at the crab that had to let go of the boat.
“Go!” shouted Alex to his team as he fought off the crab only to let out a shout as the crab suddenly decided to bury itself into the river, drowning Alex in water.
The blue team suddenly had troubles as Hadrien abandoned his team, throwing himself into the water to save Alex. A heroic act, but unnecessary as Blake had already instructed the river spirits to help anyone who fell into the water.
“I see the goal, focus!” Clover shouted. Elaine was suddenly using what looked like a medallion, which turned the water into ice.
“Fuck you,” Heidi shouted, repelling the ice with the force of a wind whip.
Dale sends a fire ball, helping Heidi and the force of the wind and fire together created an explosion that send all team in a scramble. Jaxon’s skin was soaking wet and cold like ice, but he had his eyes on the goal. He was just about to shout out a roar of victory when the green team suddenly rushed past them like they had put on a motor on their boat.
In a sense they had, Erin had jumped into the water and pushed the boat with incredible force as she kicked her legs. It looked like a move straight out of a cartoon, which made Jaxon let out a shout of surprise as the shockwave from the green team passing finally tipped their boat and cold water filled his lungs.
