Darklion Black

Part VIII: Something changed.

Part VIII: Something changed.

Oct 16, 2021

There were no more attacks in the northern city, the vampires remained silent for several weeks. I did not communicate with him for a while, my life could be said to have continued its usual routine.

That night was different, his presence was felt around me again, I was walking through the palace garden; something I had done since I was a child. He appeared again, and from that moment on, even if he didn't answer me, I talked to him.

I didn't know who I was talking to yet, but I had gotten used to him, my hands and shoulders hurt less. I had the idea that he was a soldier of King Darklion. I was starting to feel comfortable with him. It was a secret that I could finally keep with myself, I decided not to talk about him to my father; my father once told me that they were irrational beings, thirsty for blood and revenge. But this vampire was not like that, he was rational, and he was also intelligent. At first, he was arrogant with me, but over time he stopped behaving like that.

One night, he tried to contact me as usual, but I wasn't there. I didn't answer him, and he couldn't sense me. Suddenly he was in my room, wondering how it was possible that he couldn't locate me, he stopped at a desk that was near the window; I had a notebook open, I had drawn something on it. When he got closer, he noticed it was his face.

He took another step closer and looked better at the drawing in my notebook, taking it from the desk, he looked at it carefully, it was him; his features were well detailed, including his eyes.

Footsteps were heard in the direction of my room, where he was at that moment, he hid himself trying not to be seen and hid his presence.

I wasn't feeling well that day, I was weak. Some of the doctors took me to my room, placed me on my bed and left the room.

He stayed silent, watching me from the darkness.

 - I know you're there... why are you hiding?

The room remained silent for a moment. He decided to take a few steps without leaving the shadows, he was there. It was the first time we were close.

From his silhouette I saw that he was a tall, corpulent man with long, straight hair, which looked silver as it shone slightly with the brightness of the night light that the moon reflected, he took a few more steps and came out completely from his hiding place. His skin was white as snow, he had a fiercer look, but with beautiful hazel eyes. As he took another step, the moon managed to reflect his face although not completely I could clearly see a beautiful face, with delicate features and then there were those full, blood-red lips. His expression changed when he saw me, and a subtle smile crossed his lips.

He did not take another step, but his expression stopped being severe when he saw me.

 - You don't sound like always, your face is different, are you okay?

 - Well, I'm a little tired, that's all.

 - You weren't here when I tried to contact you today.

 - I wasn't feeling well this afternoon. My father took me to the doctor in town.

 - Doctor?

 - I had to help a family that was attacked by vampires, the little boy was also seriously injured, but he wasn't bitten.

 - Vampires? In which city?

 - In the southern kingdom...

 - In the southern kingdom? You were away. Can you tell me what happened?

 - I don't really know, but they were attacked by vampires. Your King keeps attacking more innocent villages.

 - The southern kingdom isn't even part of your father's kingdom, why were you there?

He stopped for a moment, looked me straight in the eyes and then added.

 - I know your skin is pink and your cheeks looked flushed, but now you look like this.

 - I'm fine, I just need to rest.

Yes, indeed this "irrational being", as my father calls them, wasn't irrational at all, he quickly understood what was happening.

 - Does this happen to you every time you use your abilities?

 - It didn't always happen to me, but now it happens every time I use my abilities to heal, my energy is consumed much faster than before. But you shouldn't worry, resting helps me recover.

Darklion remains silent for a moment.

 - Healing skills, is that your skill princess?

 - That's right, that's my magic.

 - I must go.

His voice changed subtly, and his expression became serious.

 - Thank you for coming today, it's nice to finally see your beautiful face.

He took a step back and then turned around; he was facing away from me.

 - Irhin?

 - Yes?

 - You are a beautiful woman.

Before I could react to what he had said to me, he disappeared.

I noticed that "something changed." He seemed worried, something that was not common for him, he always spoke badly about us humans. He was so cold and distant, but now, he only said those words - "you are a beautiful woman."

The months passed, he and I had become closer. We could not talk every day, but he always tried to visit me at least once a week. In this change that I noticed in him, I had understood that I had been the only human who made him remember his old self, his human part: that part of his existence that he decided to leave in the past after learning about his father's death.

He appeared in my room; everything was dark, something very unusual since I was always there, waiting for him. I didn't feel well that night, and I took sleeping medication; so, when he arrived I was sleeping.

He entered the room thoughtfully, looking at me while I slept. I was not conscious, so although his presence was quite strong, I did not wake up. He was walking to approach my bed when he heard voices in the hallway and vanished. The royal guards felt a strange presence around them and immediately reported it to Lestat. He alerted the royal guard and everyone in my father's palace took their respective places to protect him.

He then saw the human he had cursed. His fierce red eyes scanned the palace. The royal guards were nervous, their evil aura could be felt. Lestat felt it. The curse he had carried on his arm had somehow been directly connected to King Darklion, and for that reason Lestat knew that presence. The same one from the dark palace, the same one from that moment.

 - He is here...

At Lestat's confirmation, the king's guards became even more nervous. A royal soldier went to the king's room. They were on guard. Lestat walked through the palace, as if he knew where Darklion's presence came from.

Standing in the hallway leading to my room, he addressed him.

 - I know you are here, show yourself.

He did not utter a single word. But his eyes fell on him from a distance. He recognized him, it was that soldier who had managed to infiltrate his castle. Just hearing his voice made him feel angry, he knew that Lestat wanted me.

He let out his anger, he felt the darkness invade the king's palace, Lestat felt a burning in his right arm, right where his scar was.

 - Where are you damn king of vampires, show yourself Darklion?

A hiss was heard throughout the palace, then his voice was heard. So fierce and poisonous.

