That night was arriving sooner than either of the two expected, it was like the rest of the morning and the afternoon were blurred out so they couldn't see the fine print. Lyla was cleaning as she would when she got bored, why would she opt to do house chores? No one really knows, she just thinks its fun. But it's mostly an excuse to listen to music.
Jenna was waiting in the elevator for the doors to open on the floor of her best friend's apartment. There wasn't anyone there with her but it still felt terrible. Seeing her best friend after so many years is a bit nerve racking. If you think about it, you have the overarching fear of not knowing if you two... click anymore.
But she won't let that get to her, she should be happy that they're back together again, even if there are still those qualities of the other that makes Jenna want to melt into a puddle. Then somehow a song bumps itself into her head, it was Little Mrs Perfect, a song she had sent to the other all those years ago, shielding her confusion and feelings from the other in the form of melody and lyrics, dripping with confusion, sadness, and jealousy.
The ding of the elevator kicks her out of her thoughts and clears her vision to see that the doors have opened. The girl steps out into the musty smelling floor and looks down at her phone then back to all the doors, trying to find the girl's apartment. It's number was 620 from what Lyla has told her over text.
Her hand was brought up to the door and she tapped it twice when she had encountered the fateful door. Some type of song that was playing finally stops and the sound of footsteps scares her a little more.
"Oh hey." It was like the girl had ran a marathon, but it might've been from something else, her hair was in a low ponytail, a piece of hair disconnected from the rest, her face almost a beet red, must've either been highly embarrassed or been working around the house.
"You look like a mess."
"Jesus, I cleaned the house and I didn't even dare to prepare myself, I'm sorry."
"No no it's fine just..." she swipes away one of the stray pieces of hair that covered her face, moving it to go behind her ear.
"You wanna come in?"
"Sure." Lyla backs away from the door, allowing the other to come inside, packing the last of her cleaning supplies she left in the kitchen up.
"Sorry it's such a mess, I got a little sidetracked."
"It's fine, I was a little lost too."
"Mm, well at least you came over and I didn't do all this cleaning for nothing... Jen, give me a second, I needa call someone." The girl nods and goes over to sit on the couch, her dog was there curled up and sleeping, another dog sleeping within it's fur. It was quiet while the other was gone, only hearing small bits of her conversation with what seems to be her bunk-mate.
"Ight, I'll clean up the rest of the house and you'll be back on the second day I'm gone right? The twenty fourth." "Uhm, take care." After what seems to be a drop of something she comes back, her hair slightly swaying back and forth behind her.
"If you don't mind me asking, who were you talking with?"
"Oh, Victoria's going to come up here for a bit until I go to Columbus to do shows, she'll meet me there and Lizzy will possibly be there? I have no idea- Wait, shit then no one can watch the dogs for me..."
"I'll do it."
"Really?"
"Yep, maybe they can warm up to me if I'm gonna hang out here more."
"Probably. Well you want me to make dinner or have you already eaten?"
"I haven't had anything since lunch so that'd be fine."
"Ight, it'll probably be done in about.. forty five minutes ish?"
"Uhm." And with that the girl returns to the kitchen, bluetooth-ing something to her speaker and quietly humming along. The song was something the other never really knew the name to but remembered some of the lyrics from when the girl would sing it occasionally.
It was something within a month, that's all she could remember. But to take her mind off of it she gets up to look around, the other is such a clean person, there has possibly never been a time that she remembers that the other was messy, well with the exception of mentality. And the tabs on her laptop, but even those were put into groups.
She came to the room that she was in the other night, it seemed to be on her side of the house if that was anything since a huge biromantic flag was put up and many different things lay scattered, guess this is the only messy room in the house, or she hasn't gotten around to clean it.
Then she looks at the walls that seem to have many different photos and paintings on them, that is until she's met with a whiteboard. It had something laid out on it, a story perhaps, this one was of a girl not being accepted by her family but she has a great group of friends to bury the lies and worry until she meets this girl. That's it on the wall.
