As the small fire was put down, the remaining ashes, from the pages that were burnt in the moment, covered a large portion of the table. As Yu Na cleaned the ashes, she saw one book that remained intact, as the small fire didn’t reach its place. Yu Na slowly grabbed it, blowing the ashes from the cover. Handwritten on the cover was the text: ‘Daily Records' and as she opened the book, on the first page were scribbled words, some of them were erased, some were underlined, but one question written in the middle of the page made Yu Na curious: ‘Who I am?’
‘20… 19… then? What happened? When did I lose the count? Outside, the place is covered in snow. Like my memories, there’s nothing left but emptiness.’ was written on one of the following pages of the book
Then, everything was blank, there wasn’t anything written. Until the last page, everything was blank, except, at the end, where many numbers that didn’t make sense were written.
Yu Na thought that maybe it was his personal diary, that he may have written recently in it, but looking outside, there wasn’t any sign of winter. Looking carefully, she knew that it was early autumn, and there wasn’t any snow. Then what was it? Did that diary belong to someone else?
Many thoughts kept wandering inside her brain, but she knew she had invaded his privacy by entering this room, so she put down the book then left the room. As she closed the door, the light that shined from outside lit up one place of the wall, where it looked like words were carved on the wall, but she didn’t notice it.
Outside, it looked like childrens were playing. She smiled after hearing the children's laugh. For a moment, it felt like she was a piece of puzzle that fit into a frame, but the reality that she needed to face shattered the puzzle.
‘This is not the place where I belong to. In order to return, I need to find a way out. Right now, I’m just someone’s lover, there’s no mistake about why I am here… I just need to figure out why and how to leave.’ whispered Yu Na to herself as she sat down on the house’s porch, looking into the distance, like a wife, waiting for her husband’s return
‘Did I die? No, if that was the case, why am I trapped inside a grown woman? If I were to be reborn, I should be born as a baby, not like this. Then? Did I somehow travel here? What happened to me that night? It’s too clear to be a lucid dream, so why, why is this happening to me?’
Her thoughts were interrupted by an old lady that was passing by on the road. The old lady looked exhausted and Yu Na quickly noticed her.
‘Are you alright, miss?’ quickly asked Yu Na as she approached the old lady
‘Oh, I’m just tired, I’ve been out, trying to make a living. I just finished selling out the little things that I had left. It’s so hard now, I need to buy food for me and my husband so we can make it another day.’ complained the old lady as she looked at the girl’s expression
‘I’m sorry to hear that, it must be very hard. We don’t really have anything to offer, but would it help you if I’d bring some water? Do you feel thirsty?’ to her question, the old lady nodded her head and Yu Na headed back into the house to bring out some water.
After she returned, the old lady was grateful for her gesture. She took Yu Na’s hand and smiled gently.
‘Oh, you have such a pure soul, I feel sad knowing the fate that you have to experience. I wonder what went wrong.’ to the old kady’s words, Yu Na was caught off guard
‘What do you mean by that?’
‘I may be wrong, but as I see, it looks like you’re trapped in such a darkness that I had never seen. You’ve destined to die such a tragic death, I wonder what decision will cause this tragic ending?’ Her words made Yu Na very uneasy, as her body started to tremble.
Yeong-hwan, who was returning from outside, saw the old lady and recognized her instantly. His face turned red from anger. He took Yu Na by her hand and hid her behind his back.
