Lin and Tenzin met up at Air Temple Island. She was meant to ask him something about the Avatar’s incident quite long ago. The kidnap, and maybe the false ambush in Northern Watertribe before that too. But before she could ask, they noticed smoke was coming from the heart of the city, and she knew that questions had to have waited.
Oogi flew on the sky and carried both of them to the city. Lin realised Amon's army was attacking the police department. A lot of citizens also joined in, perhaps to free their family and friends out of Tarrlok's nonsensical arrest.
“Drop me down. Korra must still be inside.” Lin said.
Tenzin glanced over his shoulder, keeping the rein firm, “You don’t have your bending anymore.”
“It doesn't make me weak and useless.” she snapped, but as she met his worried eyes, her anger faded a little. “There are metalbender officers down there, and it seems like no one is giving them any directions. If I can stop the Equalists from the outside, we can put a stop to this meaningless fight.” She explained.
“It’s still dangerous.”
Her patience was running low. “Said whatever you feel like, but after you're done whining, lower the bison.”
“Good luck.” Tenzin sighed, "I'll try to see if I can call the backup."
Oogi made a couple of circles around the building and dove down to the clearing. Naga immediately ran toward Lin as soon as she touched the ground. The poor creature must have been really terrified by all the chaos around her that she was so relieved to see a person that she knew.
Lin climbed on Naga. “Help me stop the rebellion and then we’ll find your owner.”
She patted on the neck of the polar bear dog, not sure how much she understood her words. Naga let out a howl and they ran, gathering as many metalbenders as possible.
“I’ll only say this once so listen up soldiers…!”
Tarrlok fell to the ground. Korra tensed her muscle as he drew one last breath. The formal Water tribe councilman was now laid motionless on the ground. Amon stood silently, watching his brother. His cloak was torn, and his mask was now full of scratches. His skin was still bleeding from the fight. Blood dripped to the water on the ground, dyeing it into a sea of red. Tarrlok was not let Amon have an easy win. She wondered if Amon ever feel bad for what he had done. Had he had any sadness or remorse, she couldn’t tell, nor did Mako let her have time to think about all of this.
“We have to go now!” He hissed into her ears.
They spun around only to find another man was standing behind them, blocking the way.
But Hiroshi didn’t pay any attention to his daughter. He called Amon, and more or less than a second, the masked man appeared behind them like a phantom.
They heard footsteps close behind them. Amon was getting closer. If he catches them, that would be a game over. No one has time to think about where to go. They dove headfirst to the stair, getting higher and higher. The moment Korra realised they had made a mistake, it was already too late. They had run into a dead-end, and now it was too high to get out through the window. Korra could try to Airbend her ways down. After all, she did succeed in climbing up the ceiling when she and Asami tried to escape the jail. But still, it was different from falling freestyle in thirty meters high building. And even if she could be alive after the fall, her friends would still be trapped in here with Amon.
Korra closed her eyes, “I’m sorry.” She said.
She shot a giant blue fireball upward and blew the ceiling down along with rocks and metals scraps. There was a horror look on her friends' faces when they turned back and realised what was going on. They tried to make a run toward Korra, but nothing could beat the speed of falling heavy objects. Dust flew everywhere. There was now a new wall in front of her, separating herself and her friends. And with all the metals mixed in the piles, even Bolin would have a hard time lifting it off.
At least her friends were safe.
Amon was fast. She couldn’t hit him with her fire. And the same with him. She had somehow able to dodge all his attacks. At first, she thought it was the payoff from the Airbending training lessons, but it would be nice if that was the case. Amon was much different from the last time she fought with him in the Pro-bending Arena. More reckless. More… what're the words? Weaker.
Perhaps Tarrlok had caused him more injuries than he wanted to admit. Perhaps his brother’s death did affect him. Or perhaps he was too excited to finally get his hands on the Avatar. She didn’t want to give her enemy too much credit.
She dashed forward for a close attack. With all the scratches from the previous fight with Tarrlok, a blow of fire was enough to break his mask in half. The pieces fell to the ground, but Amon seemed to pay no notice about it. Without a mask, he looked no more different than a simple man who happened to have a long scar across his face.
But something about the scar made her shiver. Something familiar.
“Amon, when was the ever first time that we met?”
Amon laughed again, “I’ll be surprised if you can remember me. You were only an infant when that happened.”
“Are you saying that you knew I’m the Avatar when I was an infant? Wasn’t Katara was the first one to recognise me when I was four years old?”
“There are a lot of things you don’t know, the Avatar. A powerful force that you can’t see, and they’re getting closer. It’s not my business to get in their ways, but since you’ve already lost, I’ll let you know a little secret.” Amon said.
“How kind of you.”
“There is a spirit hunting for you. A dangerous spirit. And they have a comrade who this person is very near to you. I wouldn't trust anyone if I was you. The spirit helped him identify the Avatar and commanded me to take your bending away before anyone knew your presence. What a shame that I didn’t count to the possibility that the Avatar only lost one element.”
Korra narrowed her eyes, “I see. And who is the person that you’re talking about?”
“That is as far as you’re allowed to know. I’m no longer working for him, but I still own him for what he did. I’m doing you a favour, the Avatar. If that spirit gets their hands on you, your fate would be worse than dead.” Amon said, "You seems doesn't surprise by this."
“I only kill people who are getting in my ways.” He replied with a cold stern voice.
Korra walked to the nearest window. The sun would soon settle down. Perfect time for tinting the clouds with soft pink colour. The sky was exceptionally beautiful for such a terrible day.
“His death was necessary for a greater good,” Amon said.
There were a lot of people on the ground. But at such this height, she couldn’t tell who was who. They appeared like dots. She wondered if Naga was among them too.
She turned her back toward the window and faced Amon once again, “You said you want to build the world of benders and nonbender live peacefully by removing people’s bending, but isn’t you’re a bender yourself? How is that a fair game?”
“The world needs a person to guide them,”
“And what makes you think it’s you? All you did was exactly do what caused the rift between benders and non-benders in the first place. You’re using your bending to oppress people who are weaker than you.” Korra rolled her eyes, “Tell me, Amon, did any people that you took away their bending come back and thank you?”
Amon stared blankly at her. She didn’t let him have time to answer.
They both fell out the window and tumbled down the building.
