Note: (5/8) of the mass release. I will post the last three chapters tomorrow.
March 27, 1096
Prince Nabu rested his head on the hard wall, closing his eyes as he thought about nothing.
Yesterday, no one said anything to him as they set him in the prison his father had built. He thought the investigator would tell him what everyone was accusing him of, but instead, he walked away with the guards.
But then again, it is time for their annual festive event, so he could see everyone mainly focusing on that.
Sighing, Prince Nabu wondered if he should have ignored River telling him to go back. If he stayed longer at River's home, he pondered how worse his father's mood for him would have become.
God, he wondered if he would ever see his son and River again.
The sound of heels clicking against stone ground caused Prince Nabu to open his eyes. When he did, he saw his eldest sister on the other side. He sighed before closing his eyes once more, not bothering with her smug smile.
"Brother, it is a tragedy to see you behind bars. I hope father will clear his suspicions soon; I know you would do nothing to betray us." His sister's fake concern made him want to hurl.
"What trick have you tried this time, Yeni?" Prince Nabu indifferently asked.
Princess Yeni hummed, "It seems that someone has poisoned mother, and not only that but exposed our guards' positions in Crocia. King Regin was not happy about the discovery. And a person who disappears with every chance he gets, wouldn't he be the perfect traitor?"
"For the firstborn, you still play childish games. I would never betray my people. Even if you get rid of me, you will never take the throne. Father would turn his attention to our fourth sibling instead. A beta would never rule a kingdom." Prince Nabu reminded.
As Princess Yeni clicked her tongue, fury passed across her face, causing her facade to crack. But she glanced away, regaining herself before looking at Prince Nabu again, changing the subject.
"Where do you go, brother? Why would anyone believe someone who slips away for a few days, never telling anyone where they go or what they do? Secrets only drag you down, making you the guilty party. And that is what will lead to your downfall."
Prince Nabu finally opened his eyes again, staring at his sister with zero emotions in them. "And my downfall will never be your rising, sister."
A growl slipped through Princess Yeni's lips before she stomped away, not having anything left to say. Prince Nabu did not care; there was no love lost between them. She has hated him since birth. And her hate grew when he was announced as an alpha.
A male and an alpha—what more could a king ask for?
She could continue to blame him and throw him under every carriage there was; Prince Nabu would never give her the satisfaction of a reaction because he didn't care. The only things that filled his heart and mind were Kiyt and River.
And he will keep them safe—even if it means his people would brand him a traitor.
An hour later, a guard came with a tray of food. They slipped the tray through the small open space in the gate, setting it on the ground. Prince Nabu stood up, walking towards the tray as he grabbed it.
He made his way back to his seat/bed, eating the food given to him.
As he ate, another visitor came—this time, it was his father.
"Son," King Galot started.
Prince Nabu stopped himself from snorting. It is funny when his father calls him 'son' at certain times.
"We have given you everything you wanted; what has swayed your heart so much more than your family and home?"
River and Kiyt were his family and home. He instantly answered in his mind. He would never betray his territory for them; but, he would give everything up for them.
What could royalty give him over River and Kiyt?
"Father, stop speaking as if I had betrayed you and my people in any way. I know there is no proof of me doing so. The only thing you have is me disappearing at random times." Prince Nabu truthfully answered.
"Then, if you have done nothing wrong, tell me where you go." His father instantly answered back.
Secrets, secrets.
Everyone has them, so why have his secrets provoked such dishonesty? No one ever questioned where his father would go every weekend when he would leave his guards behind. But then again, he is a king while Nabu is still a prince.
Prince Nabu shut his mouth unless he used it for eating. He no longer looked at his father, showing that he was reluctant to answer that question.
His father clicked his tongue, reminding Prince Nabu too much of Princess Yeni. Like father, like daughter, huh.
"The longer you stay quiet like this, the more people will think you are a traitor."
"When will the investigator come talk with me?" Prince Nabu asked instead, ignoring his father's words. He did not care what his father said. He knew who he was; they could never guilt him into telling his secrets.
"After the festival," his father replied before glancing away, "I hope that will give you enough time to think about your options." He walked away.
His options? He did not care for them.
He knew his father would not hurt him the way they do traitors, or even the accused. If he wasn't his father's only alpha son, they would have tortured him long ago.
The event lasted for almost a week, so this would be his room for the time being. He sighed once more, hitting the back of his head on the wall. Prince Nabu wondered how his son would react if he didn't return for a while.
Honestly, he pondered more about River.
That man would never give him a clear answer, always ignoring questions that dealt with feelings. It only made Prince Nabu push more and more. He closed his eyes, losing his appetite as he thought once more that he should have stayed with his son.
The rain came down harder as Prince Nabu watched the drops hit against the window. His mind has been like the rain as he thought about the assassin from before. He touched his lips, remembering the sensation of River's lips on them.
It has almost been two months, and he could not forget River at all. Every touch and sound kept repeatedly playing in his dream, making it harder to keep his sheets clean at night.
How could he ever find someone to make him feel the way the beta did? He knew he never will.
As he got lost in his jumbled thoughts, his window opened as a soaked Ghost entered his room. His mask was gone as his wet hair stuck to his face. He shivered from the cold, sniffling as he looked at Prince Nabu.
Ghost seemed to have traveled for two days without stopping.
Prince Nabu quickly moved off his bed, grabbing his warm, thick blanket. He wrapped it around Ghost, not caring that it grew wet and dirty. "What happened?" he asked.
The man's eyes were red as many emotions passed through them, not showing an end to it. There was even a bruise and busted lip present on his face. "Nabu," his voice sounded hoarse like he had been screaming without stopping.
"I'm pregnant."
Prince Nabu felt his world stopping as he did not know what to say; he even forgot how to breathe. All it took was one night for Prince Nabu's life to change forever.
