The one who didn't fall

Chapter 1 (part 3)

Chapter 1 (part 3)

Oct 14, 2021

Mason
Kevin's the type of douche that girls like, they find his whole 'bad boy' attitude attractive or something. "Mason bro, could you get me two Winseka breakfasts to go? Thanks buddy."
Buddy? What, we're friends now?
"Kev to go orders are placed at the serving counter and there are like hundreds of customers before you, get in line 'buddy'." I know there is professional rules in place where you as the waiter should be respectful and polite to customers but every single person here knows exactly why we treat Kevin the way we do and he ain't even ashamed. He treats employees like crap, he complains about every meal served, he doesn't even leave tips for those who put up with his behaviour and he never uses "please" or "thank you" when it comes to employees of any kind.

After I finish serving the booths I head back in to the kitchen. "Yo, May, could you come over here for a sec?", I hear Matthew, one of the other waiters, call me over. "What's up Matt?", I ask as I head over to him at the kitchen counter where all the orders of the square tables are placed after being made. Fortunately this helps us split the workload between booths and tables and keeps us from mixing up the orders, I got my own counter for booth orders.

"So I'm kinda running behind, I started with booths since you were running late and now there are a few customers at my side of the diner that are getting impatient," he explained and I immediately noticed how exhausted he looked. His forehead was glistening with sweat and he put his hair in a bun, Matty refuses to cut it, it's up to shoulder length and Momma gave up on the hair net idea. " No need to ask, just give me table numbers with orders and I'll carry them out for you." I owed Matt for this morning and he wasn't even blaming me, it's honestly the least I can do.

"Thanks May, you're a lifesaver." I don't know why he insists on calling me May but it stuck before I had the courage to tell him to stop and it's not just me. Everyone finds it hard to say no to Matt and the fact that he doesn't use that to his advantage makes you want to do things for him even more. Basically, he's the best friend everybody wants and needs. Girls are insanely attracted to him but he doesn't give them any attention. Elaine thinks Matt's gay, I wouldn't be able to tell in all honesty but she seems to think she has some type of radar for this kinda thing and her judgment of people is usually super accurate.

I take the orders Matt gives me and deliver them to their tables. Before I pick up the last tray I see a toothpick in one of the toasted sandwiches. "Hey Matt, what's the toothpick for?", I ask him as he comes back into the kitchen to get the next set of orders being prepared. "Oh right, there's a table with two new faces, the girl  asked for extra mayo on her chicken sandwhich, she said something about it melting away from the heat." Hm, logical.

Izumi
I was speaking to uncle Jerry about all the places I could apply to work at while I do my online courses to finish college when I saw a new waiter carrying out trays. The one that came to take our order earlier was cheery and warm, he spoke like he was speaking to family. He had brown hair but it was long, shoulder length I think, and he had green eyes that basically sparkled. He looked shorter than me and reminded me of a puppy, a puppy I so badly wanted to play with. However, the one waiting tables now was taller, muscular, more serious. He had a tattoo sleeve on his right arm, he had black hair that was short but seemed to have great volume at the top and he had a black t-shirt on. He smiled when he gave customers their food but it disappeared as soon as he turned around. "Hey zoom-zoom, how about asking them if they need help here?", dad asked. It wasn't a bad idea, I have worked at a restaurant before and it looks like they could use a pair of extra hands, especially at the serving counter. Before I could answer, our food arrived.

I looked at my plate being handed to me by a tattooed arm and looked up. I saw eyes that looked unusually grey but also, tired. He seemed incredibly sleeped deprived but was smiling and talking with uncle Jerry like he had all the energy in the world. "Izumi this is Mason, y'all are about the same age.", I don't know what uncle Jerry meant but I just looked up and said hi. "Welcome to Winseka. You ordered the extra mayo, right?", he asked me. I nodded and he told us to enjoy our meal before he left. I picked up my sandwich and bit into it. It was one of the best sandwiches I have ever eaten. "Wow, this restaurant has one amazing chef back there!", I said just before taking another bite, I hardly gave myself time to breathe. "Restaurant? That's too fancy for us dear, here we just call it a diner, ", uncle Jerry laughed.

I liked it and I had a feeling that I would enjoy working here. So I got up and went over to the serving counter to see if I could get any information on whether or not there were job openings. I found a stool open and went to sit hoping to catch an employees attention. "Wow, being across the room from me wasn't enough for you, huh?", I turned my head to the right to see the douche staring at me with that smug look on his face. My face hardened. Am I supposed to be polite as the new girl? Because I don't think that's how this is going to go.
