The Humanity Club

Yui Komori's level of annoyance was nothing compared to hers

Yui Komori's level of annoyance was nothing compared to hers

Jan 05, 2022

"Huh? We have a guest?" the boy with auburn hair asked, his question aimed towards the blond.

"No! Don't go near her—" Kazuya cried out to them but it was too late because I was already making my way up to them.

"Before asking for someone's name, first state yours!" I said, placing my hands at my hips. Yes! I've always wanted to say this cliché line! I never get to say it to anyone other than my siblings so it feels great!

The redhead flinched at my proximity but nodded his head anyways. With a smile, he said, "I'm Hinata Sotaro. It's nice to meet you."

"Oh, I see." I nodded my head. Redhead's are usually cheerful and energetic, right? Otoya Ittoki is too. Well, compared to the Tamaki Suoh look-alike, he doesn't seem like a bad person.

"And you?" I asked, looking towards the brown haired fellow in the hat. He stood only a few centimetres taller than me.

"I'm Hiro Ikeda," he introduced, looking away from me and appearing to be slightly annoyed. I smiled at his reaction. I could tell he didn't like associating with others much, just like me.

"I'm Miyuki Hoshino. A member of this club starting today," I told them as they made their way inside the room.

"Really? Yay!" the boy with auburn hair cheered, placing his bag down on the table.

"Great. It'll be a pain once Saki gets here..." Hiro said, taking a seat.

"Saki?" I questioned him, blinking at the name. Another girl? That actually calmed me down. There were a bunch of boys in this club so having a female member won't be so bad... I think...

Unless she had the whole shoujo sickeningly sweet 'I-do-nothing-wrong-and-I'm-perfect' character. I don't think I could handle those.

I shook my head. I just joined today but I was already giving myself a headache. I needed to relax... Pulling out my cell phone, I took out a bag of chips that I had kept inside my bag and made my way to a sofa to sit down. I went on Crunchyroll and was about to scroll through the newest anime releases like I did everyday when the door burst open.

"Saki has arrived!" A girl with light brown pigtails stood by the doorway, smiling wide. I stared at her blankly. So this was Saki.

"You're acting suspicious," Hiro called over to her but was too preoccupied with his phone to really spare her a glance.

"Hehe~ Well if you're going to insist, something did happen today! Want to know?" Saki said full of pep, putting her hands to her hips.

"Not really," Hiro murmured absently and Saki pouted. She raced up to him, grabbing his hat and pulling it off his head. Hiro's mop of dark brown hair was patted to his forehead and his turquoise eyes widened at the action.

"Hey!" he shouted angrily and Saki merely spun around the clubroom, smiling in contentment.

"I got a l-o-v-e letter today!" she pronounced cheerily and Hiro stopped to blink, taking this in. He lurched backwards.

"A love letter? People actually like you—"

"Could you keep it down over there?" I called over to the loud two, my gaze never leaving my cellphone screen as I was watching the latest episode of Assassination Classroom, "I can barely hear Kazuya's cries now."

Everyone in the room gaped at me once they realized I was talking about their club leader.

"Hoshino's evil! A demon! The devil!" Kazuya hollered, sobbing even louder.

Yeah, I know. I was a sadist, which I preferred to call yandere.

"Hoshino...?" Saki asked, peering over to discover the person of the unknown name.

"Yeah, yeah. I'm Miyuki Hoshino. Nice to—" I started and was interrupted when I was suddenly choked into a hug from behind.

"No way! A girl! So your name is 'Miyuki!' Mind if I call you, Mi-chan? It's cute and all! Did you join the club? This club's fun and everyone here's interesting! We're going to have so much fun together!" The girl continued babbling on and on as she kept excitedly rubbing her face against my cheek. I twitched angrily, pausing the episode I was watching.

What the heck was this girl's problem?!

"G-get the f*ck off me!" I exclaimed.

Fortunately, Saki obeyed and freed me from her constricting hold.

"You shouldn't swear, Mi-chan," she scolded me.

I clenched my fists and glowered at her. I knew I just met her, and it was bad to rush to conclusions but I didn't like her...

So much.

"I'll swear whenever I want. If you ever touch me again you won't get off easy!"

Despite me being one hundred percent serious, Saki laughed and slapped my shoulder playfully. "Aww! Mi-chan's cute when she's mad!"

"I'm not cute!"

The girl just giggled in response, irking me to no end. Here I was, happy that another girl was here besides me but she was one of those bubbly, clingy girls? They were annoying as heck!

"Told you!" Hiro called over to me. I sent a scowl in his direction and he flinched. If this is what he meant when he said "it'll be a pain when Saki gets here" then I would've kept my distance from this girl.

Forget every reverse harem heroine there is, Yui Komori's level of annoyance was nothing compared to hers.

"Settle down you two," Hinata laughed nervously, trying to break the tension between us.

"Mi-chan! My name is Saki Yamamoto so Sa-chan or Saki-chan is okay!" Saki pointed to herself, grinning, and I avoided eye contact.

"No thanks! Am I allowed to call you 'B*tch-chan' instead?"

Kudos to Laito Sakamaki.

"Huh? So mean! I just want to be friends!" she gasped, distraught by my comment.

