Madeleine’s the statue now! I thought to myself as she held out her hands just like the Not-Mom statue’s.
It seemed as if Madeleine’s knee wasn’t hurting anymore, as she stopped rubbing it to stare at her palms. She stuttered, “What did I do? How do I get rid of this? Vin, you study this kind of thing, right?” she looked up at me with her eyes wide open.
I was so amused by what was happening that I didn’t realize it was actually happening. I snapped back to reality and said, “What? Me? Uh, I don’t study. That kind of thing.”
“Yeah, you do!”
“How do you know what I like to study?” I retorted. “Okay, well, since you can hold it yourself, it seems like divine magic, but it couldn’t possibly be. You have…” I trailed off.
Madeleine raised an eyebrow. “You don’t need to sugarcoat it!”
“Why didn’t you tell us it was divine magic earlier?” Axel asked me.
“Sorry, I never thought to mention it. Well, you know now.”
“Even though I’m a Light, there’s still a humming white glow coming out of my hands. I don’t know what to do with it,” Madeleine reminded me.
“I don’t know!” I admitted. “Just, uh, treat it like divine magic. Try healing your knee with it.”
Madeleine slowly set her palms onto the scrape on her knee, but when her hand contacted the skin, she immediately pulled it back and squealed, “That burned me!”
“Maddie!” Axel exclaimed, going to look at the burn on her knee. He pulled out his handkerchief, casted a spell on it with his right hand and placed it on her knee.
“Sorry!” I gritted through my teeth. I could feel my face go red in embarrassment and guilt. “Um, I…” then I remembered something that I read about in a book about divine magic.
“Were you thinking about the divine magic hurting you when you used it?” I asked.
Luckily, Madeleine was too distracted by her pain to give me her death glare before answering, “How am I supposed to know? Actually… yeah, I think so.”
“I think your thoughts will affect how the magic is, uh, used. If you want it to hurt, then it’ll hurt, but if you want to heal, it’ll heal.”
“I didn’t want it to hurt!”
“You just got the power, so you’ll be bad at controlling it, so even if you think about it hurting, it might end up turning into harmful magic.”
“Woah, that’s dangerous. Why didn’t anybody tell us that?” Axel wondered.
“The last person with divine abilities manifested decades ago. It’s super rare, especially if they’re not a pure Night. Well…” I glanced at Madeleine.
“So this was a one-in-infinity chance. I don’t know if I should be happy or scared for my life. Okay,” she huffed, “Happy thoughts only.” Madeleine repeated those three words as she carefully lowered her hands. She closed her eyes, and placed her palms on her knees.
Well, she’s not screaming. That’s something to celebrate.
The glow on her hands seemed to be slowly fading away, along with the sound of the hum. Once the light was completely gone, Madeleine quickly lifted her hands after a few seconds and seemed to be mentally bracing herself before taking a glance at her knee. When she did, she looked away… and then looked at her knee again. Her eyes widened.
“It worked!”
