Anthropology, Group Projects, & Anxiety

Chapter 3: Brief Introductions

Chapter 3: Brief Introductions

Dec 17, 2021

September 2, 2021

"Okay, everyone, I will give you five minutes to introduce yourselves to classmates you will be working with. Also, I received some emails about group sizes. I intended to have small groups, but there are so many students this semester. Okay, enough of me talking. I will put you in your breakout rooms", Professor Edwards said.

As I was waiting for the Professor to put us in breakout rooms, I remembered how the list showed ten students in two groups. I guess I lucked out, although I am sure some people will drop out, especially since the dropout deadline is approaching. Now that I think about it, this would be the first time, I would see the faces of the others since they always kept their cameras off.

Minerva's Laptop Screen:

Redirecting to Breakout Room Five

Well, here goes nothing…

When I finally connected to the virtual breakout room, I quickly noticed four blank faces and one with a wide smile.

Two minutes go by, and nobody says anything.

The one with a wide smile decided to be the first to break the silence and introduce herself. “Hey, I am Eloise!”

After that, I decided to go next. “Hi, my name is Minerva…”

The others soon followed suit

"Hey, my name is Ramon."

"Hi, my name is Anais."

"Hey, my name is Nova."

"Hey, my name is Masaaki, but you can call me Maki."

"Soo, why don't I make a group chat so we can keep in contact with each other? Can you guys just put your phone numbers in the chat" Ramon said.

After everybody put their phone numbers in the chat and confirmed that they could access the chat, the silence returned. I was about to ask if anybody had any idea about what topic they wanted to do when we were redirected back to the main room.

"Okay, everyone’s class is almost over. I will give you guys some more time next class since not everybody got enough time based on the comments in the chat. After Tuesday, I do not plan on giving you guys any more time during class; I expect you to make time with your groups. Also, remember by September 9, I want a member of each group to email me an outline of your projects. Okay, I will see you all next time", said Professor Edwards.

After the Professor ended the Zoom meeting, I let out a sign started to review the guidelines for the project, and began to think about how my group will divide our assignment. A PowerPoint presentation is not super difficult, but group papers could be tricky since everyone has their own writing style.

With the continuing pandemic, emotions such as stress, fear, and uncertainty have only amplified. Just ask Minerva Ramirez, an introverted fourth-year college student who is returning to in-person classes for the first time since the beginning of the pandemic. Unfortunately, her stress triples when she finds out that she was assigned to a large group for a project worth 35% percent of her grade for one of her courses. Will it be as dreadful as she assumes, or is she in for a surprise?

Warning: Beware this novel will contain mature language and go into mature/serious topics. I will put a warning at the beginning of each mature chapter.
