A large white fluffy expanse awaited Gale when he
returned to the garden. Luckily the wind had not yet disturbed them, but with
the vast majority of dandelions now seeded it was now as good a time as any to
blow them away. It would be risky to wait longer. But there was one problem,
Puffrel was not here like she promised.
She’s probably just busy,
she’ll come. Gale thought
as he tilled a flower bed.
But she didn’t arrive at noon either, nor evening.
She wouldn’t miss this.
There’s no way. Gale thought, cleaning moss off a statue.
Unfortunately it wouldn’t be long now until Gale’s legs took control of
him, so he finally relented, and he pulled his eyes away from the sky, beginning
to make his way to the armory.
“Don’t go anywhere!” He said
turning back to comically threaten the dandelions. He chuckled to himself as he
turned back again.
He was in the middle of patrolling the wheat field that night when something happened. At first, the changes were subtle. The wheat rustled as the wind picked up, blowing outward from the estate. Then there was a rumble and Gale looked above him to see something incredible. Above him was a thick layer of white clouds, as there tended to be most nights, but the clouds right above one of the towers of the estate had turned dark. This was closely followed by the clouds around them turning dark, and then the clouds around them did as well. It kept going, rippling out until even the clouds directly above Gale went dark. The sound of thunder began to rumble in as the ground started to shake and lightning could be seen sparking and jumping within the clouds above. Gale thought maybe he should be worried, but he couldn’t help but be in awe, his eyes glued to the scene.
It was this night that Gale realized something. A spark of inspiration from the events unfolding in front of his eyes.
Suddenly there was a crack in the cloud layer creating
a beam of starlight illuminating the tower as a large mass of shredded leaves
and flowers shot into the air from around the base of the tower. But it didn’t
stop there, it kept spreading.
It was like nothing Gale had ever seen. It was as if giant invisible blades had
pierced the heavens around the tower and then started cleaving their way
outward. But it was like those blades were only affecting the clouds and plants
in their path. Everything else was left untouched.
Gale watched in awe as giant plumes of flowers and leaves shot into the air,
illuminated by the starlight that used to be hidden above the clouds that were
being rend asunder above them.
He watched as the plumes on his side of the estate got closer and closer before
all at once he saw the dandelion field plume in the distance, sending thousands
of the seeds into the air. They began to expand outward like the last dandelion
field he had grown, but this time a good number of them followed the continued
path that was being carved by whatever was causing the plumes of shredded plants.
Perhaps Gale should have been annoyed, the dandelion field was gone, but the
display was almost worth it.
Suddenly the plumes hit the wheat field, and the wheat too began to be cleaved
through. Two of the paths being cleaved were quite close to Gale but on their
current path, weren’t due to hit him. They instead missed him on either side.
He stepped back instinctively as the storm of dandelions and wheat tore past
him, some of it setting alight from his head. The huge plumes of wheat were
sent far into the air around him and cleaved into the forest for a bit behind
him before finally seeming to slow and stop, as did the light earthquakes and
rumbling sky.
Gale looked back and forth in awe, but as spectacular as what took place was,
when the intensity began to fade and signalled the end of whatever this was….
nothing was explained to him.
He looked through the large, long openings torn in the clouds to see the heavens, with its strange sky made of shooting stars you could not see the heads or tails off and then after, he looked at shredded plants falling gently from the sky. Then, he looked at the tower where the cleaving had come from. And finally, he thought about Puffrel, who went missing today. And Gale asked:
“Why?”
Perhaps it was his upbringing that told him not to ask
questions or perhaps it was his belief in enjoying life to the fullest no
matter the hand he was dealt but regardless, Gale now looked at his world with
fresh eyes.
Until now, Gale had never been… Curious.
