As the lift slowed at the top floor, I stepped through the walls of rippling light veil as I took a few deep breathes to keep myself calmer, the lift let out in a small room of dark stone flooring and large windows looking out over the city with a huge set of dark wooden doors set opposite of the lift. I walked towards the doors before taking a moment to steel my resolve before I knocked on the door.
The door creaked loudly and slowly as the door opened inwards, I felt…incredible awkward about the slowness of the door opening and the painfully loud creak sound of the wooden door’s opening. I stepped through the door as it closed behind me as I stepped into a large office; dark wood hardwood flooring with huge sections of windows to the sides looking out over the city with the back wall being a rough, dark, cobbled stone centre with a large fireplace set there filled with a crackling fire, everything in the building was extremely futuristic and insane looking, but this room was much darker, much older looking and much more magical looking by the fact it looked like a set from a fantasy movie or something.
“Ah, there you are, Investigator Dandridge” a woman said as she stood up from the desk set in front of the fireplace as I walked over, she offered me her hand which I shook as I sat down on one of the ancient looking armchairs facing the desk. The woman who sat at the desk was…far taller than me with a stern expression and extremely sharp and angular, pointed features, sunken cheeks and these solid yellow eyes with slitted pupils, a huge swirly pair of gold ram horns coiled off her temples as iron grey hair fell to her shoulders around her horns, a long tail of scales in maroons, brown and red coiled around her chair, the tail tipped in a huge red scorpion stinger, scales of the same colour covered her hands and laced up the sides of her neck and about her face and as she walked showed raised heel lizard like feet with huge black talons matching her hands, extremely sharp teeth and a blue-black forked tongue.
“Thank you so much for offering me this position.” I said, she smiled softly with a short nod as she folded her hands on her desk, cracking her knuckles as she moved her chair a bit closer to the desk.
“As I am sure you have been informed, Investigator Dandridge, the job I am offering you is…an addendum to your position at the nonmagical police. I am not asking you to quit that job and become an investigator for my department. I am asking if you would be willing to assist us in the very case your department has given you. We believe that the thief is magical, we have a bit more information towards the case than your department has. You will be getting a bonus to your pay as per my request and I understand that this may be asking a lot…as you will be needing to keep any information you get about the case within Towerblock secret from your work in the nonmagical police.” She explained
“I understand. I know that everything about Towerblock and…everything magical needs to be kept secret.” I said as I started wringing my hands on my lap as I looked towards the top of her desk to avoid looking in her eyes due to the fact that her eyes made me feel a bit…scared due to the fact that her eyes felt like she was looking beyond my appearance and like she was staring into the depths of my soul.
“But I assure you, if you take the position with us here, you will have masses of extra resources that are not within your grasp with your department, we have a lot of magical officers and magical departments that will be able to assist you in any leads you get about the thief.” She added, I nodded softly.
“I understand” I said as I steeled myself enough to look up and meet her eyes.
“Your workload will not be increasing, you will not be forced to stay with us afterwards, but I would like to open the idea of you transferring here after this case if completed or if you wished to transfer sooner. I assure you that the salary that all of my investigators receive is much more so than what you are receiving as an investigator for the nonmagical police. We have much more…intense and strange cases that you may have to work with so the pay is as one could understand higher as the danger is more prevalent.”
“Danger?”
“Everyone has magic here, so…while you probably do not experience shootouts in your average police work, magical police are different as everyone has some experience magic in a combative way so…our magical officers and other members are usually instructed in ways to keep themselves safe and protected in the instance of a criminal firing combative magic in retaliation.”
“But still no firearms?”
“Not to the extent as other countries, but there are certain magical professions where firearms could be crafted but are under extreme scrutiny and we have wards ensuring that if and when someone comes into the possession of a magical firearm of any kind, they are watched within a normal level to ensure they’re not using said firearm to commit crime.” She explained
I sat forward a little as I felt comfortable to ask the questions I really wanted to ask:
“Do I get anything in terms of benefits? As you could guess, my job does give me some, but…there are some things that could be a bit better.” I said, she laughed in response.
“Direct, I like that in an investigator…very well…” she started…
