The one who didn't fall

Chapter 1 (part 4)

Chapter 1 (part 4)

Oct 28, 2021

Mason

As soon as I left chief Jerry's table I speed walked to Elaine who was busy at the serving counter. I tapped her on the shoulder and told her to circulate with another employee, named Wendy, for a smoke break. She called Wendy over, we took off our half aprons and headed straight for the locker rooms right at the back of the kitchen. "Hey Elaine did you see the new girl?", I asked as I walked past the lockers towards the exit. "Yeah I saw her walk in before I came to get you here this morning", she replied while we exited the locker room into the alleyway on the side of the diner. We both lit our cigarettes.

This girl was beautiful, no doubt. She had black long hair that fell like a blanket over the top half of her body and she had the nicest dark brown eyes. She had a cute little mole right under her left eye. If I'm being honest, I sound like a creep inside my head right now but her features were so captivating and I would love to know how long she'll be here. After we got about halfway with our cigarettes in silence I spoke. "Her eyes... but her accent...", I was kinda confused about where she could have come from but I really wanted to know. "Her accent? I haven't heard her speak but is she not asian?", she asked before pulling from her cigarette and blowing some smoke in the air. "No, well she sounds American. The man, whom I'm assuming is her father, doesn't have any asian physical traits." I figured she might have gotten her eyes from her mother. She was tall though, like her father. "and her father seemed as though he could be related to the chief", I added.

When we were done we went back inside to swap with Wendy and Trent. They were siblings from Canada, unfortunately they moved to Winseka after losing both their parents. Both attending Winseka high with Kevin, they were good kids though.
"Uhm Mason could you wipe down the serving counter tops before you get back to the booths?", I looked up from tying my half apron as I entered the kitchen, it was Wendy, she was on her way out.
"Sure thing"
I got a dishcloth and the surface detergent then left the kitchen. When I got to the serving counter I saw Kev speaking to the new girl Izumi... I think. Knowing him he was already hitting on her. I wiped the counter to the right of Kevin so I could hear whether or not she'd be like every other girl in Winseka and swoon at his words.
"Wow, you know, I did not want to assume that you were a douche just because you looked like one but you just had to go and prove me right, huh?". Kevin was at a loss for words, he had one reaction to rejection... shock. Before I knew it I was laughing. Kevin's head quickly jerked from Izumi on his left to me on his right. "Uh-hum", I quickly covered it up with a cough. "Dude, shut up", Kevin threw a quick glare my way. He turned back to the girl, "Is your name as beautiful as your-", he was quickly cut off when the girl looked at me and said "Oh it's you..... uhm... "

I looked at her with a raised eyebrow and my arms crossed over my chest as she struggled to remember my name. "What did Uncle Jerry call you?", she seemed so frustrated, it was adorable. "Mason!" I heard Elaine call my name from the Kitchen. Izumi's face  filled with realization, "I'll catch you later....Izumi", I greeted and left to the kitchen.

.......

Izumi

He left so suddenly, I was frozen by the fact that he remembered my name and I still do not know whether or not I can work here. "So, Izumi... huh? I'm Kevin by the way". Agh, I forgot all about Casanova next to me, he spoke with Mason in a very familiar way. "Hey uhm, it was great to meet you but I gotta get back to my dad." I decided to keep any other snarky remarks to myself, I doubt having bad blood on the first day in this town would be a good start for our future here. Just as I got up my dad approached me, seems like him and uncle Jerry already took care of the bill.

"Izumi, we gotta get going, uncle Jerry still wants to show us where we'll be staying before he heads back to the station." Dad was now standing at the back of me waiting for uncle Jerry to catch up, he got caught in conversation with another customer. "Kevin, where's that breakfast?", I heard a voice from the door of the diner. Kevin got up and turned around to face the door with me and dad as the person approached us. It was a man, he seems to be a bit older than dad. He was wearing a white shirt, black slacks and what seemed to be an expensive watch just like Kevin's. He had a complexion like Kevin and uncle Jerry with green eyes to match Kevin's. Could they be related? His father maybe?

"Oh, who are these new faces?", he looked at me and dad, inspecting us like we had our identities written on our clothes. "Dad, this is Izumi and her father......?", Kevin drifted off while dad extended his hand to Kevin's dad, hah I was right. "Benjamin Phillips, but you can call me Ben." Just then uncle Jerry joined us, "Oh Ben I see you've met the Mayor."

Mayor? Of course Kevin's dad had to be the mayor, boy am I glad I played nice with him. "You're the mayor?", dad was just as surprised as I was. "Yes, Carter Sylver is the name, so on behalf of the rest of Winseka I'd like to officially welcome you and I'm sure it'll feel like home in no time." His words sounded rehearsed and almost brochure-like. "Izumi was it? You should have Kevin give you a tour and maybe he could introduce you to a few of his friends, hm?", I don't know what it was but I felt like I couldn't say no. "I might just take him up on that but maybe another day, the drive was kinda long and I'm exhausted, I'm sure my dad is too," my reply made Kevin smirk with satisfaction, he probably thinks I'm just dying to go on a tour with him. We said our goodbyes and left the diner.
So far every person I've met knew every other person I've met, this really is a small town.
