My cell phone starts ringing, so I rummage around my room trying to figure out where it is following me by the sound. When I finally find it, I pick up the call and Brett speaks to me on the other end of the line.
—Hi, how's it going?
—Hi Brett, good, I just need to get dressed —I'm just a little bit shaky with the truth. It's true that I just need to get dressed and put on some perfume to be ready, but I still don't know what to wear.
—Great, because I'm a little late and I haven't showered yet.
—Come on, you'll be late, as usual —I complain laughing, I think we are one of the few couples where the boy takes longer than the girl to get ready.
—I won't be there at the time we agreed, but I'll be at your place before you finish getting dressed, you're late.
—We'll see...
—Do you want to bet something?
—No, thanks. I'm not going to fall into your traps again —I say and I hear him laugh, because the luck I had at the beginning of the relationship hasn't changed: I still lose all the bets I make against him— See you in a while.
—See you in a while.
—Bye.
Brett hangs up the call so I go back to looking for something I like to wear and, after a few minutes, I have an outfit I don't entirely dislike. A light cream, short sleeved, V-neck, light cream dress with some flowers with my white sneakers.
—I should have bet something —I regret as I get into Brett's car, for as I said, I was done before he arrived.
—You're terrible at this stuff —he says mockingly.
—But I'm a better cook than you, —I counter.
—That's true.
—Where are we going?
—You'll see.
Brett drives out of town and then I guess where we're going, we've been there before.
After a couple more minutes of driving Brett pulls the car up on a flat spot in the woods that overlooks all of Beacon Hills adorned with a beautiful sunset.
—I thought we were going somewhere random.
—A special occasion called for a special place.
We get out of the car and Brett goes to the trunk, from which he pulls out a large towel and some bags of knick-knacks and chips, drinks and some food.
—I see you've thought of everything —I say in surprise as I help him place it on the floor in front of the car.
—I've already told you it's a space occasion. And... before I forget —he says, digging in his pocket— I have something for you.
—Tell me it's not a wedding ring —I joke as I look at the small box.
—Relax, it's not that.
Indeed, it wasn't a ring, but some small pendants, the first one with a heart and the second one with a "XV" charm, since we started dating on the 15th.
—It's beautiful.
Brett helps me put it on, they are different sizes, so the heart is above the charm, which makes them match perfectly well.
—And may I ask why all this?
—The date is to celebrate your acceptance to the college you wanted, and the pendant so you won't forget about me when you're there.
—Brett, this past year you've been in California while I've been in Beacon Hills and I haven't forgotten you, and now, since I've been accepted to San Diego State we'll be even closer, less than 30 minutes away by car.
—I know, but you will meet new people there. Maybe among those people there will be a very nice, funny and handsome guy who will make you forget about me.
—I may meet a lot of nice, handsome guys, but I love you, Brett, and that's not going to change —I assure him as I hug him— I remember Rachel Franket didn't bet on us; when she found out we were together she said we wouldn't last long, we've been together for over two years now and I assure you we still have many more to add up.
Brett smiles before kissing me and I have no doubt that if he had bet me something with Rachel, or with the rest of the people who said that my relationship with Brett was not going to end well, I would have won.
"I am looking for you". A set phrase that Mia often uses with her friends, but that Brett Talbot takes at face value, giving way to a bet between the two
