Black Vortex

Chapter 10

Chapter 10

Oct 31, 2021

Natalie’s mother left shortly after she had finished her lunch. Natalie spent the rest of the day filling out crosswords and sudoku puzzles. For the first time in her stay in hospital, she was able to sleep without the need of painkillers or sleeping pills. When she was asleep, she shortly awakened in what appeared to be a space station, overlooking the Earth and with all the stars in sight. She was clearly allured by what she was seeing, leaning near the station’s windows.
‘Natalie?’ asked a voice. It sounded like Tyrell’s. A man with glowing white eyes wearing a purple robe walked next to her. His features were so flawless he could have easily been mistaken for a boy. Natalie gazed at him, without saying a word. ‘How do you feel, being up in space?’
‘Weird’ she answered ‘I feel happy but… scared, too’ the man was just looking out of the window, not saying a word ‘Who are you, anyway?’ the man turned around to face her, he said:
‘I am a being who has been present in you, and every one of your ancestors since the world began. You could go so far as to call me “God”.’
‘Well… hello “God”. I’m pleased to meet you’ the man walked away from the window.
‘It’s funny’ he began ‘All religions are the same, if you think about it. They are all seeking a greater power. Christianity with God, Judaism with God as well, Islam with Allah, Buddhism with enlightenment, Hinduism with Brahman. Strange, isn’t it?’
‘It’s like really they’re all pursuing the same thing’
‘Indeed. I am that power that radiates within every living creature. I am what they are all seeking’
‘OK, so… I guess I should be grateful’ the man was walking around again.
‘For those who are not religious, some people seek the meaning of life. I am that same power’ Natalie had a morbid look on her face.
‘You’re the meaning of life? I have to say, I’m disappointed’
‘Interesting’ he said ‘There are monks, nuns, priests and priestesses around the world who would see this as the pinnacle of their lives. And yet here you are’
‘Well, what can I say? I’m not a nun’ Natalie yawned ‘What’s the point of this, anyway? This is all a dream, right?’ the man just gazed at her.
‘Yes’ she then gasped.
‘Oh wait! You are me, right?!’ the man nodded, and started to smile.
‘I’m glad you have realised that. I am no different from the past creatures you have encountered’
‘I see’ there was a brief period of silence ‘Wait a minute, does this mean I’ve been controlling other people? Other animals?’
‘You have’
‘What, really?!’
‘Yes’
‘But… that’s impossible!’
‘How?’
‘Because… there’s no evidence of it! It’s all based on science!’
‘Oh Natalie…’ the man was smiling at her ‘Science is limited to what mere humans can perceive and understand. Science has to be updated again and again, because there have been many instances where things humans thought were true had been proven wrong. It goes as far back as when they thought the Earth was flat’
‘Well, that makes sense’
‘Did you know that flight and travelling at the speed of sound were seen to be impossible many years ago? Did you know that splitting the atom was thought to be impossible before someone did just that? Did you that there are people who were told they were going to die who proved their doctors wrong? Things that are “impossible” are only so because humans see them as such’
‘Right’ the man walked back up to the window.
‘Take a look at all this, Natalie’ Natalie also walked up the window. ‘There are a hundred billion stars in the Milky Way alone, and there is estimated to be one septillion stars in the entire universe’ Natalie looked confused.
‘How many is that?’
‘Imagine the number “one” with twenty four zeroes after at’
‘Geeez, that’s a lot’ the two were silent again.
‘With all this in mind I want you to be thinking this: how can someone possibly know everything? How is it possible for science to cover every single one of these stars? They are even saying that there are other universes out there, so really the possibilities of this world we are in are endless’ Natalie sighed.
‘I guess so’
‘So with that being said, how is what I’m saying about you controlling other creatures impossible?’ Natalia shrugged.
‘I… suppose it’s not. I suppose in that case the afterlife isn’t impossible either’
‘No, in a way you are experiencing it right now’
‘Wait, you mean I’m… dead?’ Natalie gasped, stepping away from the man.
‘Your body at the moment is in a vegetative state. Until this is reversed, yes, you are, in essence, dead’ Natalie looked aghast. ‘Allow me to show you something’ the outside of the space station changed, it was now showing a galaxy with a spiral shape. ‘This is your galaxy, the Milky Way. Have you ever wondering what that instance in the centre is?’
‘You mean in the middle of the spiral?’
‘Yes. There are various theories to what it is. Some say it’s a supermassive black hole, while others say it’s a cluster of dark matter. Whatever it is, it is consuming the Milky Way. There is always a possibility that it will no longer exist’
‘OK, I kind of gathered that’
‘It’s the same with all of us. Death is inevitable, as is ageing and illness. But I want you to think of this: what happens to the stars once they are consumed by the black hole?’ Natalie didn’t answer. ‘They are destroyed. They are no longer stars. But they are not completely removed from existence’ Natalie was still silent ‘What I am saying is that when you die, you will no longer be a human, but your form will change. You’ll still exist one way or another. Even if you do not believe in the afterlife, you decomposing body will help grow new plants in the soil, allowing life to continue’
‘I see. I once heard that nothing is ever created or destroyed, it just changes’
‘Exactly’ there was a long period of silence between the two. ‘So, are you ready to return to your present world?’ Natalie shrugged.
‘As ready as I will ever be, I guess’ she sighed once again ‘I don’t know, when you put everything like this, life itself just seems pointless’
‘It is not. No living thing will be alive otherwise’ Natalie nodded upon hearing that ‘There are many joys to be had when you are alive, you’ll find them if you live your life to the fullest’
‘OK’ a light was shining in front of her, the man then chanted:
‘Infinite wonders. Endless possibilities. Thus is the meaning of life’
Natalie woke back up on her hospital bed. It was around seven o’clock in the morning, as confirmed by her looking at her phone. She appeared to be a bit disorientated, though all of a sudden she had noticed something out of the window: it was just a plain sight: the distortion had gone. She sprung out of her bed and gazed out of the window; it was just a clear sight, there was no view of the world falling apart, or anything of the sort. She then had a bright looking smile on her face, gazing at the sight for quite a long time.

Fresh out of leaving a tempestuous relationship and a dead end retail job, Natalie has been living a rough life as of late. She's constantly tired, miserable, and stressed to the moon and back. Such was an everyday occurrence until one day she looked out of the window seeing the world falling apart, as if it were consumed by a black hole. Accepting that it was just an illusion, she went outside and fell into the hole, waking up meeting a creature who claimed to be her inner subconsciousness.
