Linda closed up shop just after sunset. She waved goodbye to the employees that worked for her and began to walk home. Her apartment was only a few blocks away, and so she did not need a car. She had walked to and from work for years and never had a problem.
She crossed the street and began to walk along the buildings on the sidewalk. As she passed the alley, she noticed something shiny from the corner of her eye. She looked, and two red shimmering discs looked back at her. She was curious, so she moved towards the shimmering objects and into the alley. Suddenly there was a growl and the red discs moved closer, along with the shadow.
Linda ran as fast as she could out of the alleyway, the shadow following after her, snarling as it got closer. She turned back onto the sidewalk and quickly made her way towards the bus stop. Once there, she turned around to see what was following her. A stray dog ran out of the alley and across the street, away from Linda. She sighed. It was just a dog.
She continued on towards her apartment complex, noticing shadows moving around in the poorly lit areas between buildings. She tried to pay them no mind. She stopped when she saw similar red shimmering discs in front of her. She was at the street corner, and the discs were across the street. She held her breath for a moment. It was once the traffic light turned green that the discs turned green as well, being reflections off the traffic pole across the way.
Linda sighed once again and crossed the street to her apartment building. She entered the main door and waited by the elevator. Glancing down the hallway, she noticed two more discs. She shook her head. It was probably just the exit sign being blocked by something in the dark. She turned her attention to the elevator as it opened, looking back to see if the discs were there. All she could see was the exit sign as it flickered on and off. She smiled to herself, chalking what she saw up to coincidence.
Linda rode the elevator up to her apartment and opened the door. She stepped inside, turned on the lights and began to take off her uniform. She stepped into her bedroom to hang up her clothes in the closet. When she opened the closet door, she noticed two glowing red discs. She thought back to the times it was just a dog, or a reflection, or a broken sign.
Linda laughed as she reached to turn on the closet light, thinking it was probably the light from her bedroom lamp reflecting off something. She was wrong. The discs did not go away, nor did the shadow standing before her. Her laughter turned to fear as the lights went back out.
