Acalea: The Goddess of Love

A Royal Conundrum

A Royal Conundrum

Dec 28, 2021

Angelica arrived at Leach Publishing House bearing a slight smile. She went onto her computer, reading her emails before working on editing the novel that she was assigned the previous day. No one else had arrived at her desk as of yet, a somewhat elderley employee stopped by to great her.
‘Hey Angie, how are you doing? You look bright today!’ Angelica stretched her arms.
‘Don’t I always?’
‘Well, you have looked at bit worse for wear as of late. That and I heard you broke up with your boyfriend’
‘Nah, screw him’ she paused for a while ‘People like him aren’t worth giving the time of day’ the woman looked puzzled.
‘I suppose that’s the best way to look at him’ Angelica sighed.
‘I guess I have a lot to learn about the game that is love’ the woman started laughing.
‘It’s not a game I have mastered, let’s put it that way!’ a tall woman with a long, bent nose and glasses walked over to them.
‘Could you get back to work, please?’ she demanded, looking at the two of them. The elderley woman went away and Angelica went back to working on the novel. ‘How is this all coming along?’ Angelica sighed, this time she sounded miserable.
‘Still a long way to go’ she then paused ‘If you don’t mind me saying, this is legitimately one of the worst things I’ve ever read’ the tall woman had a scowl on her face, Angelica looked nervous once she noticed that ‘You can read it for yourself if you like’
‘Oh no, that’s… quite all right. There’ll be a plenty of people dumb enough to buy this anyway. Though this will humiliate Her Majesty somewhat, I suppose’ the tall woman paused for a moment ‘Why would she even write this? I know women like to talk about personal issues a lot, but this seems a bit extreme’ Angelica chuckled.
‘It’s not just that. Whenever I’m reading it I can’t help but think it was written by someone doing an impression of her rather than the Queen herself’
‘She might have got one of her minions to write it’
‘But still…’ Angelica just laughed.
‘Keep up the good work, OK? Lauren should be in soon’
‘OK’ the woman left, where Angelica kept at work on editing the book. Roughly two hours later Lauren came over to talk to her.
‘Angelica, I have some news for you’ she introduced.
‘Oh god’ Angelica muttered
‘We have been having talks with the Queen’s agent and he’s agreed to allow us to have a shorter book, so they’ll all be released as a series. You’ll have far less work to do and the book will be published as soon as possible. Is that good news?’
‘Uhhhh… I guess so?’
‘Well, her agent was quite a stubborn one. They’re all the same, just liars and swindlers. He was no different’ Angelica didn’t say anything. ‘How are you getting along with it, anyway?’
‘I’m about forty thousand words through’ she sighed ‘You wouldn’t believe how many typos are in this thing. I said this to Petunia, by the way, it sounds like it was written by someone doing an impression of her rather than the Queen herself’ Lauren shrugged.
‘It doesn’t bother me. As long as it sells and as long as there are idiots willing to buy it’ Angelica didn’t say anything. Lauren walked away.
‘Figured she would say that’ she muttered. She went back to work on the book until twelve o’clock,  she went into the kitchen for her break. She was eating a salad while at the same time, she was looking at her phone. She had a message from Chelsea which said: “omg i dont know about u but i hate football!”, she smiled, and texted back: “Yeah, I can’t stand it either. Do you mean American football or soccer, by the way?”. She sent the text. Later she texted: “I didn’t mind playing it when I was a little girl, though (soccer, that is)”. Afterwards she looked through her phone, she had no other texts. She later ate her salad and after a while she went back over to her desk.
