David
They are totally crazy. Michael has done nothing but help us. He’s taking us back to our homes. I just can’t bring myself to believe what they’re saying.
Jacob
That actually makes sense. After all these years, why would he just send us back home? If they’re telling the truth, they’ll need some help.
Martha
The way they told us, I could tell they were telling the truth. They were in pain. I also think there is something they aren’t telling us. There was a point they hesitated and I know they decided against telling us. The truth will come to light eventually.
Shirley
I don’t know what to believe anymore. They could be lying, but I doubt it. We should help them.
Taylor
That…makes sense, actually. I feel better knowing that Emily is not part of this.
Jamie
We told them everything. Well, almost everything. We never mentioned that we were dating, but they will catch on eventually.
“Please, we will need help if we want to take down Michael,” Thomas says.
“Why should we help you?” David asks. I’m not surprised he doesn’t believe us.
“They’re just kids, they can’t do this on their own.” Shirley says for the first time. I guess she’s on our side.
“Why should we even believe you?” This time it’s Jacob questioning us.
“You shouldn’t, but please, I’m pretty sure you don’t want to end up a soldier in an army you don’t want to fight for.”
They give each other a look.
“If we were to help you, what would we get in return?” Jacob asks.
“You would be able to go home.” Thomas says.
“Well, I don’t know about you guys, but Shirley and I are with Thomas and Jamie. Michael has always seemed sketchy, if you ask me. After all these years of training us, why would he just send us home?” Marla asks David.
“I…I don’t know.”
“David, let’s talk privately.” Jacob pulls David to the other side of the truck.
Taylor speaks up, “I’m with you, too. I’ve never liked any of them anyway.”
We all sit down on the seats, me in Thomas’s lap, and talk amongst ourselves. Shirley and Marla have been at The School since they were 15, and now they are both 18. They grew upgrew up at the same foster home Ohio and when they found out Marla had powers, Shirley was taken to become a guard.
“Where are you guys from?” Marla asks.
“I’m from Connecticut,” I tell them, “I’ve always lived there with my family.”
Marla gives me a quizzical look, “Barely any of the kids from The School have a family, especially the ones with powers.”
“I know, everyone was curious about my family when I first arrived.”
“Any brothers or sisters?” Shirley asks.
“Yes, lots. I have eight brothers, four sets of twins. I’m the only one without a twin.”
“That’s a lot of kids,” Marla gives the usual reaction when a person finds out about my brothers. “You’re the only one that’s not a twin?”
“Yup!”
Marla gives Shirley a look, “Have you ever considered that you’re…adopted.”
“What, no! There’s no way, my parents would have told me.”
“Ok, we believe you. What about you Thomas?”
Thomas looks at me, begging me to make an excuse, but I don’t have to. The truck back door swung open. Looks like we’re here.
“Ok, we should have Marla, Shirley, David, Jacob, and Taylor. Who the hell are you two!?” He looks at us and Thomas and I look at each other.
“They’re with us.” David says. At least we know what side he’s on.
“We didn’t hear anything about two more. They look too young to have graduated!”
“That’s why they’re with us,” David whispers in the guy's ear as he stabs him with his electrified hand.
“What are you standing around for? Run!”
