Earlier that same day after the questioning, Saul waited in the lobby of the station as he waited to know if Sara or someone else from the group will be coming to pick him up from the station. He could walk back on his own, but he worries if he does, he’ll attract unwanted attention from the civilians for beating up Renaldo. However, right before he could get an official answer a guard approached him.
“Young man, the Sanstia family carriage is here to pick you up.” The guard said.
“Really?” Saul asked.
He gets up from the bench as the guards escort him outside of the front gate. And he when reached the front entrance, he was questioned about what he was looking at. The carriage was very bright pink, and it indeed has the Sanstia family crest on it but it was rather… golden.
“… oh no”
Before Saul had a chance to react, the carriage doors burst open as a small child girl came out in a cheerful smile. A girl he’s hasn’t seen in a while but he’s all too familiar with her already.
“Hello there Saul! Sweet little Kimber Kandy has come to pick you! Consider yourself lucky that a lady such as I has the gratitude of picking you up on my cousin’s behave. MWAHAHAHAHA!!” Kimberly expresses herself as she laughs.
“…… I’m walking." Saul said as he begins to walk away until he was wrapped around by a whip.
“We have no time to waste we must make haste!” Kimberly said as she yanks Saul into the carriage.
The carriage then speeds out of the station as the guard questions what the hell did, he witness? A kidnapping or something else? He didn’t know what to say exactly except go back in and pretend not to witness what he saw. Meanwhile, Saul was wiggling around the carriage as he finally breaks free from Kimberly’s grasp.
“Was that even necessary!?” Saul yells.
“Well, I have a schedule to keep. I have to do my annual shopping before the day is over otherwise there will be no more cute pink clothing for me to buy.” Kimberly implies.
Saul is starting to wonder if she really bringing him back to the manor or did she kidnapped him just to be his carrier man for her shopping. But it’s hard to say since the carriage is moving and he didn’t exactly have the time to recognize the streets of the south to know where he’s going.
“You may relax now my dear. For you are safe in the safety of my humble personal carriage.” Kimberly exclaimed.
Saul takes a minute to look around in the carriage as he sees the carriage was decorated in different shades of pink with cute animal printing on the seats and even pillows of cute animals as well. And he thought Kimberly was insane enough with the pink motif but the animal prints are just crazy on their own.
“Seems you have time to decorate your carriages as well.” Saul said.
“But of course, every noble in the south has their own personal carriage. Telling a lady that she can’t have her own carriage and to not decorate it is madness on its merits! How can I not resist?!” Kimberly yells.
Its reasons like this on why he’s glad he’s not around Kimberly as often as he could. However, as Kimberly continues to rattle on her personal merits and Saul tries so hard to tune her out, Kimberly couldn’t help but notice the attire Saul is wearing. She leans in closer as she notices that he’s even wearing the pin of the Sanstia crest as well.
“My my, promoted now have we?” Kimberly exclaims.
“Hhm what?” Saul asks.
“Your attire silly. Have you finally become fully employed by my cousin already?” Kimberly asks.
“I… guess you can say that.” Saul answered hesitantly.
“Well don’t just keep me in the dark darling tell me all about it! What’s it like so far?!” Kimber yells.
“Well I wouldn’t know exactly, I just started today. Sara thought it is a good idea to serve her as more than just a bodyguard. Though I still don’t know about the suit itself.” Saul said.
“Why you say that?” Kimberly asks.
“Well for a butler attire, it is rather fancy and beyond anything I could possibly afford back home. Hell, I wouldn’t be able to afford this even if it was on sale.” Saul implies.
“Even so, getting an attire from any noble family let alone on your first employment is nothing to write home about. It’s obvious that dear cousin Sara really does care for you as a servant of the household. The same goes for anyone who works under her and her manor. She is not like me or like the other noblemen in the area.” Kimberly mentions.
The mere thought of it made Saul ponder endless questions about being a servant of Sara’s family. The firm yet smooth gloves, the handcrafted tailcoat, even the fine polished shoes. Sara went and beyond of getting him attire that was beyond his affordable range. But, does he even serve such a thing? He barely did anything to deserve it.
“Chin up darling, severing a nobleman, let alone a city lord should be honored for you. I’ve heard so much of your accomplishments lately.” Kimberly said.