I scoffed. "Friends? I've never had friends nor any sort of relationship in my entire life. I'm what you call a 'loner.'" I stood up from the sofa and proudly placed a hand to my chest. "Just having anime and manga is enough for me. I'm never going to have any friends for as long as I live!"

Saki blinked rapidly in surprise. She clapped her hands together, awed. "So you're an 'otaku,' Mi-chan? Amazing! I've never seen one before!"

The more Saki clapped in amazement, the wider my smile became. Sure, I could've taken this into offence, but then again, finding an otaku at this school was just that hard.

"Wow. Another weirdo has joined the club?" I traced the chuckle to the boy that had just entered the room. He had a head of shaggy brown hair that also contained blue streaks; a surprising do considering dull hair was the norm in this school.

"Weirdo?" I scoffed, twisting around to face him. "Now, I find that offensive."

"So what?" he asked, tilting his head to the side and bringing the mischievousness of his smile to light. "Do you want me to call you an 'otaku' instead? Not that it'd make any difference."

I couldn't help but mimic his expression in return. This guy had guts. "Actually, I'd prefer that. So what's your name?"

"Yuji Sato," he said, taking a seat on the sofa across the room. "You?"

"Miyuki Hoshino."

He cracked another grin. "Then, welcome to the club, Miyuki."

"Hold on just a minute! Why does Yuji get to call you by your first name?" Kazuya objected, jerking his head left and right.

I shot him an irritated look. "Because he's the only one here besides Hinata that hasn't pissed me off yet. Now stay in your corner and cry like the little wuss you are."

Kazuya slumped towards his makeshift Tamaki-corner before falling to his knees in defeat. I could guess the mushroom growing was soon to begin.

"You're pretty good," Hiro commented, eyes not leaving the baseball magazine he was glued to. "Sure Kazuya is easy to tease but he usually bounces back right with that big ego of his."

"You're pretty easy to tease too, Hi-chan," Yuji countered. "I mean, you're short, bad-tempered, unappealing, oh and short—"

"Yuji!" Hiro growled. "Why the hell did you say short twice?"

"Whoops, did I?" he chuckled. "I just thought it'd be good to point out the obvious every now and again."

As my attention left their conversation, I found my gaze fixed onto someone else who was staring at me. Hinata, was it? His lips were extended in a slight pout, eyes reflecting unexpected relief. "So you don't find me irritating?"

"Why would I?" I answered him with a raised brow. "You didn't do anything, right?" Still, this guy really did have a baby face. And he even cared about something like that...

If he was an anime character, I'd totally love him.

Hinata cracked a tiny smile. "That's a relief. I hope we can get along from now on!"

I bobbed my head. "Yeah, sure."

"How about me?" Saki wailed, tears welling up at the corners of her eyes. "We can get along too, right?"

I clicked my tongue. "Heh, yeah right. Never gonna happen."

"Wah! Mi-chan is so mean!" Saki cried, falling face-first onto the sofa like the idiot had minutes ago.

As they all continued with their raucous conversations and bickering, I carefully studied everyone and everything in the room. It wasn't long until realization dawned upon me. My eyelids shot up in surprise. "Oh yeah. I forgot to ask but what exactly is this club?"

All eyes swivelled to me, each coated in astonishment.

Saki spoke out first, "You joined and you don't even know what it is?"

"It was more like I was threatened," I mumbled under my breath. An image of that old hag came to mind, causing me to gag. I nudged it all aside and plopped a hand to my hip. "So?" I said. "What's this club all about?"

"We are Seisein Academy's Humanity Club!" declared Kazuya to answer my question. I don't know when he had gotten up to his feet, but he did, and he held out his hand for emphasis. "We help those in need and make sure to fulfil their requests to the best of our abilities!"

My mouth fell open. Wait, then wasn't this like a volunteer club? Suzuki-sensei made me join this?

"Me, Kazuya Hayashi, the club's leader or president; Hiro Ikeda, the expert of all things academics; Hinata Sotaro, the compassionate student with a heart of gold; Yuji Sato, the trickster who's a master of deception; Saki Yamamoto, our very own jack-of-all-trades." As he announced all their skills, he pointed to each and every one of them. "Every applicant's problems are solved by whichever person it categorizes under. And since you joined the Humanity Club, Miyuki Hoshino, you will become this club's strength!"

"Yeah right," Hiro commented under his breath but I wasn't paying him any attention.

With Kazuya's index finger pointed directly at me, whilst wearing such a broad, happy-go-lucky smile, I was stuck gaping at him like a fish out of water.

"I'm becoming what?"

Miyuki Hoshino has loved anime and manga for as long as she can remember. Deeply burrowed in 2D fantasies like any fangirl, she's a firm believer that it's all she needs to lead a happy life. Though, when she's threatened by her homeroom teacher to join a volunteer club as punishment for failing her classes, she is left with no choice but to interact with the existing members. There, Miyuki is introduced to the volatile president Kazuya, the hot-tempered Hiro, the lazy to the bone Yuji, the easy-breezy Hinata, and the bubbly, I-want-to-be-friends-with-everyone Saki.

All Miyuki wants is to return to her peaceful hermit life, which isn't easy when the universe keeps forcing her to socialize with these eccentric club members who continuously drag her into their shenanigans.

To make matters worse, multiple of these 3D boys take a liking to her. Is it possible for Miyuki to get through high school in one piece after all?
