“Why are killer rabbits so sturdy!?” FeelinLucky yelled as he smashed his grimoire into the face an enemy mob.
“Maybe if you used your magic it wouldn’t be so bad,” Suzuha replied as she slammed her guitar into another monster bunny.
Her rabbit exploded in a puff of smoke. In its place, an item sack sat neatly on the forest floor. Suzuha took the sack into her hands and walked over to Lucky. I recently dispatched a rabbit and stopped to watch this exchange.
“Can…can I just hand this too you? It’s a rabbit haunch. You could probably cook it.”
“I think?” Lucky reached out and took the bag from Suzuha.
The little sack disappeared. Lucky said “inventory” and his fingers moved through another menu of his own.
“Yeah, it looks like we don’t have to open a trade menu. That’s good to know. Now if only I could figure out how to cast spells. We can’t save Kit-Kat with me bonking the enemies over the head with a book.”
I leaned against a tree and smirked, “Gives a whole knew meaning to the saying knowledge is power.”
Suzuha giggled too. Lucky was not amused, “This is serious, Ajak! We have no tank, Suzuha is barely a healer, and I haven’t seen either of you use a skill yet! This is a death sentence!”
I sighed because I knew Lucky was right. Anger got the better of me. Frustration needs an outlet. My leg swung in a beautiful arc at the tree behind me. The force of the swing felled that tree in a single blow. Not only that, lightning crackled around my foot. There was a scorch mark around the area I made impact.
“That was Roundhouse!” Suzuha cheered. “You even added your lightning buff to it. How did you do it?”
I walked up to another tree and took a deep breath in and exhaled. In my mind, I was running through all the skills that I could remember. That’s when I saw it. It was as if my attack skill hot bar was ingrained in my subconscious. On instinct, I unleashed the starting attack for most of my combos, 1-2 punch. My fist connected with the tree, followed by another three skills that flowed together well. As the last skill hit, I saw small rays of light rise around me. Time slowed down around me. I had activated my key buff, The Zone, lowering all my skill cooldown times.
“Close your eyes and concentrate. Our skills are engrained in us.”
Suzuha and Lucky followed my commands. Suzuha was the first to activate a skill. Her guitar let loose a beautiful chord, granting all three of us a green aura with a health regen buff.
“I can’t play guitar IRL. This is surreal.”
FeelingLucky opened his book and flipped to a seemingly random page. His mouth moved and incoherent whispers came forth. As he chanted, two purple magic circles expanded; one underneath him and the other a few feet away. Rising from the second circle was a bulky human body. A bulbous mass of bones and meat stared down at Lucky through sunken, dead eyes. In its hulking hands, a meat cleaver dripped with green ichor.
FeelinLucky dry heaved, “Well, Flesh Hulk is a lot more disgusting when you’re standing in front of it and not on the other side of a monitor.”
Suzuha slid backwards and grimaced, “It smells too! Why did you have to become a Necromancer? Couldn’t you have become a Demonologist instead if you really wanted a summon?”
“But I like the fantasy of having a horde of zombies under my control.”
I moved my body between them to diffuse the tension. “Hey, look at it this way, we know how to use our skills now. And look at this baby. At least we have some sort of tank now.”
I slapped the meat sack on its undulating stomach. What I could only assume was some sort of body fluid trailed from my hand to the point of impact. It took everything I had not to vomit right then and there.
Suzuha grabbed her guitar and strummed a few notes to no effect, “I say we take the rest of the day to practice using our skills, and then we set out tomorrow.”
Lucky and I agreed. The three of us set out to learn exactly how we should fight. Many a murderous hare and evil mushroom were slain in our quest for practice. There was one problem though, due to the difference in level between us and the enemies, none of us could get through a full set of skills. But this would have to do for now. Kit-Kat was waiting for us.
