Chapter 1: 3 months earlier
Monroe sat back in his seat on the plane he was heading south on a mission to steal back a very large emerald and if he could the entire jewelry collection. He had 90% of his plan worked out, he was sure the rest was going to work out easily as it went on. His eye was currently twitching in annoyance as the stupid mutt who sat two seats infront of him kept flirting with the attendant. He couldn’t see him clearly but he recognized dog ears atop of his head. She was a rabbit like himself and clearly married from the ring she wore. All he wanted right now was his drink and a pillow but he seemed to not be letting her go. He finally pressed the call button and she clearly used it as an excuse to get away from him.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to make you wait so long.” She said pulling the drink cart up next to him.
“It’s okay, I’m not the stupid oblivious mutt who can’t tell someone is married.” He said a little too loudly on purpose, he saw the mutt’s ears twitch.
“You’d think some people would notice, I swear my husband needs to make this thing have an audio recording or something.” She laughed looking down at her ring proudly. “We’ve been married for three months now.” She said pouring his drink.
“Well congratulations, here is to a long happy marriage.” He said, taking his drink and saluting her.
“Awww, thank you, you’re just the sweetest thing, I hope I have a child as smart and as sweet as you.” She told him, handing him a pillow.
“Ahhh thank you…” He said feeling hurt by her comment but he smiled through it.
He was an Omega Rabbit and a little on the small side at 5’4” with long Honey Brown hair down to the tips of his ears skin the color of a very light coffee and warm chocolate colored eyes. He had a slim body, with wider hips that gave him a more curvy appearance. His ears and tail were of a soft brown and if he wanted to he could pretend he was a deer. He had a baby face and looked much younger than his twenty four years of age that was why her comment stung, she probably thought he was sixteen or seventeen. It didn’t matter if it worked for him sometimes, more often than not, he was still waiting for a final growth spurt that would probably never come. He was stuck with his baby face and small body for life, damn his genetics.
The rest of the flight there was no more issues the stupid mutt had clearly taken the hint, but he found his amazing blue grey eyes watching him occasionally and it bothered him because it both irked him and made something deep down stir in him. Sure his parents had been talking about him finding a mate recently, but he wasn’t ready to settle down and give up his life yet. He may be a wanted thief but no one would guess it was him based on his looks. His fingerprints were the only thing he’d ever left behind, no one ever would think an Omega rabbit would do something so devious as to con and steal. He wasn’t one of those selfish thieves that stole cause they wanted it, no he worked for a group who were more like recovery agents and robinhoods.
Gin had hired him right out of highschool, not only because he had clear talent but because of who his parents were. His mother was a makeup specialist now but she had one time been a grifter, and her partner was a stage magician and a thief, who later became her mate and now he worked as a science teacher. They had taught all their children the tricks of their trade in case they too wanted to go that route, but they had to do it safely, which is where Gin came in, she was the current head of the group following in the footsteps of her own mother, and her son, Vincent, would follow her. There were two reasons they lasted so long, one they kept low profiles and only stealing from the rich and greedy, and two they also occasionally worked for the government on occasions and had brought back millions, so they often turned a blind eye. Unfortunately there were some people who didn’t like this and there were some people who hated them because they worked for criminals. One said person had been stalking him in particular for the last three years, he had almost caught him last year when he set up an illegal pheromone trap meant for Omega’s. He wanted to forget that.
Getting off the flight he went right to pick up his luggage and stood there waiting, a few minutes later as it started to come out someone grabbed his ass, jumping and then spinning around to see who it was he saw no one. With a frown he rubbed his ass and then felt a note in his back pocket. He had only to sniff it to know who it was, that familiar Alpha scent that he could never quite match to a face.
My dear Bunny: So nice to see you again, let’s see who gets there first. <3 JRT
“That fucker, I’ll show you.” He grumbled to himself.
JRT was the call of another member of the group, one who he thought was currently busy on another mission but it seemed he was not. It irked him as he thought he would have time with this job, now he was going to have to rush it? He hated rushing a job he hated the stupid JRT for trying to swipe his jobs. They had been doing this for years back and forth, he had to admit he liked their style and they were more of a team player than he was and he respected them for it. But, he had no clue who they actually were, but they knew him. When he asked Gin, she would just laugh and tell him that he had to figure it out on his own, because apparently they had met several times before.
He saw his bag and then grabbed it or attempted to grab it, unfortunately it was heavy and he had to get help from a nearby Alpha who called him cute and sent him on his way. He’d probably thought him to be a kid and was trying to be helpful. He then got a taxi to his hotel and started to lay out his things. His first part was to make several dozen resin gems he had all the information of the size and cuts of all the gems, he had most of them already in silicone molds just waiting to be poured. He didn’t slack in any of his prep work. After setting everything up and pouring the first rounds he went down to dinner and saw the same mutt from the plane he was at the table with some other dogs eating quietly. He’d only recognized him by his blue grey eyes and his ears, it was hard to miss that heart shaped spot on his ear. He was quite handsome looking and an Alpha from the looks of it. He just figured it was a coincidence he was there, but he kept feeling eyes on him and when he looked they were looking at him then went back casually to what they were doing. Slightly creeped out he finished quickly and retreated to his room having dessert sent up to him. It was brought up by the hotel’s cute delivery robot.
