Sobahle’s eyes shot open and she stared at the unfamiliar ceiling. Where was she? Why was she even there?
She turned to her side and stared at the IV tube that went into her inner elbow. She was in a hospital?
“I was wrong…”
She suddenly remembered the short conversation she had with Trevor. She had been sleepy then, but she was sure that he apologised. He also told her to rest up. Also…stress?
The door opened and she turned towards it hoping that it was someone she knew. Relief flooded her when she saw that it was Trevor. He grinned when he realised that she was awake. He walked towards her, and put the fruit basket that he was holding on her table.
“Bahle…”
“How long have I been here?”
“Four hours.” He said, looking her up at down. “Are you okay? How do you feel? Does anything hurt?”
She shook her head and cutely pouted as she tried to find any unnecessary pain. Nothing.
“Help me sit up.” She said, not sure how she was supposed to do it. Being in a lying position made her want to go back to sleep. Trevor easily nodded and used a remote to make the bed go up. “Thanks.”
“Is there something else I can help you with?”
She shook her head.
“Bahle,” Trevor sat down so that they could be eye level. He held onto her hands and smiled when she allowed it. “I’m so sorry. I was foolish before. I regretted what I said as soon as I left, as cliché as that sounds. I realise how hurt I might have made you feel. I’m so sorry, baby.”
Sobahle sadly smiled, removing her hands from his. His heart sunk at the action. “Trev… I’m not pregnant. I found out later that day after taking some home tests.” She was looking at her hands, finding it hard to look at him in his eyes. “I’m sorry I did not tell you earlier.”
Trevor put his hand on her cheek. She lifted her head and stared into his pure eyes. “Don’t apologise.” He smiled at her. “The doctor already told me.”
Sobahle was silent for a while as she stared at his face. She was able to see how tired he looked. It was as if he hadn’t slept for a few days.
“Is the reason you’re back because you found out I wasn’t pregnant?”
“No.” Trevor pushed her hair behind her ear. He then moved his hand to hers and held onto it. “I came back because I was willing to risk my career for you. I was willing to start a family and move to the suburbs with you. I was ready to give it all up.”
“But you worked so hard to get here.”
“I also worked hard to be a better man for you.”
She smiled, looking away from him. Tears rolled down her cheeks.
“Why am I like this?” She used her other hand to wipe the tears away.
Trevor removed her hand and wiped the tears himself. He smiled when she looked up at him.
“I love you, Sobahle.”
