As dusk sets, the crowd starts to diminish.
Before I knew it, no one was out on the streets. You would've thought that it was a ghost town.
Every step that I took felt amplified by the dead silence.
It was a struggle keeping up with the fleet-footed duo. It had turned into a wild goose chase as they made intricate turns around the maze-like alleys.
I had lost them at the cathedral in a blink of an eye.
---
As strange as it might be, the tavern nearby remained open.
I decided to grab a drink to work through my lost cause.
Entering, I was surprised to see the tavern bustling with locals coming over for a drink.
I sat across a few men far less superstitious as they spoke freely about the missing locals.
"Can you believe it? My wife is freaking out over some missing folk! It's the Nosferatu, she thinks!"
The man mocked in a native accent while chugging a tankard of beer.
"I said, sweetheart, they can take their chances, but whoever it is can't hurt me even if they tried!"
"They wouldn't dare to meddle with the guards of Vistrița!"
One of the men uttered.
They appeared to be guards of the town.
"You know what? If I ever saw one of those ghoulish creatures, I'll hang its head on one of my walls!"
The rest erupted in cheer.
"And they think that those noblemen had something to do with it. They were as pale as sheets!"
It seemed that the disappearances occurred soon after a group of aristocrats arrived.
The conversation had gotten stagnant almost immediately with these narcissists. I gulped my beer and left the scene.
---
I set off to look for an inn that might still be willing to let me lodge in for the night as I recalled a few key details that caught my attention.
It seemed radical to associate the disappearances with the vampires as I remained skeptical rationally. Paranormal beliefs should be deviant at this point.
On the other hand, imbuing magic to objects is an advanced technique among ordinary people.
As far as I know, casting a protection charm would be an astonishing feat for the commoners.
It would take far more than a group of acolytes from the Holy Church to imbue magic into an object.
The veteran and his sidekick could not possess such a high caliber of maneuverability for magic.
How did they get their hands on such equipment?
Who could they possibly be?
