River sat at the table with Kiyt as Prince Nabu cooked them breakfast.
Three years ago, Prince Nabu barely knew how to use a kitchen. River could not blame him as he had everything done for him since birth. But, Prince Nabu wanted to learn, so River taught him.
There were a lot of downs rather than ups. But after a year, Prince Nabu finally caught on without setting anything on fire. So, here he was, making breakfast for him and their child.
Kiyt happily hummed, giving one of his adorable smiles. "I love daddy cooking!"
"What about me? Do you dislike my cooking?" River gave a fake pout, creating tears in his eyes.
Kiyt instantly shook his head as he stood in his chair, reaching for River. He could only grab his hand without falling off the chair. "I love Papa's cooking too. Daddy barely home. So, I barely eat daddy's cooking."
River flipped their hands, squeezing it as he dropped his pout. His heart felt strained.
He knew Kiyt always wanted Prince Nabu to stay. On certain days, Kiyt would cry, asking when his daddy would come. And each time, River did not know what to say.
Prince Nabu could never stay—their relationship was set to fail since the first time they met.
"I can't wait to try daddy's cooking too." River responded with a strained smile. Kiyt's smile instantly brightened, causing River to sigh slightly. He does not believe in happy endings, but all he could hope for is the safety and life of his son.
Prince Nabu finished cooking, making his way towards them with two bowls. He set the bowls down before walking back to get his bowl and utensils. River moved one bowl in front of Kiyt before pulling the other towards him.
Coming back, Prince Nabu set the utensils towards them before putting his bowl down. Once Kiyt grabbed his fork and spoon, he started eating. River watched him with a laugh, shaking his head. The boy loved eating like someone would take his food.
Sitting down, Prince Nabu looked at River, waiting for him to eat. Feeling Prince Nabu's stare, River glanced at him, "You don't have to keep doing that."
"You are the man of the house." Prince Nabu replied. In royalty and nobility, they always wait for the man of the house to eat first before digging into their food.
"I told you that doesn't matter here." Even Kiyt was happily eating his food without a care in the world.
Prince Nabu shrugged, "It matters to me."
Sighing, River obliged Prince Nabu and ate some of his food. Once River started eating, Prince Nabu finally joined in. River rolled his eyes as Prince Nabu smirked at him.
Kiyt, with stuffed cheeks, watched both his dads while moving his eyes left and right. He internally chuckled, always enjoying their interactions. "Do you want to go outside and play after eating, love?" River asked Kiyt.
Chewing faster before swallowing down his food, Kiyt nodded. "I do. I do."
"Haha, okay."
After they finished eating, they went to the backyard. Since there was a large tree in the back, River built Kiyt a swing for him to play on. Kiyt instantly ran to the swing, trying to put himself on it.
Prince Nabu followed him, picking Kiyt up to help him on. River stayed behind, sitting down on the porch as he watched Prince Nabu swinging Kiyt on the swing. He covered his mouth to hide the smile appearing on his face.
He contradicts himself every time.
River can enjoy the tiny things, even though he tells himself not to. But, he knew that it would never last—especially when he reminds himself who he truly is.
The man finished addressing his wound, but his hand did not falter from his body. Ghost should have stopped the touch—push the man's hand away while silently leaving without a trace. But, the hand made his body feel like he ran through fire and did not want to stop.
"You are Prince Nabu, right?" Ghost asked, mindlessly making small talk instead of admitting that he did not want to leave.
He already knew who the man before him was. He would not be a hidden assassin if he didn't know that basic information.
"I am, but you already knew that, right?" Prince Nabu glanced up at him, not once backing down. There was something in his eyes that pulled Ghost in.
"What did I say about asking questions? You must care little about your life?" Ghost started.
Prince Nabu hummed, finally moving his hand away, making Ghost’s body feel cold. "If I said I didn't, what would you do?"
They deeply looked each other in the eyes, not once glancing away. Ghost did not care for the suicidal response as he pulled his shirt off. "Well, before you decide to die, check if there is anything else on my body."
He turned around, showing his back to Prince Nabu. It is something he should never do, but he wanted to.
Ghost felt the bed dipping as Prince Nabu joined him. A hand, returning the heat to his body, moved down his back. "There are no other wounds," Prince Nabu's voice sounded more profound, "but you already knew that."
He sounded closer than before as lips lightly brushed against the back of his ear. Ghost breathing became uneven as he gripped the sheets in front of him, holding himself back. "What did I say about questions?"
The hand reached his pants, lifting the hem as fingers itched to slip inside them. Lips lightly slid down his ear and towards his neck as a voice whispered, "Remind me better, Ghost."
"River." A voice called, breaking him from his memories. He quickly reached for the loose board, getting ready to pull out the hidden weapon when the smell of Prince Nabu filled his nose. He had forgotten that he was still at home—a safer home.
Ghost fell to his knees, throwing up everything in his stomach. For a couple of weeks, he has been feeling nauseous. "River." An angry voice sounded next to him before a kick hit his side. He rolled over a few feet, holding his side as he held back his reaction.
"Master," Ghost weakly called.
"Do not call me master until you fix what you have done," the man was beyond furious, "I have taught you everything, and this is how you repay me!"
Before he could think of getting up, another kick landed on his face, busting his lip. "Father, please. What did I do?" The word slipped from his lips as tears filled his eyes. It was a secret that no one could know.
After the words left his lips, something sharp poked his neck while drawing blood. "Boy, do not make the same mistake as me." Then the pressure and his master disappeared as a paper landed next to him.
Groaning, Ghost sat up, grabbing the paper as he read the words on it. His fingers trembled before he tore the paper into pieces and burned them. This time, he did not stop the tears from flowing.
"River." This time a hand waved in front of his face, finally causing River to glance up and come out of his thoughts. "There you go," Prince Nabu started, "Kiyt wants you to push him on the swing."
Standing up, River stretched as he hummed. Before River could reach Kiyt, Prince Nabu stopped him by grabbing his arm. "Are you okay?"
River glanced at him, then at Kiyt on the swing waiting for him. He would never be okay since he chose to keep Kiyt and, by extension, Prince Nabu in his life. Secrets on secrets—that is all River knows.
He pulled his arm away from Prince Nabu, "I am fine," and made his way towards Kiyt. He is as fine as he played to be.
