I don’t know what I hear first. The steady beeps, or the steady drip. All I know is I’m in an uncomfortable bed, laying in a weird angle. Something is itching like fuck on my arm. Something’s pressed onto my chest. Where the fuck am I?
I open my eyes to see light blue curtains around me. Fuck. I recognize those from TV. I’m in a hospital. Mom is gonna fucking kill me. I look over to see machines next to me. One I’m guessing is reading my blood pressure. Another has a bag attached on it that’s slowly dropping some clear liquid in it. What the fuck happened?
I try to sit up but seems like my body isn’t cooperative. But I need to get out of here. I don’t do doctors. Or hospitals. Wouldn’t mind doing a nurse, but not in the way I’m stuck now. I’m still trying to fight my body when the curtain is pulled back. A nurse is looking right at me. Her pink scrubs do look good on her dark skin, but when I look into her eyes she seems almost afraid of me. Or confused. Or both. Why?
“I’ll tell the doctor you’re awake.” And just like that she’s gone.
Fuck.
Fuck.
Fuck.
Alright.
Let’s get out of here.
I look around and see no cameras or anything so I try even more to sit up. Still nothing’s working right. My body is stiff. My arms have no strength to them. I’m stuck. Well fuck.
I hear someone enter the room again. The curtains are pulled back. I now see a middle aged guy, maybe Indian. Dot, not feather. He’s giving me that same weird look that the nurse was giving me.
“What’s up doc?” I ask. God it actually feels good to make that joke. I don’t know why. Maybe cause Bugs Bunny was my favorite growing up. Like how could I be a kid in the nineties and not love Bugs after Space Jam?
“Mr. Bloom, correct?” he asks. Yup he’s Indian. I can tell from the accent.
“Guess you found my wallet. Can I get out of here?”
“We need you to stay.”
“Why am I even here?”
“Do you know what your blood alcohol levels were when you came in last night?”
“I don’t know. Probably high.”
“They were. High enough you are lucky to be alive right now young man.”
“Yeah I’m sure I’m gonna hear the same shit from my mom too. Can I just get my clothes, my bill, and get out of here?”
“Again, we need you to stay.”
“Why?”
“Abnormalities in your blood.”
“Is something wrong?”
“We’re not sure. We’re making tests now so we need you to stay until we’re sure that you’re safe to leave.”
“I feel fine Doc.”
“That’s the drugs talking.”
I looked over at the bag. Fuck. That’s what’s keeping me here. Alright. I know what I gotta do to get out, but I’m sure I need to get that shit out of me first.
“How long am I gonna be here?”
“Until we’re sure you can safely leave.”
“When will that be?”
“I cannot say right now. Just try and relax Mr. Bloom.”
“Look I got classes starting next week. I gotta get back to school. Besides I’m sure my insurance isn’t gonna cover all this.”
“I’m sorry but we cannot allow you to leave right now. You might be a danger to others, or you a danger to yourself.”
“Right now the only danger I see is you.” I glare at the doctor. Not like I can do much more right now. My body still isn’t working right. I need to get that drug off me.
“Please Mr. Bloom. Just calm down.”
Like how the fuck am I gonna calm down? Here’s this fucker saying I can’t leave. He can’t just keep me here, can he?
“Am I under arrest or something?”
“You do have some law troubles, and I’ll have to have to call for that.”
Fuck.
“I need to get out of here.”
“I cannot let you leave. Now please settle down.”
I started to open my mouth to say something. This asshole has no right to do this to me. But before I can say anything the lights flicker and go out. Ever since I can remember I’ve been able to see really well in the dark. So I can clearly see Ice Eyes appear behind the doctor. As I watch she lowers her mouth to his neck for a couple seconds. I can see his eyes turn white. She lets go of his neck, some sort of liquid that I can’t see dripping from her mouth, and speaks in her bell like voice.
“Leave us and forget about all.”
Like a robot, or a zombie, the doctor just turns and leaves without saying anything. I watch Ice Eyes in fear as she wipes her mouth and turns to look at me.
“You’re a lot more trouble than you’re worth. I hate Indian. Tastes too funny, and too spicy.”
I’m just staring at her in shock and fear. It began to dawn on me that she just sucked on the doctor’s blood. Does that mean she’s a vampire? What the fuck? That’s impossible. Vampires aren’t real.
“Let’s get you out of here.”
Ice Eyes walks over to me and starts pulling the wires off me and removes the IV they had in me. That itched like a bitch. Then as I watched she traced something out in the air. The journey rune. I could feel the tightness in my chest as in one second I went from seeing the dark hospital room to us standing in an old, dusty church. The same church she had told me to go to before.
“Why the fuck are you here?”
“Such bad manners. I just saved you, you know.” Again she’s giving me that look of superiority. This bitch really thinks she’s better than me.
“I can handle myself.”
“Clearly. You had everything under control. Be happy I got rid of the blood they had drawn from you first.”
“How did you find me?”
“I have the great pleasure of having to watch over you.” When she said the word pleasure I could hear the sarcasm in her voice. She really pisses me off.
“I’m not a child.”
“You clearly are. Not even children would have been caught like you were. And they certainly wouldn’t have let a human get a hold of their blood.”
This bitch. What makes her so superior over me? Sure I may have messed up and got caught like I did, but what the fuck does it matter if someone drew my blood?
“Did you grab my stuff?”
She openly rolls her eyes before she traces a rune out in the air. Suddenly my clothes, wallet, and keys fall to the ground. I quickly grab them and begin to trace the journey rune out on them. I smile at her as I feel the tightness in my chest. Suddenly I’m standing in my dorm room. Luckily no one was there. Take that bitch.
“I see you’ve been learning and practicing.”
Fuck.
I turn around to see her leaned up against the wall smirking at me. She doesn’t even look surprised. Maybe bored or amused at me.
“Are you stalking me?”
“I told you. I have been instructed to keep an eye on you. You’re clearly a threat to our secrecy.”
“I would have been fine if you never showed up.”
“Is that what you think after that fire you started?”
“What fire?”
“Your library. Who do you think started it?”
Wait I started that fire? How? Why? I was just doing homework in the library. That’s when it dawned on me. I was writing out runes. And the first one I had wrote was one for fire. If the runes are what make this weird shit happen then when I wrote the fire one I would have been the one too…
Fuck.
“I see you realize it now. Again even our children know better to use the runes while untrained. That’s why I approached you. So that I could tell you what you are. That way you can learn to be more careful. But you’re too stubborn and blockheaded to realize what’s right in front of you. You act just like a human.”
“Maybe because I am human.”
“No you are not. You might be tainted with their blood, but you are not.”
Fuck this bitch.
“Get out.”
“Not until you realize what you are.”
“Get the fuck out. You’re unwelcome here. And if I ever see you again I will call the cops.”
Her eyes widened when I said that she was unwelcome. I could see her trembling as it was like her body unwillingly began to back up.
“Don’t do this.”
“Leave.”
She backed up to the door. As I watched she seemed to meld around it before she was gone. What the fuck? I watched the door as I slowly sat down. Why did she leave like that? She was so unwilling before. Did I like stumble upon the magic words to get her out?
Okay. So going off the thought that she was a vampire, a thought I couldn’t help but to shudder at, what would that mean? Think. Well vampires can’t enter a place unless they’re invited in, I think. But she was easily able to enter before. Maybe it was when I said she was unwelcome. Like I took away her invite. That has to be it. Well with that knowledge I can deal with her again if I see her.
