ZELLA’S POV :
“I am sure you have many questions, Zella.” Said Mr Delphi.
“Firstly, I and Phoebe are not your enemies. We have been trapped here just like you. Unable to escape. We have lost track of time since our bodies don't age here.”
“I see. So, we won’t be able to leave this place?” I asked.
“We are the only ones who have awoken in this place so we have some hope. You might not have noticed but we aren’t alone here.”
I turned around and as if a veil had been lifted from front of my eyes I could see various people lying in the golden sand, sleeping peacefully undisturbed by the sunlight falling on their faces.
People of all ages were wearing different clothes and some even had suspicious wing-like structures, or a very small build, or pointy nose and teeth. Some had fins and others looked perfectly human.
I should feel scared. Or at least creeped out. But instead, I feel at ease. As if, I have finally found my place. The place where I belong.
But… why am I here? And why only me and not Grey?
“Dad says that we are stuck here because we have had our memories altered and were confronted about it,” Phoebe said from behind her father.
“You’re right, Phoebe. Aw, my daughter is so smart- Ahem. Anyways, it is just my assumption that the people who are awake have regained their memories,” Mr Delphi said.
“Phoebe and I have been awake for a long time. Maybe a month, maybe a year. I can’t tell. Also, I am not sure but we may have already gained our memory but since only our soul enters oblivion, we have no way of accessing the hidden memory. In a nutshell, we must return to our bodies to find out what we have forgotten.”
Wait… does that mean I have regained my memory too? According to Mr Delphi’s hypothesis, I have awoken because I have regained my memory right? And who was the one who altered my memories?
Dan and Irine seemed to be the most plausible answer since they were the ones who kidnapped me.
I need to get out of here.
I need to wake up.
I need to find Irine and Dan and confront them.
I need to find out who my biological parents are.
I need to- huh?
I looked down at the small figure hugging me. It was Phoebe.
“Ph-Phoebe? What’s wrong?” I asked flustered.
“Don’t be sad,” Phebe replied in a muffled voice holding on to my waist.
Oh. Right. She can read minds. She must be worried. After all, she couldn’t be older than six years old.
How tough it must have been. Being forced to hear everyone’s thoughts without wanting to. How noisy. How frustrating. And how scary it must have been being trapped here without any idea about the time of the outside world.
I had been here for barely a few hours and I was already on edge.
I knelt and hugged Phoebe. Her small hands comforted me when it should have been the other way around.
“You don't be said either, Phoebe,” I said, patting her head.
Phoebe flinched and hugged me tighter. Mr Delphi just stood at some distance with a pained expression.
Just then I heard something crack.
It was the jewel on the ring. I fumbled around my waist to look for my dagger which was not present. After all, my physical body was still somewhere in that white tunnel… with Grey.
CRACK.
I held Phoebe tightly and nodded towards Mr Delphi who had run towards us to shield us from whatever was coming.
CRACK.
I winced as my index finger started to heat up. As I turned to look at what was the cause I saw the jewel on the ring start to shine.
CRACK.
Its white light blinded us all and as I shielded my eyes, my head started to hurt.
Numerous unknown voices rang in my ears all at once.
“I’m sorry my dear. You must run.”
“Please forgive me.”
“Forgive me. Forgive me. Forgive me. Forgive me.”
“Jewelled eyes?”
“She is indeed the Child of Destiny.”
“DIE. DIE. DIE. DIE. DIE.”
“I love you, my brother.”
“Child of Destiny.”
“Let’s play hide and seek, dear.”
CRACK.
The voices began to overlap each other and it was hard to make out what everyone was saying.
“Oh! Look at you. You like magic don’t you?”
CRACK.
My eyes snapped open.
Stop whining Zella. You have work to do.
I must protect Phoebe.
“What’s going on, Mr Delphi?” I asked over the roaring wind.
“I have no idea, Zella. But… whatever it is, we must survive.”
CRACK. CRACK. CRACK.
The last thing I saw before the white light blinded me was Phoebe mouthing something.
I squinted trying to make out what she was saying.
“Thank you… sister.”
SHATTER.
I felt Phoebe slip away from my grasp as our surroundings started to shatter, like glass. Into tiny crystal like peices. Shining, and reflecting the light of the sun.
It was eerily beautiful.
And then darkness engulfed us.