“My accomplishments?” Saul asked.
“Yes, was it not you who managed to drive the mercenary band with their tails between their legs?” Kimberly asks.
Saul remembers the battle he had with Desperado. The intense sword clash, trading blow for blow, the burning woods during the fight, but most of all, losing his arms at the end of it. Though he manages to get his arms back they haven’t fully healed up yet. And he was lucky that they didn’t break away again during his brawl with Renaldo. Slowly he clenches his arms close as if he’s scared that the next time something like that would happen again but this time, they’ll never come back.
“I… guess you can say that. But even still, it was no easy battle to win.” Saul hesitantly answers.
“But think of the victory you have gained. You managed not only to make a name for yourself, but you also helped free dozens of imprisoned slaves. That’s quite a feat to behold of. You should be proud of it.” Kimberly said.
“Maybe so. By the way, how do you even know all about this anyway?” Saul asks.
“Oh my cousin told me, but I want to hear the rest from you as well.” Kimberly implies.
“Well, there’s not much to tell.” Saul said.
He goes on to explain the events that did transpire with him and fighting against Desperado and how he and his team manages to win.
“My, that is indeed a crazy experience.” Kimberly exclaims.
“You don’t know the half of it. Saul implies.
“Well, it sounds like you don’t enjoy it at all.” Kimberly said.
“it is an ugly side of the job sure but I have to deal with it.” Sail said.
“if you don’t like it then why don’t you come work for me then?” Kimberly asks.
“So that’s what you’re really after and why you picked me up.” Saul said.
“Maybe it is or maybe it isn’t. But like I said, if you don’t like the job of going out and killing other mercs then why don’t fancy a change of employ with my household? If it’s money you need then I’d be happy to send a generous donation to your family if you’re financially troubled. Or if they need a new home to live in then I can offer them a place to stay in one of the empty houses in the city and have it refurbished to their liking.” Kimberly offers.
The offer is honestly very tempting. He remembers that his family has been facing slight financial trouble ever since the …. “incident” but how is he going to explain to his family that he has received a “donation” from his new job. Hell, he is still not old enough to get a part-time job back home. But then he does it, then their financial problems would be solved. But then flashes of his memories of spending time with Sara and the others flashed before him. If he leaves Sara, does it mean he’s being disloyal to her, the others, and the promise he made to them that he’ll succeed in being a member of The Dark Children of the Night.
“Thanks, but thanks.” Saul spoke up.
“Really? Just like that?” Kimberly asks.
“Sure, the job I work for isn’t pretty, but they also taught me to be loyal as well. Not just to myself, but to those I love as well. And if I can’t do, how can I be honest to those around me if I can’t be honest with myself?” Saul asks.
Kimberly sighs in disappointment as she was hoping Saul would take the offer and she would have a new butler in her manor since her last butter up and quit since their last visit. Suddenly the carriage stops as Kimberly opens the door as she reveals that they’re now in front of Sara’s manor.
“it’s a shame that you didn’t take my offer Saul, I would have loved to have you in my house as a new playmate. I mean butler!” Kimberly reiterated.
“I’ll take my chances and remain loyal with Sara. Though it was nice to see you again Kimberly. Though next time give me a heads up if you’re coming by the manor so I can have the place clean up.” Saul said.
“Very well, I shall take you up in that offer.” Kimberly said.
Saul gets off the carriage as he waves to Kimberly and closes the carriage behind him as it turns around as it makes its way back to the city. However, as soon as the carriage leaves the manor’s grounds, the driver speaks up.
“Do you think he’ll remain loyal to end?” the driver asks.
“it’s hard to say for sure. He’s only human after all.” Kimberly said.
“You noticed it too huh?” the driver asks.
“I’ve noticed it since the day he first came to the manor. Something that you yourself should have been there since it was your mission.” Kimberly said.
“I had other things to do that required my attention. You were still fine even Sara found out what was in those carriages.” The driver said.
“She will catch on eventually you know. She’s a lot smarter than you think she is.” Kimberly implies.
“By the time she does find out, everything will be set into motion. But I was hoping that boy would change sides to you. Guess not all humans are as greedy as they were. But no matter. Call in the rat, it’s time he puts his skills to good use.”
