Iola opened her eyes to find herself staring at the cobweb covered ceiling of her little room at the inn.
“No!” She managed to croak through a parched throat. “No, I must... I have to...”
“You have to get away from here.” A shadow fell across her.
“Who?” Iola shivered inwardly. She had herself locked in the room; who could have entered, she almost panicked.
“Yes, you fool.” The shadow loomed in closer. “Get up, get out and flee this forsaken city.”
“Who are you?” Iola scrambled to sit up and frantically looked around the small room. The door was still locked and bolted down.
“I am... you.” The shadow took form, coalescing into a mirror image of Iola.
“Oh!” Iola was taken aback, yet she quickly regained her composure. “I... I’m dreaming this... I must be.”
“Dreams, desires, conscience... call it what you will.” Her image smiled back at her. “I am your inner voice, your rational thinking... and I urge you to leave this place, if you wish to keep on living.”
“But how can I leave?” Iola argued with her grinning reflection. “Dacia’s in trouble, Kadar is dead... and Nesmir, who knows what could happen to him... all because of me.”
“Yes, because of you... of us.” Her reasoning intoned impassively. “Your task is done, Haas Starlight is free, and his spirit resides in you, in us. We must preserve our self, for our people and our home. Leave now, and return to the River Plains. Return home.”
“But I... I can’t just...”
“Yes, you can. Free the manacle of emotion that binds you. We are important to our people; we have been chosen to bring guidance to the River Plains clan.”
“I know that.” Iola wrestled with her own conscience. “But my friends... Dacia is... Kadar died... and... and...”
