Madyline Marie Mortimer was rich. Her family was rich. She was rich. She lived in a mansion powered by solar panels with a heated pool, beautiful art on the walls, and nice cars in the multi car garage. But now Maddie was sitting in the mansion with the solar panels, the pool, the art, and the cars with no one to show all these beautiful things to. The end of the world really put a damper on her social life.
She sighed loudly, causing her mother to look up from her book. “What is it now, Madyline?”
“I’m bored.”
“The end of the world tends to do that. Go swim or read a book. Maybe go to the theater and watch one of the movies. We have many.”
Maddie sighed yet again to underline the point that she was bored and trudged her way down to the theater in the basement. She scrolled through the movies at least five times before finally settling on something to actually watch. She stood while it wound up and started the popcorn machine and got a soda and candy. The candy would be stale and they were running low on the soda syrup, but it would just have to do. She was too bored to care anymore.
She flopped back down in the chair after sitting her snacks in the recliner next to her. She pressed play and the movie began, lights dimming automatically.
