We ended up in the spacious galley the following day. Looks were shared while Leo cooked breakfast. Pancakes were his specialty, and Troller was in heaven again.

I leaned over to whisper to him. “You know, if bread was a guy, I’d be jealous.”

“Lucky for me, it’s not,” he whispered back. “Leo, these are divine. Does Royce know how to make these?”

“I taught him when he was a boy, you remember, Royce?” Leo gave me a big smile as he flipped another pancake.

“I remember. I also remember exploding blueberries and Dad coming into the room thinking someone had shot us.”

“Oh bloody hell, I remember that,” Ben laughed. “That was such a frightful mess to clean up.”

“The blueberries were frozen. We weren’t sure what happened, but we’d put a bunch in one pancake, and it sprayed batter and blueberry bits all over us. Dad came into the kitchen to find Pop and me standing next to the stove, completely covered. He nearly freaked out until Pop stopped him and explained what happened.”

“That sounds a bit traumatic. I’m surprised you still like pancakes,” Troller said.

“I do, but not ones with blueberries,” I laughed a little, and everyone was grinning. We had replicated bacon, eggs, fruit, cheese, and more. There was enough food to last us through until lunch, which was probably the plan. 

A bit later, we all changed and jumped into the water to enjoy the nice weather. Troller almost didn’t wear trunks until I explained that while they might not care, they were my parents, and I didn’t want to embarrass them if they did. 

Troller acquiesced, and we spent the morning doing races along the length of the Guardian. Eventually, Leo, Ben, and I ended up on the swimming deck watching Troller dive and surface over and over again. By mid-afternoon, Troller swam to me and put his head in my lap with the rest of him still in the water while my parents and I were drinking beer and enjoying the sun. 

I smoothed back his red hair and played with his braid. He looked at my parents, then me. I caught on pretty quick. “Do you want to change?” 

Troller looked up and nodded. I looked over at my parents. “Would it freak you out if Troller changed?” I asked them because I hoped it wouldn’t. I wanted Troller to be comfortable. 

“There’s a lot of fish. I could catch dinner,” Troller offered.

“No need for that. We have plenty of food. And you’re our guest, Troller,” Leo said. “Please, feel free to be yourself.” Leo smiled, but it was a bit sad too. If anyone understood, it would be him and Ben. 

Ben nodded. “Come on, Leo, let’s grab a few more beers so Troller has some privacy.”

I smiled then, and so did Troller. He quickly stripped out of his trunks and handed them to me. When my parents came back and took a seat on the swim deck, Troller surfaced again.

They put down their beers and looked between us. “Hi, Troller,” Leo said. “Are you more comfortable?”

The high, pleased trill Troller gave in response had us all laughing. I explained. “His vocal cords are different with gills, so he makes vocalizations in this form.”

Troller acknowledged what I’d said with what seemed like an affirmative whistle.

“That’s pretty amazing,” Ben said as he put his hand on Leo’s knee. “You both seem pretty happy. I know I’ve said that before, but seeing the both of you together makes your father and me pretty happy too. We were kind of worried about you for a little while.”

“I know.” I watched as Troller dove under the water. “It’s the first time that I feel like it means something. No one’s ever made me feel like this before. No one’s ever meant more to me than him. Well, except you two.” I turned to look at them, and they had soft eyes for each other and me. “Don’t you two start crying, dammit. You old softies.” That did it, and we were all laughing through our happy tears. 

Troller was gone for a bit, but I could tell he had something in his hands when he came back. He swam up to my parents and motioned for them to hold out their palms. When they did, Troller placed a pearl in each one. The pearls weren’t perfect, but they were big. 

“Did you find oysters?” I asked.

He nodded and grinned. He swam over to me, picked my mask and snorkel off the swim deck, and tossed it to me. I looked at my parents. “Apparently, we’re going oyster diving.” They laughed as I jumped back in the water. 

“Thank you, Troller,” Leo said. “These are amazing!”

“Yeah, thank you,” Ben said. “You two have fun. We’ll see you when you get back.”

I put on the mask and snorkel, and Troller took my hand. We dove under, and he led me along the bottom until my lungs burned for want of air. I pulled at Troller’s hand, he looked back, and I pointed up. Instead of letting me grab a breath, he pulled me closer and wrapped his hands around my face. I tried not to struggle as he pulled my snorkel out of my mouth and sealed his lips over mine. He blew a breath into my mouth, and I gasped with need. 

I clutched him and tried to pull away at the same time. Fighting instincts wasn’t fun. We hadn’t done this before, and Troller hadn’t warned me. He probably thought I could handle it. We went back to the surface, and I pulled my mask down around my neck. I was more enamored with Troller than ever as we floated together.

“That was amazing, Troller. I didn’t know we could do that.”

He nodded. He gave a soft looping trill which I had no idea what it meant, but I gave him another kiss and smiled at him as we tread water. My parents were watching some kind of sports as Troller and I got out of the water. He’d changed back while I grabbed a towel for him so he didn’t have to get dressed again. We spent the rest of the day watching movies with my parents and eating whatever food they had brought.

Leo asked about the oysters, and I told him we didn’t have any luck finding more. He looked between the two of us and nodded but didn’t ask again. I kissed Troller’s blushing cheek and smiled. It was a good day. I wanted it to last forever.