 - Who do you think you are pronouncing my name?

Lestat heard his voice, it had made him nervous, he knew of the greatness and power of Darklion, if he was in the palace his king was in danger.

It took strength and courage to be able to stand in front of such evil power.

 - Show yourself.

A whistle was heard in the air and an echo in his voice. The vampire responded laughing loudly.

 - Before you?

A cold laugh was heard throughout the palace.

 - You do not deserve my mere presence before you... insignificant human. I can kill you and your damn king in a single blink.

Lestat felt the threat directed at him and the king.

 - Don’t dare touch my king and his family!! You are a damn demon, I will finish you and your damn species that I can assure you, even if my life depends on it!!

Lestat was in the hallway that leads to my room, he began to walk towards the mirror that was next to the window next to my room. He turned his back to the door, standing right in front of the mirror, and the vampire's presence became apparent. He saw the shadow reflected on the floor, right behind him, however, through the mirror Lestat did not see anyone, but when he looked down, he could see her behind him, she was much taller than him. He turned on his feet, and there he was, with bright red eyes staring at him fiercely with an evil smile on his lips that could barely be seen because of the shadow. He revealed part of his fangs, revealing an expression of greatness and superiority. Lestat could only see his silhouette, but he could not see the entire being of that Vampire.

Lestat took a few steps back and hit the window with his back. His knees gave way and he fell to the ground, he managed to keep his balance without falling completely to the ground by stopping his body with his sword and in front of the vampire he looked up and the room darkened, the nearby soldiers called out to Lestat, but he could not speak. He took a few steps forward, placing himself right in front of Lestat, his eyes still fixed on him and with a big smile on his lips and then the vampire vanished.

Lestat's hands and legs began to tremble, he was still in a state of shock, finally his legs that had their knees on the marble floor gave way, and Lestat touched the ground with his hands just to stop his body from falling completely on it.

The soldiers quickly ran to where Lestat was lying and approached to try to lift him up.

 - No, stay back... don't touch me.

 - General Vanhelsing, let us...

 - Lieutenant Mina, I gave you an order.

The lieutenants waited near where Lestat was.

An expression of magnificence, and greatness before a human without a single extraordinary quality. The intrigue of knowing that his food was human blood, and he was precisely a human. All this went through Lestat's mind while this vampire disappeared right in front of him, a few centimeters away, he made him feel inferior and insignificant.

He took a deep breath, and then he understood that ability; that greatness and superiority that he made everyone who was in front of him, his victims, feel.

 - I am not insignificant, you damn vampire!!! I'm going to destroy you... I swear!

Lestat stood up, took his sword from the floor and began to walk outside; the lieutenants followed him, he was about to put his sword away when he noticed that the door to my room was slightly open, he stopped immediately.

 - Lieutenants, continue, I'll catch up with you in a moment.

Lestat entered my room to see how I was. I was sleeping, he walked around my room and then approached my bed, sat on the seat at my dressing table, his eyes watching me.

 - Irhin, have you seen a vampire before? They are incredibly strong beings... fast; and...

Just thinking about me being near a vampire was unacceptable, their evil presence could hurt me so much.

 - Is that the reason why you are getting sick so often? It is impossible. Irhin could not bear to be in the presence of such a diabolical aura, she would not have been able to resist. I felt the way I felt in front of him, how would she have felt in front of that demon?

Lestat remained silent, completely focused on his thoughts. The wind came through the window and subtly moved some pages of the small notebook in my drawer. Lestat's distracted eyes went straight to the notebook and then he turned the page to the movement of the wind.

 Written in beautiful calligraphy:

"The changes in me were inevitable.

I met you, and love stole from me the ability to run away.

I lost a battle I was never meant to win.

You conquered me.

But I'll admit—I didn't put up much of a fight.

I didn't want to win.

I wanted to lose. Very much."

B.”

 - W-what the hell is this?

Lestat read that short paragraph written on some lost pages of my notebook; I hadn't read them yet, since they were a few pages beyond where I had left my last drawing.

 – Is this Irhin's handwriting? No, I have to see his handwriting.

Lestat flipped back a few pages and found a page where I had written something.

“Your love is far more than I need, but you leave me wanting more.

To you my heart will always lead. Your love is what I have been waiting for.  I MUST love you always, my beloved…

you have loved me many days and loved me oh so well…

-Irhin”

Just then Lestat heard noises in the hallway, he took the little notebook, put it on the bedside table and left my room. At that moment he was angry; he knew that I was feeling something special for someone; those words could not be written to someone who had never experienced love. He felt betrayed, for some reason he felt that way, although he never told me what he felt.

My Dearest Love,

The moon hangs heavy tonight, much like the one reflected in your eyes when we first met. Though time stretches and bends for me, my memories of you remain sharp, untouched by the centuries.

Before you, my existence was an endless night—empty, cold, and unchanging. Then you appeared, a burst of warmth in my twilight. You are life, Irhin, vibrant and radiant, making even my cursed existence feel bearable.

I know what I am—a creature of the night, bound to the shadows. Yet, you see past the monster I fear I am. You see me. Ion. A man hopelessly captivated by your spirit.

Every smile, every breath, every moment with you is more precious than all the treasures of time. Though my touch is cold, my love burns fiercely for you. A vampire’s love is a dangerous thing, a paradox of darkness drawn to light, yet I swear I would never harm you.

I cannot promise you forever, for my forever is not the same as yours. But I give you my heart, such as it is, a heart that beats only for you.

My love will always be where you are—in your memories, your laughter, the air you breathe, and in our son. I will always be there.

I will love you… forever.

Yours eternally,
Ion Black