'Guess she hasn't finished it.'
Her gaze was now set on her gaming set-up, she could only imagine what could never happen, where they live together and she comes in looking for attention just to be against the other's chest as she hears the other's laughs reverberate in her ears. The thought brings both a deep blush and warmth.
Scattering out she ends up back at the couch, Amber was up by this time and came over to sniff her hand, something the dog would always do when it didn't know someone.
"Hi Amber." Jenna coos. Lyla can hear from the kitchen and it puts a smile on her face.
A little while later Lyla has made the dishes of favorite meal that she always made for herself when she was younger, chicken wings.
"Jen, the food's ready."
"You think we can eat over here, Amber seemed to warm up to me a lot." The girl pops her head from where the kitchen was to see the other with her hands slightly up, the dog curled up in her lap.
"Ight, Ambi, Leo." The golden dog props her head up and looks at her owner, immediately going back over to the corner with Leo. Lyla brings the two steaming hot glass containers that were doused in hot sauce. "Sorry if they're a bit spicy, it is hot sauce after all."
"Could you get me some ranch?"
"Yep, Leo, Amp, don't eat my wings ya hear."
Has Jenna ever mentioned that she could possibly absolutely love the girl's accent? It hasn't changed much since grade eight but its still amazing as always. The way the girl just says certain words sounds... well amazing.
The girl grabs the remote and turns on the TV, going to Netflix and searching the other's name up. Three specials pop up and each looks to be three years apart almost. She clicks on one and is immediately brought into the world of the Ohioan theater, it looks absolutely spectacular, it's old timey feel gives it that amazing look along with how well it's been kept.
"Now please welcome, Lyla Gail!" Many in the crowd cheer as she walks onto the stage, smiling with a mic in her hand, waving with her free hand.
"Hey guys! It's, let's just say it's great to be back in Ohio ight, New York was gettin' pretty boring." Laughs and cheers erupt from the audience, bringing a smile to the other's face as she leans a bit closer.
"So yes, I'm still single as can be but have you ever like, I dunno have a crush on a girl for like three years and you confess to her almost every single year to get rejected twice but get a little progress before she's all like "Yeah, I'm a bit to immature for this." Bitch, I've had seven relationships that I lived through at that point and I'm fucking shorter than you." Of course her first story was about them and what happened in grade eight. But it seems to have gotten laughs by how she puts the dark story.
"Yep, her name was Jenna and I love the hell out of her, she was just perfect in my opinion, so Jenna, if you ever see this, I know we're both twenty or at least I am, so are we ready to give this a shot again? I love you." A deep blush goes into the girl's face. This special was filmed two years ago, a few days before Valentine's day.
"Oh my god." Jenna whispers to herself, she's so overwhelmed with this amount of love that the girl is pouring out of her heart on the screen.
"Hey, I got the ra- Oh no, nonono."
"W-what's wrong?"
"Fuck, hold on give me just a- mother fucker that hurts." A loud crack could be heard from the girl's arm, she bit her lip as her shoulder seemed to be put back into place.
"Did your shoulder dislocate again?"
"The thirtieth time now."
"Shouldn't you go to the doctor?"
"Should've but won't."
"You should go."
"Nah, I've learned how to write and do more things with my left so I'll be fine. Anyway, here's the ranch you asked for."
"Thanks." She takes the bottle and pours a bit of it in a corner of the container, shutting it and putting it on the coffee table.
"So you're watching my special from last year. I said some pretty stupid shit in my opinion."
"No, I think you're funny, hell, hilarious even, people say stupid shit all the time."
"True, but I think I can remember the terror that was Ohio's winter, no snow, just frigid cold." The girl chuckles as she takes the first bite of her wings.
The rest of the night they spend watching Lyla's specials, getting the secret inside scoop about them from the girl herself before the night is over with Jenna going home at almost twelve in the morning.
"I'll talk to you when I'm in Cincinnati alright."
"Alright."