The next day he packed up a rolling case with what he needed and went to do his job. Today he was Roger Evans, an expert cleaner for jewelry that had been hired to clean all of the pieces he was to steal, including the emerald and several smaller pieces that were in desperate need. The real Roger was currently doing the same thing in another state, he had canceled the appointment with the company and was coming in guise of the Beta deer. This meant he had to wear false antlers as it was summer, they were really a shed from a year before from an actual young deer. He showed up a half hour early smartly dressed in a long sleeve button up shirt with a sweater vest and glasses, his makeup was done to give him a more mature look his skin darkened a little his ears perked up and looking more fluffy and his tail brushed down and more elongated to imitate a deers. Most people thought all rabbits had fluffy cotton ball tails, that would be wrong. Their tails were just like deers but smaller, and yes some were rounded but he was a jack rabbit so he had a longer tail.
Showing his ID and letting his equipment be scanned by the company, he was let in and shown a little back room where he could do his work. It would only take him three days if he was careful enough. The security turned out to be laxed, they didn’t even have someone supervise him. His little room didn’t even have a camera, they were making it an overly easy job. He even did a sweep of the room just to be sure, searching for any bugs or hidden camera’s, there was nothing. He was however escorted from the display to the room, he’d have to call to be escorted back to return them.
The first thing he did was make a mold out of the emerald and took several pictures in different lights to make sure he would get the color right. The large heart shaped gem was still uncut and was a beautiful deep green with a hint of dark blue. He then cleaned it up and brought it back, when he went to check on his mold it was strangely missing. Figuring he’d just moved it he went back to work making molds and then cleaning, tomorrow he would start the swap out. Tonight he was going to work on the replacements. At the end of the day he checked all his molds and found the one for the Emerald was missing, he was afraid that he was going to have to make a new one, he could at least practice mixing the colors to match.
It took him an hour to find the right color combination, room service was once again delivered by the cute little robot. He was thankful for this and not a real person who could ask questions. He poured his first pieces and let them chill in the fridge and then he scratched his head trying to figure where he had left the mold for the emerald he needed to find it tomorrow. He checked his bag several times, and then giving up he crawled into bed early hoping to get an early start the next morning.
He woke up and packed up his things, checking the molds he found everything cured beautifully that night and his fakes were looking perfect. The bit of micah powder he used had given it a perfect extra shine, he put them in cooler bags, they couldn’t get too warm they’d get ruined. His first thing he had to do was change the temperature of the room, it would be noticeably colder in the room and someone might change it back but that would be after he was done. At some point after lunch break he found the emerald mold under the desk, he must have dropped or rushed to hide the smaller mold and not noticed till he’d accidentally kicked it.
“I must have had to hide it quickly…” he grumbled to himself. He left early that day as he was almost done with the cleaning.
The next day everything was set he had successfully made a replica of the emerald and it was all ready to go. He went in early and he noticed the camera’s were off in the room. Frowning he looked around and saw they were all still there, the few fakes he’d replaced were untouched, but then something caught his eye. The fucking Emerald had a strip of paper in it. He cursed and before they could turn the camera’s back on he made the switch and then took the next batch to switch out for his fakes. He ignored it as it sat in his bag till lunch when his work was done. All the pieces had been cleaned and switched out and the other’s that stayed were just simply cleaned and put back. He was now free to go, but he was annoyed that the one thing he wanted was the one thing he didn’t get.
He pulled out the fake as he got outside after taking his check, he’d deposit it later to an account that would bounce it around before dropping it into his personal account. Upon leaving he ran into a familiar Alpha scent, he covered his nose as the bitter scent made him disgusted. He thought that maybe it was a good thing he rushed this job, normally he would have taken a week cleaning and making sure his replicas were perfect. He hailed a taxi and as the taxi drove away he saw the familiar figure of the gorilla standing outside sniffing the air like he was a dog. Fear struck him, was he smelling him? Did he know that he was there? He watched as he turned and lumbered inside before they passed him.
Back at the hotel he rushed to pack everything away, he still was supposed to stay another night here but he didn’t like that the large gorilla was there. His name was Detective Tyler Maxwell, he was much older than him at the age of fourth five. He stood at 6’4” with salt and pepper hair, brown eyes that were a little small, a barreled chest and he might be considered handsome for being an Alpha, but his scent, his very appearance sickened him. Tyler had been after him for the last four years, and not just because he was a thief, no he wanted to make him his mate even by force when he found out he was an Omega. He almost had too.
He threw everything into his main luggage and stopped as he grabbed the fake emerald, he sniffed it, it was made out of sugar! He squinted and realized the center seemed to be liquid and the note was suspended inside of it. He read it aloud to himself.
“My Dear Bunny, I hope you hop to it, our favorite detective is in the area, thanks for the mold it made this super easy. I made this out of spearmint sugar and a sweet alcohol center just for you. Drink up and eat up, maybe you’ll get ahead of me next time! JRT… You god damn fucker.” He said reading it slowly. He’d have to eat it later, right now he wanted out. At least JRT was kind enough to make it his favorite flavor.
