Moonchild, I am okay.

Chapter Five (3)

Chapter Five (3)

Nov 15, 2021

And like that the weekend passed by just as fast as the previous days in university. Keb spent most of his time with One. He was especially thankful for him being a part of his life in those two days. Keb knew he wouldn’t have gotten through it without his friend’s presence. Keb didn’t talk to One about what he felt and One didn’t ask even once why his friend didn’t want to go home. Without hesitation, without knowing anything, he let Keb stay at his apartment for the night, lend him clothes and everything else Keb needed during those two days. One helped his friend through loneliness caused by something neither of them knew nor could explain.

Keb felt a lot better when he went back to university on Monday morning for his first class of this week. He had recovered and recharged, could pay enough attention in the morning class most students usually skipped because it was too early in the morning. Keb didn’t think of Moon anymore, had gotten him out of his mind. Until the moment he saw him again.

Usually, the first break on Monday was the same every week. All four of them, One, Ford, Keb, and Khem, had early morning classes on Monday so they usually spent this first break eating breakfast or trying to not fall asleep again. It had been like this for the past weeks ever since the new semester had started. But things were a lot different today.

“Who is One talking to?” Ford asked his two friends sitting at a table outside of the cafeteria while he put the breakfast he had just bought for Khem and himself on the table. One, the eldest of their group, was standing far from their table and was talking to a person who had his back turned to them.

“Moon, the new student,” Khem answered looking at the food Ford had bought for him. “Did you get any ketchup?” Ford pointed at a little red package in the corner of the tray. Ford sat down next to Khem, then looked at Keb who was sitting on the seat opposite of him.

“You okay?” Ford asked Keb, but he didn’t get an answer. Keb supported his head with his hand and looked at One and Moon. It wasn’t clear if he tried to understand what they were talking about or if he was just lost in his thoughts. No matter what, he didn’t concentrate enough on his two other friends to notice one of them was talking to him.

“You could literally curse at him right now and he wouldn’t react,” Khem told Ford and grabbed one of the spoons Ford had brought along. “I don’t know what is wrong, but he has been like this ever since they started their conversation.”

“Did you introduce Moon to One as well?” Ford asked and also turned to glance at One and Moon before his eyes fixed back on the friend sitting beside him. “They look really close.”

“You haven’t introduced them either?” Khem asked in surprise. He thought Ford and One had met Moon someday last week and Ford had introduced them to one another. There wasn’t another way Khem could think of how One and Moon had met since neither he nor Keb had introduced them to one another, One hadn’t been alone even one break last week, and Keb had spent the entire weekend with him. “How did they meet, then?” Khem asked himself and looked at One and Moon. Now, two of the people at this table stared at the two too far away from Keb and Khem for them to hear what they were talking about.

“Eat your food first,” Ford told his friend noticing that Khem didn’t move anymore. Ford placed the food he had bought for Khem in front of Khem and opened the small package filled with one portion of ketchup for him. “You can find out about them another time.” Because Khem still didn’t move an inch, Ford just sighed and turned away from him again. Instead, he looked at the one sitting opposite of him who still hadn’t moved, either. “I can’t believe I’m the only sane one here. Don’t come to me and complain about your headaches later on or I will just-” Ford raised his hand and pretended to hurt Keb with the spoon in his hand, but Keb didn’t flinch at all. “I’m happy to spend this break with you, too, my friends. Oh, how lucky I am to have such great friends like you.”
