The night seems to draw slower after their conversation. Lilith and Henry sit in their both as people walk through to eye them. But as the last batch of people walked out Henry falls back against his chair.
“Man, my back is killing me…”
“What happened krypdyret mitt?” She asks making his face heat up.
“Some normals thought it would be funny to mess with the wrong serpent.” Henry explains as Lilith leans against the edge of her tank, the dark seafoam green of her scales luminescent within the near clear water.
“Oh min…” She shakes her head as Henry’s boa scales the side of her tank. Lowering her arms, it climbs onto her shoulders.
“Don’t mind it. Remy and Milo helped me out so all’s fair that ends fair.” Henry smiles watching her sink into the water as the next round of guests stepped into the tent. His boa slipped from the tank and into his shoulders as the guest watch them with mixtures of shock and disgust.
Lilith slips out of the water splashing some of the people as they draw a tad to close to the railing dividing them. Jumping back, Lilith ducks back under the water her dark orbs glaring some of them down. Before a cup is thrown, that is when all hell seem to break lose.
Sinking into her tank she hits it back out the sticky reminisce making her gag as Henry jumps up out his chair. Reaching into her tank he pulls her out.
“What the hell is wrong with you?!” He shouts as Lilith tries and fails to rub some of the drink off her skin. “Stay behind the line and no drinks or food are aloud in our tent can’t you fucking read?” Henry continues to yell laying Lilith beside her tank to grab another tub off to the side. ‘Why is it I always get the assholes…’
Ducking down he scoops up the bucket turning around one of the men has jumped the rope now only inches from where Lilith sits growling deeply.
“Back up you idiot! She isn’t afraid to break a neck or two.” Henry quickly warns as he reaches to touch her tail. Only stopping when the large boa snaps at his fingers. Drawing back he scrambles back over the line. Coming face to face with Lucy who cracks her knuckles.
“And what do we have here? Rulebreakers?” She questions her thick Russian accent slipping from her lips as he pulls the man off the rope. Dropping him onto his feet she points towards the exit. “All of you get out!” Laying her hand on the man’s chest, she stops him in his tracks. “Your ticket is revoked.” Holding her hand out a soft swirl of smoke drips from behind the man and the ticket manifests into her palm.
“But- I just-“ The man splutters trying to speak but her harsh glare silences him just as quick as he started.
“You will be cleaning the mess you have caused. Only fair.” Lucy motions towards Henry who rushes over with a good-sized bucket and rags. “Empty the tank then take Lilith to her room.” Handing the bucket over to the man Henry mocks a salute before rushing off behind the tank. Pulling an iron chain a loud pops rings through the tent before the rush of water drenched Henry’s pant legs.
“All ready boss lady!” Henry yells ducking down to grab Lilith who wraps her arms around his neck. “Anything else?” He questions hopping down and fixing his hold on her.
“No return to you room until further notice.” Giving a quick nod Henry runs out the room the boa close on his heels as they make their way behind the big top.
“Hadn’t seen her get that angry since back in marsh town when someone was hitting on Rico.” Henry chuckles and Lilith nods in agreement. Getting back to their cart Henry deposits Lilith into a large tank, the soft lights calming the room as she disappears under the water for a minute. “This night has just not been my night that’s for sure…”
Rico stands on the highwire, watching the patrons below as he slowly makes his way from one side to the other in thought. Milo is below their puppets walking around with no strings as they joyfully laugh at the expressions.
That is before his eyes landed upon his wife, pinching the bridge of her nose she walks around to not disturb their act. Giving her a confused look, she lifts her head to look at him. Waving he moves from the high wire. Meeting her at the bottom of the ladder.
“What is wrong?”
“This is the worst bunch of people I’ve met thus far…” She grumbles as the walk towards the back of the big top.
“The night is almost over my love. Tomorrow will be a better day.” Rico reassures her, taking her hand in his as the walk out of the big top and out onto the maze of carts. The soft lights coming from Henry and Lilith’s cart cascade over the grass.
With a sharp smirk, he pulls Lucy into him. Nearly dwarfing her in height he chuckles sways.
“What do you say about a little dance to calm your nerves mi amor?” The smile that splits her features answers his question as a new sound joins them, a soft calming tone flows through the grounds.
“Snarky magician…”
“Ah, your snarky magician. Do not dare deny that.” Rico chuckles as they slow dance.
From a few carts over Yukiko and Katie watch the two for a second. Playing with Katie’s hair Yukiko hums softly to the music.
“They always made an interesting pair.” Katie speaks up hands over a book as she continues to watch. “Do you think will ever be able to go out in the world like them?”
“What do you mean? We see the world now do we not?”
“I mean… like walk the streets do what normal people do… Do you know how bad I wanted to take you to that ice cream shop on the last stop!” Katie turns to face Yukiko with her arms outstretched.
“Well, why don’t we? The next town that has an ice cream shop we will go enjoy it like everyone else.” Yukiko tilts her head as Katie groans in frustration.
“How are we going to do that? If you hadn’t noticed sweetheart, we don’t seem the normal type…”
“They can stare all they want; we are special, and they should be lucky to see such beauty.” Yukiko huffs folding her first set of arms over her chest as the second front takes Katie by either side of her face.
“Alright, Alright!” Katie waves the hands away, pulling a smile she moves to open a small hatch on top of their cart. “Then next town… you, me, ice cream date.” Pointing between them as she speaks Yukiko chuckles and nods.
“Agreed.” Slipping into their cart the sun starts to peek over the horizon sending patrons home and everyone to their shared rooms.
Laying his hand on Alex’s hair Rico runs his hands through it before taking a seat at his desk, fingertips running over the old, raised leather. Drawing a quill from his hat a splotch of dark ink laces the tip.
“Another?” Lucy mumbles leaning up against the pillow’s, bright eyes against the candle lit room as the curtains contained the suns rising rays.
“Perhaps… only the restless will tell.” He responds as a small blob of darkness rounds his legs. Laying a hand upon his knee the blob slips away almost reluctant for a moment before slipping into the darkness. “We got to test those lights today…”
“They are going to hate it.” Rico nods scribbling down upon the parchment as the sun made its way over the tree line. The fairgrounds silenced as iron gates block the entrance.
“Good day mi amor.”
“Good day moya lyubov'”
